He was already getting out of bed, reaching for his clothes with sharp, efficient movements. “What happened?” I asked, my voice quieter now. He didn’t look at me immediately. “One of my men,” he said finally. “He’s dead.” The words landed hard. Heavy. Real. “How?” I asked. Zane pulled on his shirt, his movements precise. “Murdered.” A chill ran down my spine. The room felt colder. Smaller. “Was it… expected?” I asked carefully. That made him pause. Just for a fraction of a second.

My body feels weak, but I manage to hold on to Rufus as I keep tapping on him. Zane tosses Mindy’s heart away, and he walks up to us, then he takes off his shirt completely.

What had been so damning for him that he resorted to becoming a complete monster all for this? For a long moment, I simply stood there, the world tilting around me, grief and exhaustion threatening to swallow me whole. My eyes darted to where Zane lay still, his form untouched by the chaos around him, and a sob built in my chest. I didn't release it though, because I couldn't mourn the reason for Zane's death. Zane… I rushed to where he still lay on the ground. His lips had turned blue, and his skin a sickly pale shade. He looked more like a corpse now, especially with that ugly wound on his chest.

“Tessa, calm down—” “Answer me, Zane!” I snapped, my voice breaking. He looked away, then said it quietly, almost too softly. “She’s dead.” The words hit me like something sharp and heavy. “She’s… dead?” My mind went blank for a second. I blinked at him, waiting for him to take it back, to tell me I heard wrong. “What does that mean?” I asked, my voice shaking. “What do you mean she’s dead?” Zane moved closer, his hand finding mine again. I didn’t pull away this time. I couldn’t even move.

Zane frowned at me and after thinking about it for a minute, he said; “As long as you don’t expect me to accompany you.” I cringed inwardly; I’d forgotten about the bad blood between them. “I understand. Of course not.” He grunted and looked back out of the window. “Is Mariana Nico’s mother?” Mama asked, and before I could say anything Zane looked at her coldly. “His mother’s dead,” he said, and I saw a flicker of grief in his eyes, or it could have been my imagination, because it was gone as suddenly as it appeared. “Oh, I’m sorry.” Mama said, snapping her lips shut. She stayed silent after that for which I was grateful.

Then he leaned forward, his elbows resting on the table, his voice dropping low. “The man is dead.” The words hit like a punch to the gut. My breath caught, and for a moment, I couldn’t speak. “Dead?” I managed finally. What the hell does that mean? Zane didn’t blink. “Exactly what I said. He’s gone.” He added. I stared at him, my mind reeling. Dead? How? When? My hands clenched into fists under the table, my nails digging into my palms. “You’re sure?”

I said quickly, “you can still patch things up. You can—” A dry laugh left him. “He’s dead.” A chill shot down my spine, my breath hitching. Zane’s gaze flicked to me. “On the 16th like this, I walked into his apartment to wish him a happy birthday.” His chin quivered. “I saw his body hanging from the ceiling.” I blinked, and then again, as if that might help me understand. “He killed himself?” My throat tightened, voice airy. “Why?” Zane shut his eyes and inhaled. His body tightened like the air stung his nostrils.
