a nurse asked, already rolling her inside.
“Anna,” I said. “Anna—” I swallowed. “Anna—”
“Last name?” another voice pressed.
I froze.
I realized, with a sharp, humiliating jolt, that I didn’t know it.
“Anna,” I repeated, uselessly.
The nurse shot me a look. “Sir.”
“Anna,” I said again, then dragged a hand down my face. “She works for me. Accounting. I—I don’t know her last name.”
There was no judgment in the nurse’s expression, only urgency. “We’ll figure it out. Stay here.”
