At the time Lani's mother died, Zane's family treated her as their own daughter. Among her three friends, Zane was the closest to Raine. It is because he's the first one he met and they made more happy memories than the others. Among all of them, Zane's the most talented and most shy. He wants to write mystery novels and Raine's the first one reading his works. "You're right!" Lani beamed. "Indeed!" Raine replied, "So meet you at our house later?" "At your house? I don’t think I will remember them all on the first go, but luckily you have two hands,” he sai

But instead, I stood rooted to the spot, my breath uneven, as his hand brushed deliberately close to mine—not touching, just hovering, daring me to close the gap. “I’m not like the men you’ve known,” Zane said quietly, his gaze locked on mine as though he could see straight through me. “And you’re not as uninterested as you pretend.” Anger and desire warred inside me. “You’re arrogant.” “Confident,” he corrected smoothly. “And right.” I wanted to argue. I wanted to tell him he wasn’t right, that I had no interest in a man who could make a woman scream behind closed doors and then pin me against a wall like I was his next indulgence.

,said Daisy. "Yeah, I read about it",said Zane "Where?" Zane hesitated before answering,"One of Derek's old books" "Oh",said Daisy. "You've been doing a lot of reading lately, I see" "Yeah...at night, I can't seem to sleep",said Zane, so I utilise my time" "Nice" "I read about the sword of Bane",said Zane "What about it?",asked Daisy "I read about how powerful it is. It's the most powerful artefact in existence",said Zane, looking interested in it."Is Alfred still looking for it?"

She kissed him like the world was ending. Zane’s expression was complicated, coldness in his eyes but a smirk tugging his mouth. I could almost read his thoughts. He liked that Vivian finally felt the sting of desperation. But it also dragged up his own memories—me with Ronan at the lake, with the soccer team, even that night at Shifters. I knew those moments had gutted him. I tore my eyes away from Vivian and Tyler’s public display. “What’s next?” Zane’s gaze flicked to me. He knew I meant work. “I’ll start going through emails you sorted. You can use the time to read the book Trav gave you. Once I need you, I’ll call.”

Pretended that we both found our books more interesting than our faces. At some point, Zane disappeared into the kitchen and returned with snacks. He handed me the bag of chips. Our fingers brushed, and my heart jumped so hard it hurt. Zane’s body tensed, his eyes meeting mine and instantly fleeing away. He cleared his throat and sank back into his spot. I stared down at my book. At least I tried too. At least tried to make sense of the difference between Open-ended and Close-ended phases in the marketing funnel. But I kept staring at Zane from under my lashes. At the way his lips moved as he munched on the stacks. At the way his fingers fiddle with the pen.

Gravel crunched under my boots. Zane was already waiting, leaning against a rented car, holding a coffee cup. And looking very smug. “The cavalry,” he drawled as we got out of the cars. Anthony stepped forward first, his guards fanning out behind him. I walked a fraction behind his shoulder. Zane snorted. “Let me guess,” he said. “This is the part where you try to scare me into talking? There is nothing to say. A handful of nurses told fairy tales without a shred of proof.”

He hit the ground hard and didn't get up. "You couldn't have done that five minutes ago?" Alerion snapped at Caius while dodging a knife. "I had to find the right book! Do you know how many books are in a library?" "You're supposed to know these things!" "I'm not psychic or flash!" Zane was fighting off two guys at once, his shoulder still bleeding badly, and he kept looking back at me every two seconds like he was making sure I was still there. "Zane, watch out!" I screamed as another guy came at him from behind.
