~~VINCENZO~~

The morning sun caught my vision. I squinted into the ray of sunlight, warmth surging through me. For a moment, I forgot where I was. Then I turned over, and when I saw her, I remembered everything. I remembered the night before.

Jessica. My Jessica. Mi Cara. My baby girl.

She lay on her side, her beautiful freckled face to me. Her silk robe accentuated the curve of her hip, her milky flesh exposed beneath the white sheets. Her hair spilled across the pillow like brown silk, catching the sunlight in its strands. Her breathing was steady, slow. Peaceful. Just how I wanted.

She was angelic in the morning light—too delicate. Like something you could look at but never touch. But I had touched her. Tasted her too many times. Held onto her as if she was the only thing tethering me to this world.

And maybe she was.

I leaned in to brush a kiss against her temple, careful not to wake her up. She needed more hours of sleep. I pulled myself from the bed and went into the bathr

I left Seattle before the sun came up. I didn't tell anyone, just Vince, so he wouldn't bring down the gates of hell in search of me. The shock on Joyce's face when she saw me standing on her porch was priceless. She was frozen for a moment, probably wondering if I was real or not. We hugged for what felt like hours, I couldn't help the tears that followed. I had thought I'd never see her again. "Jessica! Oh my God! This is a surprise!" Noah came out of the kitchen, covered in flour and wearing a checkered apron. "Aunty Jessie!" Lily ran out behind him. "Baby Lils!" I tossed my bag aside and picked her up. She giggled as I kissed her plump chin. "Someone's getting big!" I teased. "Daddy makes me pancakes allllll the time." She rolled her cute eyes. We all laughed. Her words were clearer now; she was becoming a big girl. I was so happy to see them. After lunch, Joyce and I sat by the swimming pool as we watched Noah teach Lily how to swim with her rubber duck. He loved

~~LUCA~~There was an after-party in The Cross Manion. It was nothing short of a feast. Half of the la familia were present. Selene sat next to me as I ate with Vince and my grandmother. Marco was running around with two other kids. It was like the night Vince was crowned Re; the memory was still fresh. Almost everyone's attention was on me, but my attention was someone else.Jessica.She stood across the room, her eyes on me with a glass of wine in her hand. She raised it in a silent toast, her eyes were unreadable. She turned and walked away without a word.A hollow ache settled in my chest. Why did I get the feeling I’d lost her? Did I ever even have her?"It's been a long day," Mother Cross said, rising from the table. "I'll be retiring to my room. Age is telling in my bones," she joked. A round of chuckles filled the room.Vince got up too. "We should all go to bed too. It’s been an eventful night." He gave me a curt nod and walked away with our grandmother.A mental image of him

~~LUCA~~ I was kept in a dark room. The air was thick with dust and there was strange silence. I couldn’t see clearly, my vision were still blurry after the blindfold had been removed. I went to the door, banging on it heavily with a pounding heart. This wasn’t the plan. Something wasn't right. As I kept on banging on the door, it pushed open and Rocco entered. He was one of Vince's loyal soldiers. "Rocco!" I called, watching him closely in case he was armed to kill me. His demeanor was calm, nothing alarming. "What the fuck is going on? Where is Vince?" I asked. "Vince is probably at the church by now," he said casually as he tucked his hand into the pockets of his trousers. "The church?" I narrowed my eyes, trying to understand the situation. "Then why was I brought here? What is this? This wasn't the goddamn plan! Did you fucking betray us?!" I clenched my fists, ready to throw punches. Rocco sighed and stepped closer, placing a hand on my shoulder. "Look, Luca... I'd rather

My heart boomed in my chest with every step I took with Mother Cross, down the narrow hallway. It was dark, the stony structures cast shadows around. We stopped before a tall wooden door, and she turned to me with a small smile. “He's been waiting for you." She said. I couldn't smile back; my face felt frozen from the cold. Then, without another word, she opened the door and stepped aside, letting me pass through. The room was dimly lit, almost completely dark. I took a hesitant step in, the heavy door closing behind me with a soft thud. I looked back, and she had gone. I began to get scared. "Vince?" I called out softly, my voice trembling. "Vince?" I looked around. A shadow fell out of the corner, and then I saw him. My Vince. He stood at the far end of the room, his tall frame leaning slightly against the wall. I stood like a statue, breathless, speechless. He looked thinner than I remembered, but he was still strong, still broad-shouldered and powerful. He

I left the library with shaky legs, a skittering heart, and a clouded mind. There was a way out of this. I could get out of this cage... I could see Vince again. I just needed to be smart and quick. I could do this. I just needed a little help getting out. I made my way through the servants’ hallway, past the kitchen, until I found a narrow staircase that led to the lower wing—the maid’s quarters. I walked past rows of small wooden doors until I found one that was slightly ajar. I peeped in and found an elderly woman with silver hair tied into a neat bun; she was folding freshly laundered linens. Her face was worn but kind, she looked welcoming and I was immediately drawn to her. She straightened up as soon as she spotted me by the door. She didn't appear surprised; she just smiled instead. "My lady. What brings you to the maid quarters?" she asked. I entered slowly, looking around her room. It was neat and smelled of herbs. "I'm in need of help," I told her. She p
