Lana's POV

Max's gaze remained on me, eyes burning against mine. I hadn't given him an answer yet. Because I hadn't even expected him to show up now.

“Thought I was asking a question? Where are you off to?” he asked calmly, but even the calmness gave off the calm-before-the-storm energy.

"I'm off to meet with Sophia," I replied quietly, my fingers playing with the edge of my clothes. "We're having a celebratory dinner. It's just one night."

His brows creased in disapproval and it looked like he was about to say something when his phone rang.

Giving me a final glance, he walked into the nearest room to take the call.

Perfect. He didn't say whether or not to wait. Taking my cue, I turned around, made for the door, and out I was.

I knew I wasn't supposed to leave without getting his go-ahead, but I needed the air. So I tried to not care and just took what I thought I needed.

The driver, upon setting eyes on me, opened the door wordlessly and I slipped into the sleek car before I got the chance to second-guess my decision.

My heart kept thudding as the estate gradually vanished behind us, drowned by darkness and tall trees. But still.....I couldn't shake off the feeling of being watched. Max would highly disapprove of my leaving like that.

But whatever. His reaction couldn't be that bad.

We arrived at the bar faster than I estimated we would.

"Darling!!""Sophia squealed loudly the moment she spotted me, pulling me in for a tight hug. "Just take a look at you, gurl. You're legit glowing!"

I laughed — a genuine sound — for the first time in a couple of weeks. For a while, it didn't feel like I was some property to anyone. It didn't feel like I was a girl who had a pricetag hanging from her wedding ring.

I got to be just Lana.

The drinks kept rolling in. The endless laughter bounced off the walls and Sophia tried to make sure every person in attendance knew I had landed myself a Donovan wedding deal.

I got congratulated like I was royalty. I wasn't exactly used to being praised, but I let it wash over me like sunlight did on a cold day. It wasn't every day I got privileged to feel like that — wanted and seen for you.

For a few more hours, I forget that I'd sold my name off to a stranger. But nothing lasts forever..... right?

I confirmed when I got home.

The lights inside the mansion were all still on so it was pretty obvious he hadn't gone to bed yet. I only wished I could get into my room without......

"You're home."

And Max was standing there. And he looked really angry.

He was standing at the crown of the stairs, hands behind his back with his jaw clenched. It was hard to not notice the storm brewing in his eyes.

He still stood at the spot where he'd been standing before the call came in. He waited for me.....

"Where. Were. You?" he asked, quietly counting his words but the rage behind them had me swallowing the lump in my throat.

I needed to calm down. Even if it wasn't real, he was still my husband.....right? There was no way he would hurt me.

Gathering courage from God-knows-where, I slowly stepped forward.

"I was out. With Sophia because I needed....."I was saying when I got interrupted.

"You needed what?" he scoffed bitterly. "You needed to disobey me."

Okay, now I was mad. "I never realized I needed to ask permission before going out for a drink. Thought I was a wife and not your hostage."

Something flashed through his eyes. Something I couldn't quite place...... Sure, there was anger. That one was quite evident. But underneath it lay.... fear? Or was it panic? But it was there one minute and disappeared the next.

"I never said you could go anywhere, did I?" he asked, taking slow strides forward.

"No, but...."I tried sounding like the look on his face didn't scare me.

"You think this marriage is some sorta game?" he closed the space between us. "Listen, you don't get to walk out of my house in the middle of the night like you're some rogue omega in heat."

"But the driver knew where I was....."

"That's not the point!" he thundered, and for the first time, I didn't see him in the all-so-perfect-alpha light. "You think it's safe? I know what I'm saying when I ask you to go nowhere without me with you! In case you've got no idea, you've got people watching you."

I didn't like how I understood his point, but I also didn't like the way I was getting scolded like I was some grade 5 student.

"It's just a contract, you said so yourself. You didn't even want a real wife. You made that point crystal clear."

He opened his mouth to speak, only to shut it back up. His hands kept twitching at his sides like he badly wanted to air something out. Like he wanted to touch something.....but he did none of those.

He just gave me a final glance and walked away.

No idea why, but the action crushed something within me.

"Max..."I called cautiously. "You can't just walk away, say something."

But he was already holding the doorknob to his study.

Halting at my words, he took his time to decide whether or not he'd reply to me. "Tonight, you crossed a line. And I certainly do not reward disobedience. It'd be for your good if you learned to listen to me in the future."

And the door slammed closed, and I stood there speechless. Even my dress suddenly felt suffocating.

But this was it. The life that I signed up for.

I headed for the safety of my room.

I was going to be fine. I just had to accept the reality that my life wasn't going to be fully mine anymore. That I had rules I had to abide by.

I heard a muffled roar and then the sound of a glass shattering.

Taking off my dress, I resolved to try to fit into Max's world. For my sake at least.

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    32. Boiling temptation

Max’s POVThe weight of Lana in my arms felt heavier than it should have. Not physically because she was light and in fact nearly boneless in my grip but emotionally. Her body radiated heat through my shirt, branding me, like something inside her was trying to claw its way out.I moved fast, not running, but just shy of it. Sophie trailed after me, murmuring questions I didn’t have the energy or answers for.“Is she okay? What’s wrong with her? What’s happening?”“Quiet,” I said in a low and controlled tone. She immediately shut up. Smart girl.By the time we reached my car, Lana’s breathing had turned shallow, like she was drowning in the air itself. Her skin glistened, slick with sweat, her neck exposed as her head rolled against my shoulder. She murmured something.I paused, holding her tighter.“Again,” I said softly.“…hurts,” she breathed. “Hot. Everything… hurts.”I said nothing. Just adjusted her, buckled her in, and slammed the door.My apartment wasn’t that far away thankful

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    31. The heating Phase

Lana’s POVThe music became way too loud at some point. The bass thudding in my chest like it had found a second heart to sync with, each beat heavier than the last. Light strobed in fractured flashes, silver and violet, washing over skin and sequins and bare teeth smiling too hard. The scent of perfume, alcohol, heat, and something sugary hung like a mist. Sophie leaned into me, laughing, lips glossed and eyes glittering, holding out a drink that glowed pink under the shifting lights.I didn’t even hear what she said. I just smiled half-lazy, trying to match her energy. Then it hit me clean and absolute, low in my stomach. A violent, searing twist that made the floor tilt beneath my heels. My breath vanished and my grip slackened on the glass.I felt a sudden sharp pain. It was both hot and cold at the same time.My body stiffened instinctively. I felt my smile falter, slide right off my face. My knees almost gave out. I staggered back a step, hand flying searching for support. My s

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    30. The rift

Lana’s POVSophie handed me the suspiciously pink drink with a proud flourish, already sipping from her own like it was liquid gold.“That man was practically undressing you with his eyes,” she said, wiggling her eyebrows. “Like seriously, who the hell was he?”I turned the black card over in my hand again. “Leonard,” I muttered.Sophie let out a long, dramatic whistle. “Leonard. That even sounds mysterious. Please tell me he’s not another accountant or someone boring like that. That man has villain origin story energy.”I rolled my eyes, tucking the card into my clutch. “I don’t know what he is. He wouldn’t say much. Just flirted and gave me this.”“An address,” she said, peeking into my bag. “That’s either really romantic or really cult-y.”“Probably both,” I said under my breath. We were sitting on a low bench near the food stalls, fairy lights casting a gentle shade across Sophie’s face. A cover band was playing a mellow version of some classic pop song in the background, people c

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    29. Curiosity Kills the Cat

Lana’s POV I saw a tall, dark haired man with high cheekbones. His eyes… God, his eyes… were so focused on me.He didn’t look away even after I caught him staring at me. He just smiled in a weird way.I swallowed hard. I thought he’d just keep staring until he started walking toward us.“Sophie,” I murmured, elbowing her.“Hm?” She followed my gaze, then straightened a little. “Oh. Ohhh. Hello, Tall-Dark-and-Mysterious. Do you know him?”“No.” I said too quickly. “I don’t think so.”He reached us in seconds, and up close, he was even more intense.“Lana.” His voice wrapped around my name like it belonged to him.I frowned. “Do I know you?”His smile widened just slightly, eyes scanning my face with too much familiarity. “Didn’t think I’d see you here. Max said you didn’t like crowds.”The world tilted a little under my feet.“What?” I asked, voice sharper than I meant it to be. “How do you? how do you know Max?”He tilted his head. “Interesting that your first question isn’t how I kn

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    28. The Weird Encounter

Lana’s POVThe car ride was quiet at first, just the delicate slow hum of the engine and Sophie’s playlist playing something mellow in the background. My fingers rested on my lap, clasped tightly together, but not because I was nervous. It was more like… I didn’t know how to feel at the moment. It had been so long since I did something that wasn’t about surviving. So damn long since I got dressed with the intention of being seen.I glanced at my reflection in the car window, the streetlights flickering across my features. The dress Sophie got me shimmered faintly even in the dark. My hair looked immaculate and she’d made me wear a soft pink gloss that tasted faintly of strawberries just before we left.“You feeling okay?” Sophie asked, glancing over at me from the driver’s seat, her tone light but filled with that knowing sound only she could pull off.I nodded slowly. “I think so.”She grinned. “You look drop dead gorgeous, Lana. They’re not ready, trust me.”I let out a soft laugh,

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    27. The blurry lines in between

Lana’s POVI sank onto the cold floor of my living room, the sound of the slammed door still continuously ringing in my head. My lips were really bruised, my breath shaky, and my hands trembled as I picked up my phone. I stared at the screen, then finally pressed the call button. The silence in my house was unbearable. My whole body trembled, as if the weight of everything that had just happened was still pressing down on my chest, refusing to let me breathe. My lips were still swollen from his kiss. My neck burned where his fingers had wrapped. It was too much. All of it.Max’s anger. His jealousy. His obsession. The way he forced himself into my home like he had every right. Like he owned me.But worse, far worse, was how my body had responded. How part of me had leaned into that kiss. How some traitorous part of me had badly wanted him. Why? Why does he make me feel like this? I pressed my fists to my temples, then grabbed my phone and shakily dialed the only person I could. It ran
