Chapter 1

1

It was eleven o’clock at night at Tinson Garden.

A dark shadow cut through the peaceful landscape, splashing into a puddle.

"Mr. Yale!" Leigh Lambert, the assistant, exclaimed as he pushed open the door in a panic. "Mrs. Yale is—"

Before finishing his sentence, Leigh realized he had misspoken and immediately corrected himself: "Ms. Renshaw is having another tantrum!"

Chester clenched his fists and stormed up the building.

Inside the room, Elizabeth Renshaw leaned against the windowpane, her face pale. She gripped the edge of the glass with one hand. Due to her low blood sugar, she felt weak and was trembling.

Three days ago, Chester had taken her from the airport.

Since then, she had been locked in this room like a prisoner, completely isolated from the world with no internet or mobile phone.

"I want to see Chester!" she screamed toward the door. "Otherwise, I’ll jump right now!"

Chester stopped in his tracks. He had never hated that woman’s voice more than he did at that moment.

"Mr. Yale." Upon seeing Chester, the servants cowered and greeted him, stepping aside to make way.

"Get out!" Chester’s voice was deep and furious.

Elizabeth gripped the window frame tightly, her eyes darting around. She had been fasting for three days; even breathing felt like an immense effort now. She only looked over when she heard the sound of footsteps beside her.

It was Chester!

"You're finally willing to—"

Before she could finish, a heavy grip tightened around her neck. The force was so strong it felt as though she were being strangled to death.

"Fasting? Jumping?" Chester growled, his expression unusually terrifying. "You want death? It’s not that easy!"

His hand shook slightly as he choked her, then he suddenly shoved her away. Elizabeth’s weak body couldn't withstand the force, and she collapsed to the floor.

"Do you think I’m afraid of death?" Elizabeth pushed herself up from the ground. "It’s been three years! I’ve had enough!" she said in a gritty tone.

Those three years of marriage had exhausted all her hope and passion.

"You’ve had enough?" Chester’s dark gaze shot icy daggers. "Is that why 'Mrs. Yale' wants a divorce?"

He continued to approach her with a threatening aura.

His hatred was so palpable it seemed as if he wanted to skin her alive. Elizabeth gasped for air, staring at the man before her with hateful eyes. He was as cold as a statue.

"After we divorce, we will have nothing to do with each other!" Elizabeth gritted her teeth and said furiously.

Suddenly, Chester loomed over her. With a swift movement, he grabbed her by the collar and lifted her with ease.

"Ms. Yale, do you think you can escape punishment so easily after committing murder?" Chester’s eyes were filled with rage.

Elizabeth couldn’t escape his grip; she could only endure his violence.

A month ago, she had finally met the woman he had been seeing. That woman was an addict. Unfortunately, she had suddenly fallen ill and could not be resuscitated.

"I didn’t kill Rachel Mellow!" Elizabeth wanted to argue, but as she looked into his enraged, bloodshot eyes, she could only laugh to herself and say, "Fine, I had her killed! What are you going to do? Kill me?"

"Kill you? Your life isn't as valuable as hers!" The man’s contorted features looked more terrifying than usual.

"You want a divorce? In your dreams!"

Elizabeth’s heart spasmed. This was the man she had tried to please for the last three years. Since the day they married, she knew he didn't love her. In all that time, she had never seen him smile until she saw him with that woman. Only then did she realize that this man was capable of laughter

"If we don't divorce, I will remain Mrs. Yale even if I die!" she stared at the violent man with a stubborn gaze. "The woman you love will never become Mrs. Yale!"

Mrs. Yale? She was unworthy.

Chester clenched his fists and threw Elizabeth violently to the floor. "You want a divorce? I’ll grant your wish!" he said in a spiteful voice.

Lying on the floor, Elizabeth felt as if every bone in her body was about to break. She lifted her head slightly; Chester had already left the room without her noticing. She was in pain all over.

After a while, Leigh arrived with the divorce papers.

"Ms. Renshaw, Mr. Yale has asked you to sign this," Leigh said, handing her the documents.

Sitting on the floor, Elizabeth leaned her full weight against the wall. Her low blood sugar had begun to cloud her thoughts and consciousness.

When she heard the word "divorce," her empty eyes suddenly showed a glimmer of hope. She quickly glanced at the papers and saw Chester’s signature. With a slight lift of the corner of her mouth, she thought that this marriage had finally come to an end.

She grabbed the pen with trembling hands, only to find she had no strength left at all.

Outside the room, a man stood with his back toward her. His brow was furrowed, and his eyes were bloodshot. He regretted not strangling the woman to death with his own hands earlier.

"Mr. Yale." Leigh had stepped out of the room.

"Has she signed it yet?"

Leigh hesitated for a moment.

"Ms. Renshaw has fainted!"

Fainted? She must be faking it again.

"Have her sign it when she wakes up!" Chester said, his eyes cold. He headed down the stairs with brisk steps.

"Mr. Yale, Ms. Renshaw hasn't eaten for three days. If this continues, she might..." Leigh said worriedly.

"Then make sure she signs the papers before she dies!" Chester stopped in his tracks and said with pure hatred.

One month later, in Sire City.

It was nine o'clock at night in the VIP restroom on the third floor of Sunshine Town.

Elizabeth gripped the edge of the sink and vomited repeatedly. She had had a few extra glasses of wine at dinner, and her stomach felt like a stormy ocean at that moment.

"Elizabeth, are you okay?" asked Lenny Sands, her company director.

Elizabeth wiped the corners of her mouth. She felt disgusted just thinking about that fat man at the Union Technology banquet.

"I’m fine!" Elizabeth shook her head. If she wanted to survive in Sire City, she had to keep this job.

"Mr. Lenzo is still waiting for us!" Lenny said as she headed out of the restroom.

Elizabeth followed quickly. Today was a very rare opportunity for her, and she wanted to perform well.

"Ms. Sands, has Mr. Lenzo agreed to work with us?"

Lenny stopped walking and gave Elizabeth a condescending look. If Mr. Lenzo hadn't specifically asked for her, Lenny would never have brought a rookie to a high-level banquet like this.

"Lizzie, this is a project worth millions of dollars. Do you think we have it in the bag after just a couple of drinks?" Lenny said, scanning Elizabeth from head to toe.

Elizabeth was wearing a white dress that made her skin look even fairer. After a few glasses of alcohol, her cheeks had taken on a scarlet tint.

Lenny’s gaze was both sarcastic and mysterious. Elizabeth felt a twinge of fear.

"Never mind!" Lenny said, continuing forward. "Anyway, Mr. Lenzo has had too much to drink, so he’s already in the guest room on the fourth floor. He asked me to go there. Come with me!"

A guest room? Elizabeth hesitated.
