My feet dragged across the sand as my abductor led me into a bushy area, the gun pressed firmly against my lower back. The sound of the waves at the beach had faded. I had questions to ask, but I didn’t dare speak. I could feel sweat gathering at the nape of my neck and between my shoulder blades.

A hut came into view—old, wooden, and half-covered by branches and vines. It looked abandoned. A hideout spot.

“Inside,” the lady ordered with a rough voice, like she didn't want to use her real one.

My legs trembled as I stepped in. The floors were wet and muddy. It was hot and dark inside. The air was thick and smelled like wet, dirty clothes.

She shut the door behind us with a loud creak.

“On your knees,” she said coldly as she pushed me forward. I fell, my hip and elbow hit the wet, sticky ground.

I felt the coolness of the ground ripple through me.

“I said on your knees!” she screamed. I struggled to go on my knees, my mind was spinning with roaming thoughts. Why did she feel st

I was quiet, not knowing what to say for endless minutes. Caesar was gone, and I thought the darkness had gone with him. Now, strangely, there's a vindictive brother.I wasn't safe, neither was Vince nor Luca. If Toby could find us, that means Jericho Augusto had too. “Do you think he knows that we’re here?” I finally ask what I held myself from asking.I didn't want the dreadful truth. Vince nodded slowly. “I think he does. Like I said, Tobi being here wasn't a coincidence. He works for the Augustos." I looked around like Jericho Augusto was already upon us. Vince turned me to face him. “I won’t let anything happen to you,” he said solemnly. I looked at him. I wanted to believe. I did believe him but... “You can’t promise that,” I shook my head. “I can,” he declared. I sighed and rubbed my cheek against his palm. “What about Luca?” Vince’s lips twitched. “Luca’s leaving. Tonight.” Of course. Luca Cross never stays. “He’s taking Marco and flying out. Somewhere safe. Far aw

“Toby?” I whispered again, beyond stunned. I couldn't believe he had just saved me. He was the last person I would have thought of. He was still the same as the last I saw him... or maybe I was too distorted to notice any changes. As Toby opened his mouth to reply, the door flew open with a loud bang. “Get away from her!” a growl tore through the room. I turned sharply and almost broke down in tears. Vince. And right behind him was Luca. They were late, but at least I was still alive. They stood in the doorway, guns raised, both at alert. Their eyes locked onto Toby like he was the enemy. He wasn't. He was quite the opposite. Toby’s hands shot up in the air instantly when he realized he was about to be attacked by two Mafia men. “I didn't take her. I swear,” he said, quickly, panting heavily. “I saved her—ask her! I saved her!” “Don't move!” Vince shouted, stepping forward with his gun still pointed at Tobi’s head. “Jessica, move away!” “No!” I scrambled forward. “He saved

I grabbed Vince's arm, my knees buckling as I kept eye contact with the boy behind Luca. It was him. It was really him. He was alive. Luca's entire body shook as his little boy clung behind him, wide-eyed and trembling.“Luca!” Vince barked again, "Put the gun down. Now! And take Marco out of here!”Luca shut his eyes, tears rolling down his cheek. God, it was so painful to watch. His hand tightened around the pistol. For a moment, I was afraid he wouldn’t listen—that all the rage and heartbreak would drive him to do something reckless, like pulling the trigger and ending Selene's life right in front of her son. She certainly looked ready to die, like there was nothing else to live for.But then his eyes flew open, as if seeing clearly for the first time. His arm slowly dropped to his side. The gun hung limply in his grip.Without a word, Luca turned, reached for his boy, and scooped him into his arms. Marco clutched him tightly—he felt safe in his father's arms."Take her,” Vince ord

Vince dropped Luca off at a hotel. Surprisingly, he didn’t come with Vince to the house. I didn’t want to go either—for one, Bianca was still there, although Vince assured me she would be leaving by sunrise. Two, I needed to pack up some stuff and lie to Joyce that I was going on a solo vacation. I had to lie, or I’d be setting myself up for a week of silent treatment. After making out for what felt like hours, Vince and I remained in his car, parked somewhere around Joyce’s home.“I can’t believe you’re taking me to Cali with you. For a mission.” I couldn’t help but smile. I didn’t know why it meant something to me, but it did.Vince leaned closer, brushing a strand of hair behind my ear. “I want you with me. And I trust you. I can protect you…” his voice dipped, eyes softening, “We’ve been through so much together. I know how resilient and strong you are. You’re exactly what I need by my side every goddamn time."My heart was full—so full, like there was a bubble threatening to burs

Vince and I sat in a dimly lit pub. It was my first time in a pub, and unlike what I'd expected, it wasn’t crowded, just a few people nursing their drinks in the far corners, the soft hum of a radio blending with low murmurs of conversation. Vince had an arm around me—must be trying to ward off lustful eyes of the men around. It made me feel so tiny and secured.Soon, Luca walked into the pub. His hair was messy, his button-up dark shirt wrinkled like he’d slept in it. There was a faint stubble lining his jaw, and the moment his eyes landed on us, his dead look was replaced with a bright one.“You still remember this old pub,” Luca smirked at his brother as he slid into the booth, settling opposite Vince and me. His eyes flicked to me and softened just a little. “Jessica,” he nodded.“Hey,” I said quietly, offering him a small smile. He looked… so out of touch, like a different person. The silence fell in for a moment. Then Luca let out a breath and leaned forward, gripping the edge o
