Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Sean Shaw
Early the next morning, Wesley posted the menu in the company group chat. He was not only continuing to order premium beef lunch boxes but had also added a trendy afternoon tea service with fancy pastries and imported fruit flown in from abroad.

I quickly looked up the prices.

A tiny piece of cake cost 120 dollars. A freshly brewed coffee was 88 dollars. As for the imported fruit, just a few strawberries cost 59 dollars.

The group chat exploded with excitement. Messages flooded in one after another.

[You're the best, Wesley! Thanks for looking out for us!]

[Thanks, Wesley! We finally get to stop eating that disgusting food!]

[Wesley, you sure treat us well! Working with you means we get to eat like royalty!]

After soaking up a flood of compliments, Wesley tagged me separately.

[Griffin, want to order something today? I can add yours to the order.]

I turned him down immediately: [No thanks. I can't afford it.]

The moment I sent the message, the group chat fell silent for a second before erupting.

[Can't afford it? The company is paying to improve our meals, and he's acting all high and mighty.]

[LOL. If you can't afford it, stop being jealous. You're ruining the mood!]

Joyce chimed in too: [Wesley is doing something nice for everyone, trying to make our lives better, and you are still making snide remarks. What a killjoy.]

I did not bother replying. I simply closed the chat.

At noon, the delivery arrived right on time.

The office was filled with the rich smell of sea urchin and black truffles. My coworkers gathered around to take pictures, while Wesley stood in the middle of the crowd, grinning from ear to ear.

I had been working overtime for several days, and my stomach was already bothering me. The heavy, greasy smell made me break out in a cold sweat. I had no choice but to retreat to the break room and make myself a bowl of plain noodle soup.

I had barely picked up my bowl when Wesley walked in.

As he passed me, he tilted his hand and dumped the coffee grounds and oily broth from his leftover takeout container straight into my noodles.

Boiling water splashed onto the back of my hand, instantly raising a patch of painful blisters.

"Oh, sorry about that, Griffin," Wesley said, putting on a show of regret. "I thought nobody wanted this."

The commotion quickly attracted a crowd, with Joyce leading the charge.

When she saw the terrible burns on the back of my hand, she showed not the slightest concern. Instead, she scolded me with open disgust.

"Griffin, everyone is having a good time eating together, and you just have to hide in here with your instant noodles? Who are you trying to disgust? Have you not embarrassed me enough already?"

I looked at her calmly. "I'm spending my own money on my own food. How exactly does that embarrass you?"

"You're deliberately trying to humiliate Wesley!" Joyce grabbed my arm and forcibly pulled me away from the counter. "Go apologize to Wesley right now, then join everyone else and order the same meals! You're a grown man. Stop acting like you have to be different from everyone else and making us all look bad!"

I wrenched my arm free and shot back icily, "Your base salary is 8,000 dollars a month. How many days do you think you could afford to eat meals like these?"

Joyce stared at me as if I had lost my mind. "What are you talking about? These are work meals! Why would I have to pay for them?"

Wesley stepped forward, lifting his chin smugly.

"Exactly! As long as the receipts are in order, the company will reimburse us. We work for a big company, so why not take advantage of the benefits? Everyone should eat whatever they want and stop worrying about the cost!"

My coworkers nodded enthusiastically.

"Wesley is a genius! This is exactly how company benefits should be used!"

"Take notes, Griffin. Stop pinching pennies over thirty dollars every day."

"Unlike certain people who get put in charge of ordering lunch and start acting like they own the company, constantly worrying about saving management money."

The company only reimbursed thirty dollars per work meal. I had always handled the orders for our department, so nobody had paid much attention to the details. However, Wesley had definitely been told about the policy during his onboarding. Had he really been so careless that he thought he could get away with charging the company for all that?

Wesley basked in the praise, looking more pleased with himself by the second. Then, he turned back to me.

"Griffin, you've been managing the department's meal-ordering system all this time. Since you clearly don't know how to handle the job, hand over your access to me. I'll take care of everything from now on. It will be much more efficient that way."

I forced myself to ignore the throbbing pain in my burned hand and smiled. "Are you sure?"

Eventually, someone called the police. The officers forcibly separated the two and took them both to the station. As the rightful owner of the watch, I brought the proof of purchase and the boutique's reservation records to file a police report. When Joyce saw me, she struggled desperately as if I were her last hope."Griffin! Tell the police what really happened! We were a couple! I only borrowed the watch for a while!"Without changing my expression, I placed the receipt and the boutique's pickup footage on the table."We've already broken up. She took a valuable item belonging to me without my permission, gave it to someone else, and it was then sold off for cash. I want to file a formal theft complaint."The officers checked the records and determined the nature of the case on the spot.At 30,000 dollars, the value of the watch met the threshold for a serious theft case. Joyce would have to repay the money and could also face prison time. Wesley was in trouble as well. He

After announcing my promotion, the department head sent the legal department to secure all the relevant files in our department. The client's claim for damages would be investigated and handled through the proper legal channels.Just then, Max arrived with several staff members and placed a thick stack of expense reports on the table."Wesley was the person responsible for ordering meals. He personally approved all the expenses that exceeded the budget and signed the department's liability agreement. He's required to repay the tens of thousands of dollars in unauthorized company expenses first."Wesley's expression changed instantly. "Why should I be the one paying? I wasn't the only person eating those meals!""You're the primary person responsible. As for everyone else who ate the meals, the excess charges will be deducted from their monthly salaries in installments according to their actual consumption."The room erupted in outrage. Some coworkers cried that they had only eat

I ignored them and headed straight for the private dining room door.Joyce, furious and humiliated, tried to chase after me. "You aren't going anywhere until you hand over the money!"Before she could get close, the two security guards at the entrance rushed forward and pinned her firmly against the table. The server pulled out his walkie-talkie, his voice turning icy. "Ma'am, if you don't settle the bill immediately, we will have no choice but to call the police."I walked out without looking back. Behind me came the crash of shattered plates, followed by Joyce's hysterical screams."Let go of me! Wesley was the one who arranged this meal! If you want money, go after him! What does this have to do with us? He tricked us! If the police show up, we'll tell them he committed fraud!""Joyce, you were the one egging him on! You had no complaints when you were enjoying all that expensive food. Now that the bill is 80,000 dollars, you want to pretend none of this ever happened?"As I

"Eighty-six thousand dollars?!"Several coworkers practically collapsed into their chairs at the number.Wesley suddenly snapped out of his daze. He hurriedly slapped the agreement he had just signed onto the table and shrieked, "Pay? Why should we pay? Didn't we just sign a yearlong partnership agreement? The restaurant owner personally promised us that tonight's meal would be free if we signed the contract!"Free! The restaurant owner promised that as long as we signed a one-year agreement, tonight's dinner would be on the house!"The server picked up the agreement and glanced through it before nodding. "That's correct. The agreement has been signed, and tonight's meal can indeed be treated as a complimentary tasting."Wesley finally breathed a sigh of relief. However, the server flipped to the appendix and continued. "However, according to the terms of the agreement, you must pay a deposit of 120,000 dollars on the spot for the contract to take effect. In other words, tonight'

"W-What is this?!"The cheers in the private dining room died instantly. As everyone stared at the numbers on their phone screens, their faces drained of color.Joyce glared at her screen and shot to her feet."What's going on? Why is my paycheck zero? And what's this red number underneath it? It says I owe the company 98,000 dollars!""I owe the company 73,000 dollars too! How is that even possible? There must be a bug in the payroll system!"I opened my own pay stub. My salary had come through as usual, with only my performance bonus reduced to the minimum amount. Then I checked everyone else's screens. Almost everyone in the department owed the company tens of thousands of dollars. Wesley had racked up the biggest debt of all, a staggering 186,000 dollars. Not only had he ordered the most expensive meals every day, but he had also signed off a second time on every invoice that exceeded the budget, acting as the person responsible for the department's expenses.Wesley stared

Everyone exchanged bewildered looks.Wesley froze for a moment, then followed the finance manager.A few minutes later, he returned and waved a hand dismissively. "Relax, everyone. We've just been eating too well over the past two weeks, so the system flagged our expenses for exceeding the budget."I took a quick look. All the receipts are legitimate restaurant expenses. I've already signed off on them as normal departmental spending. I will take full responsibility, so everyone can keep eating whatever they want without worrying."Joyce let out a relieved sigh. "See? I told you Wesley always knows what he is doing."My coworkers nodded along.I sat at my desk without saying a word. That had not been a routine approval at all. It was a second authorization required for expenses that exceeded the usual limit. The following day was payday.Wesley sent a message in the company group chat and tagged everyone.[To celebrate successfully passing my probation period, I'm taking every
