“Not a chance in hell,” ang mariing sagot konung imungkahi ni Alejandro na ibigay yung project sa Santos & Villareal Architects.
“Hindi mo nagustuhan yung proposal?” tanong ni Matteo while he plopped down hard on one of the sofas in the office.
“Narinig ko na napakaganda rin naman ito.” Hinaplos ni Alejandro yung document with his finger. “At based on what I’m seeing here, sila mismo yung kailangan natin.”
The second I recognized her, bumalik sa isip ko yung night sa hotel room ko—kung paano gumalaw yung katawan niya under me, and yung sounds of pleasure niya that almost sounded surprised when I first started moving inside her.
Pinilit kong alisin yung memory na ‘yon while I leaned back on the soft leather chair and crossed my ankles, trying to stay focused.
Pero because Maris was part of it, nag-aalinlangan akong piliin sila.
Sa laki ng lungsod ng Makati, gaano ba kalaki yung chance na yung girl I spent one night with and her team would apply for this exact project?
When we met, sure na they were already working on their proposal. Meaning, malamang alam na niya kung sino ako from the start.
After all, hindi lang napakalaking amount yung makukuha ng company nila if they got chosen—it was also a huge chance for a new architect to make a name for herself.
If she thought I’ll give their group special treatment just because of what happened between us, she was wrong.
“Enzo!” tawag-pansin ni Alejandro, and I snapped my eyes to him.
“Ano?” mariin ko ring sagot.
“Nasaan ba yung isip mo?” tanong niya while standing up. “Magdesisyon ka na agad.”
“Magdedesisyon ako before the end of tomorrow.”
Tumango siya nang maikli and walked out of the office, kasama si Matteo, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
Pinindot ko yung intercom.
“Gabriel, kailangan kong gumawa ka ng report about the LEED certification status of hotels near our projects. L-E-E-D. Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.
“Before the end of today.”
“Gagawin ko po. Just to be clear—gusto niyo po ba yung info about all hotels near our projects, or yung mga similar lang sa balak nating itayo?”
“For now, doon tayo sa mga similar sa balak nating itayo. Maaari ka ring kumuha ng data about other sustainability initiatives they’re doing? Isama mo na rin yung any major certifications or awards they’ve received.”
“Naiintindihan ko po. Simulan ko na po agad.”
Sumandal ako sa chair and searchedfor Santos & Villareal Architects on my laptop.
Napakaganda ang reputation nila, and they have offices in different countries. Pero more than that, gusto kong malaman how someone like Maris reached that level. She mentioned she interned there, pero paano siya naging part of the team handling a project this big?
Nakita ko yung picture and info niya below. Unlike the other architects, wala pa siyang major projects under her name. If they got chosen, malaking bagay ito for her career.
Umiling ako slowly.
Hindi maaaring hindi niya sadyang hinanap ako.
At mayroon ding si Miguel. Her ex, I assumed—because she said he was a coworker. She said they weren’t together anymore, pero napansin ko how Miguel’s hand rested on her back as they left, and how he leaned in to whisper to her.
O baka part rin ‘yon ng kasinungalingan?
Wala namang point ang lahat ng ‘yon right now.
And if she thought I’ll invite her back to my bed, she’ll find out soon enough how wrong she was.
Of course there won’t be a repeat of that night. After all, once lang naman ako pwedeng mawalan ng virginity. Now that Miguel and I are back together, what would I need you for?”May dark na kumislap sa mata niya, pero itinaas lang niya ang kilay.“Napaniwala ka niyang balikan siya, did he? Or ikaw ang nag-convince with your newfound sexual confidence?”Nagsimulang sumakit ang ulo ko sa base ng bungo, at tinigan ko siya.“Not that it’s any of your business, but nag-apologize si Miguel at nagtanong kung pwedeng subukan ulit.”Walang sinabi si Enzo. Pumasok siya right into my personal space, ibinaba ang ulo hanggang ang mukha niya ay hovering just above mine.
ENZO“Dad’s been arrested...”Biglang lumitaw yung message sa top ng phone ko while I was checking the stocks from the hotel balcony, and as fast as it appeared, bigla rin itong nawala before I could even process it fully.Mabilis kong pinindot yung message from my brother and read it again, just to make sure I wasn’t imagining things.Dad’s been arrested.Agad ko siyang tinawagan, heart already picking up speed.“Anong dahilan?”Agad na pumasok sa isip ko na baka DUI, something reckless but still within the usual range for him.“Insider trading,” sagot ni Alejandro, voice tight.“Ano ba talaga?”Laging mapangahas si Dad. Pero insider trading? Ibang level na ‘yon ng breaking the law, the kind that doesn’t just hurt him but drags everyone else down with him.“Nakausap ko na yung lawyers. Nakakulong siya and he’ll stay there until the bail hearing tomorrow. Pero according to the lawyers, malamang hindi ito ma-approve, because they’ll treat him as a flight risk.”“Ginawa ba talaga niya?”
MARIS“Nakuha natin! Nakuha natin yung project ng Montenegro Holdings!”Yung sigaw ni Miguel ang gumising sa akin agad-agad kinabukasan.“Talaga ba?”At the same time, kinabahan ako nang husto. Hindi nasayang yung lahat ng paghihirap namin these past weeks. I would be able to participate in designing something that would be seen in major cities across the Philippines.Pero noong sandaling iyon, kumirot yung tiyan ko at the thought of working with Enzo for a long time.“Ihahanda na nila yung space for us this Monday, so doon na tayo magsisimula. May sarili akong office, pero ikaw and the rest of the team would be on the main floor.”“Sige.”“Nag-utos din si Enzo na makipagkita sa each of us privately this Monday.”Kumirot na naman yung tiyan ko, harder this time.“Pribado… para saan?”“Wala akong idea. Sagutin mo lang yung questions niya, sabihin mong you were looking forward to working with him, and ‘yun na lang.”Di

MARISOne month ago pa lang…“You’re a pathetic, cowardly piece of shit, and I hate that I ever believed a word you said. You don’t deserve me, and you sure as hell don’t deserve another second of my time. Go find whatever screwed-up woman you think isn’t ‘too independent,’ because I’m done being the idiot who loved you, you snaky son of a bitch.”Hindi naman talaga ako ganito kapag lasing. Wala na akong energy left para harapin pa yung ibang gulo from other people.“Uy, another drink naman. Empty na ’to eh.” Mukhang super rich and w
