It would have made everything so much easier, but since I wasn’t even supposed to be privy to that information, I couldn’t very well share it with him. Angela was the first to ease his fears by explaining that she was actually a member of a worldwide secret group that was dedicated to ridding the world of zombies. She was one of their trained soldiers and had battled many a zombie in her day; as had Evan. She looked at me apologetically as she explained the necessity to hide behind the façade of being a traveling social worker and an author to allow them the freedom they needed to move around and disappear for days at a time while they hunted and took down the zombies.

Death lurking just around me. Suddenly, the door creaked open, expecting another blow. Instead, Zane sauntered in. His hair was slicked back, and his eyes looked cold, as it locked onto mine. He dragged a rickety wooden chair across the room, its legs scraping against the concrete ground, and sat down in front of me, elbows resting on his knees, hands clasped loosely. And then a faint smirk played on his lips, as if he were savoring the sight of me broken and bleeding.

“I asked if you talked to him.” My chest tightens again. My fingers dig into the fabric of my dress. I feel my pulse hammering against my skin. Zane studies my face carefully, watching every twitch, every blink. “You’re nervous,” he says quietly. “I just want to go home.” “Not yet.” My breath stutters. Zane pulls open his drawer and places a small black notebook on the table. He flips it open to a page. “Ray’s handwriting,” he says. “Recognise it?”

Even the human Gunner looked smaller than the one I know. As Gunner fawned over Zee, checking her wounds and covering her exposed body, that warm feeling from before returned, along with the same sweet scent. I looked around but I still couldn’t see the source of it. The room seemed to grow brighter, but either they didn’t notice or couldn’t see it. Gunner and the two other wolves paid no mind to the additional light, or the odd scent.

He made to close it back, but something caught his eye. Zane frowned and reached into it, picking the photographs up. They were pictures of him at the arcade....the ones Asher had taken that day when Zane wasn't looking. His chest tightened, remembering he'd kept them there himself. "Stupid," he muttered, flipped through the stack. "Stupid pictures. Stupid fucking Asher." He reached into the space to take out whatever was left, but stopped when his fingers brushed something deep inside. Zane's brows furrowed, and he dropped the pictures on the passenger seat, taking out what felt like a book.

And when the lights went dark, Zane was gone. --- Aurora fell to her knees in the rain, the city roaring around her. Somewhere in the chaos, a new truth had been born — one she wasn’t ready to face. Zane hadn’t just been lost to his secrets. He’d been taken by them. ---

“I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.” Without another word, Zane completely dismissed Andrew’s existence. He turned on his heel and began to slowly walk around our ruined living room, his sharp, golden eyes scrutinizing every single surface. He dragged a gloved finger over a charred bookshelf, picked up a broken piece of pottery, and overturned a burnt cushion, searching for clues with an irritatingly calm demeanor.

Zane voiced and I felt hollowed out. “Don't patronise me, Zane!” But Zane headed straight for the shelves, arranging some old ledgers with meticulous fingers. Then he took one from the shelf, turned a page and put it back. I clenched my fists by my sides. "Pay attention to me," I ordered, taking a step closer. Zane ignored me completely. He took another book and inspected its cover before bringing it over to the large drawer in the desk. He put the books into the drawer and closed it with a push of his hip.
