The Mate Agreement
“That’s when it feels like I’ve failed at being a mother.”
“It’s not real.” I blurt out.
Her patient, questioning gaze stays on me.
“My relationship with William, it’s…” I bite my lower lip, my gaze dropping to my fingers. She’ll hate that I lied to her, but it’s time to come clean. Things are already messy and complicated, there’s not much damage left to do. “It’s not real. We’re mates, yes, but we had an agreement to fake date until graduation.”
Mom nods slowly, but she doesn’t seem surprised. If anything, it’s as if she’d known, or suspected it somehow.
