I could practically hear Derek thinking move away, male‑that‑is‑not‑me in Morse code. The tests were quick — only vitals and a brief exam — and Dr Hale narrated everything in that steady, reassuring tone doctors use when they’re trying to keep you from spiralling. Or whoever accompanies you. Meanwhile, Derek watched every second like he was evaluating a threat. To what, I had no idea. To whom… I was starting to suspect, though Dr Hale’s job was literally to get Derek what he wanted. A baby. An heir. When we were done, Dr Hale handed me a small packet of tablets and little strips and devices I’d need to use at home.

Derek Hale lounged in the leather armchair beside the window, his dark hair falling carelessly across his forehead as he scrolled through his phone with indifference. He looked exactly as he had three years ago—young, cocky, with that trademark smirk that had once driven Damien to distraction.

"Which is why they want it stopped." He looked at the notepad. "My father has a business associate. Derek Hale. His father runs a hedge fund that would benefit significantly from a prolonged depression in both our stock prices." He paused. "Derek is on the soccer team. We are not close." I looked at him. "How not close." "He does not like me," Liam said simply. "It has never been a problem on the field but it has always been present." "Could he have access to both companies' internal communications."

She was so sure she knew the man. “You look familiar,” she said. “Do I know you?” He kept on smiling. “Hi Jenny,” he said. “I’m Derek Hale, the father of the man you are fucking.” She frowned. “You are Jayden’s father? Wow. Are you really ….the…… Veck sent me here. You know him right?”
