Chapter 4

Author: Moore
Callum's Point-of-View

Callum stared blankly after the call ended.

Natalie suddenly approached him and asked with an air of thoughtfulness, "Did Selene get upset, Cal? I wouldn't have brought forward my coming-of-age ceremony if it didn't coincide with the major pack gathering. If Selene's so opposed to it, we should just drop the whole thing, Cal."

She then lowered her head, dramatically wiping away tears in a display of distress as she continued, "I mean, Selene's birthday celebration holds greater significance. It's fine if I skip my coming-of-age ceremony, Cal."

Callum snapped out of his daze and calmly assured Natalie, saying, "You don't have to be so distressed, since Selene's already agreed to it, Natalie."

Natalie stopped wiping her tears, a look of utter disbelief crossing her face. "Did Selene actually agree to it?"

She was utterly astonished. She fully expected Selene—given her usual temperament—to throw a fit with Callum, thus creating the perfect opportunity for her to showcase her sympathetic side. She never expected Selene to concede so easily.

She asked tentatively, "What if she only pretended to agree, planning to show up at my ceremony tomorrow just to cause trouble, Cal? I don't mean to doubt her, but considering all her previous actions, I just—"

Callum interrupted Natalie with a furrowed brow, saying, "That's enough, Natalie. I'm certain that Selene wouldn't do such a thing. You should just head back now and make sure everything's prepared for the coming-of-age ceremony tomorrow."

Natalie was momentarily stunned. She quickly masked her shock and said softly, "Got it. I'm so sorry—I shouldn't have doubted Selene. I'll take my leave now, Cal."

Having said that, she turned and muttered under her breath, "That goddamn bitch! Why didn't she just drop dead with that pathetic grandfather of hers? I swear I'll dunk her head in a cesspit one day!"

She grew more incensed and couldn't help but send Selene a series of deliberate messages. "Are you upset since Callum handed me your venue, Selene? It makes no difference, though. Your rage is as meaningless as your late grandfather's life was—it garners zero attention!

"Why are you ignoring my message, Selene? Could it be that you're terrified, or perhaps you're hoping to tattle to Callum? You ought to know that it's futile since your beloved mate will take my side every time, no matter how much I humiliate you!

"You fucking coward! Why aren't you replying to any of my messages? If you show up to my ceremony tomorrow, I'll gladly shove your face into the cesspit, Selene!"

Natalie hammered out a torrent of messages to Selene. The continuous silence drove her to such rage that she ultimately smashed her phone in frustration.

It was Natalie's coming-of-age ceremony the following day. Since it was a massive, lavish affair, nearly half of the pack was present.

Those present began to murmur among themselves once they noticed Callum taking Natalie's hand and leading her onto the stage.

"Natalie is undoubtedly Alpha Callum's true love. Their wedding must be just around the corner."

"Isn't Selene the one who holds the Luna position? Why isn't she here?"

"You mean that lowly orphan? How could someone like her ever be the Luna? I'm sure Alpha Callum had gotten rid of her!"

Upon hearing bits of the gossip, Callum immediately looked grim. He yanked his hand from Natalie's grasp and strode forward, yelling, "What the hell are you guys saying? Selene remains my rightful Luna!

"Natalie is just like a younger sister to me! If I catch any of you spreading this kind of nonsense again, I'll personally rip out your tongues!"

Having said that, Callum's Alpha energy washed over the guests in the banquet hall, causing every werewolf present to pale in fear.

Natalie appeared on the verge of collapse, her eyes brimming with despair and resentment.

Callum lowered his head and fixed Natalie with a deep, contemplative gaze before he turned and strode out of the banquet hall.

Callum was overcome by the sudden urge to see Selene at that moment. He immediately went to her apartment and relentlessly banged on the door.

He knocked for a long time to no avail, until his clamor brought out the landlord, Larry Long. "What's with all the rackets? That unit is empty! That young woman already moved out!"

Larry shouted out his frustration, but when he registered the face of the man before him, he instantly clapped his hand over his mouth in shock and said reverently, "Y-You shouldn't come to such a meager dwelling, Alpha Callum—as this place is unworthy of your noble presence!"

Callum stared intently at Larry, asking, "You're saying that the tenant left? Where did she go, then?"

Larry replied, "That young woman moved out and left the Shadow Wolf pack territory yesterday. She never mentioned a word to me about where she was going—"

"That's impossible! Her grandfather is still in the sanatorium! How could she just abandon him?" Callum suddenly grabbed Larry's collar, his eyes turning bloodshot.

Larry stammered out of sheer terror, "H-Her grandfather died two days ago, Alpha Callum! That young woman is completely alone now!"

I conducted myself with utter confidence and exhibited flawless etiquette during the recognition ceremony, so much so that even the most discerning Alpha from the strictest pack had no choice but to concede my excellence, exclaiming, "Your daughter is truly remarkable, Alpha Benjamin!"I was met with smiles and compliments from every single Alpha there as Dad led me through the crowd to exchange pleasantries during the ceremony.I executed a flawless curtsy before I turned, only to find Callum standing right behind me, looking utterly dazed as he stared at me in disbelief.I barely recognized Callum when I saw him again. He looked awful—despite attending a formal banquet. His formal attire was crumpled and messy, and his entire demeanor was poor.Callum took deliberate steps toward me, pausing, as if uncertain, before reaching out to touch my arm.I quickly took a step back, putting distance between us. "You'd better not touch me. I feel nauseous every time you try."Callum froze

Selene's Point-of-ViewI departed the Shadow Wolf pack with absolutely nothing to my name. I spent two months working on the docks just to make ends meet. I took shelter under bridges and literally had to compete with stray dogs for food.I was now capable of eating a hot dog dropped on the pavement without a flicker of expression, thanks to the torment I suffered over those two years. I could easily get through the night next to the riverbank, despite the cold and dampness.I eventually stumbled upon a pup near the river, who was suffering even more than I was. If it hadn't been for the intermittent aid I provided, the cub would have definitely starved to death in the depths of that freezing winter.I had only rescued him because I wanted someone to keep me company in this lonely life. I never expected that just two months later, the underpass where we used to sleep would have dozens of luxury cars pulling up.It was then that an incredibly handsome, middle-aged man with a comman

Callum took the phone from Jeremy with mounting dread, and the first thing he saw was a torrent of unread messages from Natalie. He couldn't help but widen his eyes in fury as he read the messages. "How can this be? Is this really Natalie's doing? Is she the one who killed Richard?"Callum was in absolute denial of what he was seeing. He roared at Jeremy, "Get to the bottom of this! I demand to know everything that happened!"Jeremy's efficiency was remarkable as he managed to gather a thick pile of documents within half a day. He wore a grim expression as he looked at Callum, saying, "You should brace yourself for this, Alpha Callum. The results of the investigation aren't good." Jeremy's findings were exhaustive. He even managed to secure the surveillance footage that documented Natalie and her cronies harassing Selene. In the surveillance footage, Selene was seen pleading repeatedly for them to release her and begging Natalie for the antidote, as she was completely broke and

Callum recalled that he had constantly transferred funds to Natalie for her tutelage and Selene's living costs. He had been privately pleased that Selene chose to live in the apartment closest to his residence yet never bothered to check her living conditions. In fact, Callum had confidently handed off all responsibility to Natalie, trusting her to manage everything on his behalf. He suddenly realized that his optimism about the entire situation had been tragically misplaced. He quickly spotted the exquisite gift box tucked in the corner of the apartment, his eyes widening in disbelief. He trembled as he opened the gift box, revealing the perfectly intact wolf claw inside that made his heart ache. "Didn't you say that she had packed up and left? Why would she leave behind something so valuable then?"He had personally presented the wolf claw to Selene, an act that signified his acceptance of her as his Luna. She had once guarded it with her life, yet now it lay abandoned in the c

"W-What did you just say?" Callum directly jumped down from the stage and seized the phone from Jeremy. Callum knew it was Selene's phone since it was still adorned with her scribbled smiley-face sticker. He noticed that Selene's phone was completely unresponsive since it was waterlogged."Get this fixed for me, and make it fast!" Callum ordered Jeremy, a brief sense of dread crossing his mind before he quickly suppressed it.Natalie felt an immediate wave of dread as she recalled the stream of vicious messages she had sent Selene in a fit of rage earlier. She was now praying with every fiber of her being that the phone would be permanently irreparable."I need you to head to the sanatorium and bring Selene's grandfather back to the villa as well! I refuse to believe that Selene would leave him behind!" Callum gritted his teeth as he commanded Jeremy, his entire demeanor radiating resentment over Selene's unexpected departure.Natalie was immediately frightened. She attempted to

Callum widened his eyes in surprise, but soon regained his composure and dismissed the thought, saying, "That person you're speaking of couldn't possibly be Selene. I must have come to the wrong apartment."He chose to believe, in that moment, that this couldn't possibly have been Selene's residence, even though he routinely stopped his car right outside this apartment building.Larry nodded deferentially, saying, "You must have gotten the wrong place, Alpha Callum. How could that miserable young woman be the one you're looking for? She lived a very hard life—"Callum ignored Larry completely, grabbing his phone as he rushed out the door. He tried calling Selene again and again, but the phone rang endlessly until the calls stopped going through. He couldn't help but furrow his brow, a hint of helplessness flashing in his eyes. He had grown so used to Selene being available at his beck and call that he had never considered where he should search for her now that she wasn't picking
