His hand fell back down, and he took one last gasp, then he went still. Sorry? “Sorry for what?” My voice was barely above a whisper as I stared at his calm, emotionless face. He was dead. I wouldn't be receiving any answer. Zane was my only hope out of the life I was in. Now, what was I supposed to do?

"Okay." Another silence engulfed the room, and Zane continued his restless pace, glancing at Emma, who sat on the couch silently, her expression concerned about him as always. After ten minutes of silent pacing, Zane finally came to a stop, crossing his arms over his chest and huffed, turning to face everyone. Just then his phone rang, and the entire room held their breath as he answered, "Officer Smith. What's the status." "Officer Dan is dead, so is Frank, and... Um, Leon is also dead. Deborah is missing." Officer Smith's voice echoed in his ear, making Zane's eyes tear up in frustration.

Zomb reached out a hand to her, and when Nova gave it, she gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "Zomb...I'm sorry for dragging you into this. I didn't mean for you...I didn't..." none of the words I'm saying are what I want to say, and Zomb gives out a small laugh. "Jonathan, I died the minute I escaped from Sunville. Now I'm just doing it physically." she replied, her movements slowing. I could feel my stomach tighten with dread, and I held her a little closer. She was starting to feel cold, and I panicked a bit.

I couldn't move. I looked up at him, my vision blurring. He was standing over me, breathing hard, his hair disheveled. He looked down at his hands as if he didn't recognize them. "Is he... is he dead?" Sibil whispered from the doorway. Zane knelt down, pressing two fingers to my neck. He stayed there for a long time, his face a mask of cold calculation. Finally, he looked up at her, a slow, terrifying smile spreading across his face.

I guess that meant that Zane was staying for dinner. I sat back at the table and I was watching Zane. I didn’t really know what the hell to say to him. Dad never mentioned having kids before me. But then again, dad hated me and why would he want to tell me that? Especially if he thought that I might go looking for Zane when things got really bad at home. “So, where is dad now?” Zane finally asked. “Dead.” I said. “Oh. How?” He asked. “I killed him.” I said. And Zane’s eyes went wide.

Zane's POV “Eden has….Eden has passed away.” The doctor’s words hit me like a punch to the stomach. She was…she was dead? My Eden. My love. My life. No. It wasn’t possible I couldn’t breathe. I felt like something was squeezing my heart, suffocating me. “I’m so sorry, Zane,” Beta Brighton said, resting his hand on my shoulder. Was this my fate? I’d found my mate, my one true love. But was it my fate to love and then lose her? To die alone?

The voice started, making her sit well and she wiped away the tears that fell from my eyes. “Zane made Alpha Lance murder his parents, putting him in the eyes of the world, and not only that, he tried to wipe out the entire pack but was stopped by Alpha Lance, who executed him and his family. But, sadly, Zane isn’t dead yet. He is back and bound in making everyone suffer.” She ended.

I blink, my eyes adjusting, and then I freeze. "Zane?" I whisper in disbelief. "How? You’re... you're dead." He died years ago in a car accident. Am I dreaming? Is my mind breaking? For a split second, I wonder if it’s Zane’s son, seeking revenge for a death I didn't cause—but no. This man isn't a teenager. He is in his fourtys. It is him. Zane is alive. He stands in the doorway, his lips curved in a slight, chilling smile.

He didn't seem to be all too eager to be back—or at the very least, he didn't seem eager to see either his own brother or his wife. And here I thought maybe that his reappearance would settle things within the Langston empire... Maybe I was wrong. "Well, before you ask anything, I have a few things I want to say myself," Zane said as he stepped out of Adrian's embrace which he hardly returned. Then Zane turned to face the crowd as he spoke. "Yes, I was supposed to be dead. As many of you know, the plane I was on coming back from my business trip crashed. No one survived..."

The word looped through my head over and over, echoing like a broken record. Dead? How could I be dead? I could feel my heartbeat. I could breathe, my chest rising and falling, air filling my lungs. My palms were sweaty, my muscles ached from being thrown — dead people didn’t feel all that, right?
