“Amira! Amiii!” I almost dropped the plant pot in my grasp as Ruelle ran over, screaming my name like her ass was on fire.
“Ru, did you forget again that we have a sensitive hearing? I can still hear you if you whisper.” I scolded her before dropping the pot before I accidentally dropped it. My dad wouldn’t like that.
I used my pinky finger to scratch my ear as it was ringing because of how loud she was screaming. I rolled my eyes as I watched her run towards me. Even though I corrected her a billion times, she was going to do it again.
She silently screeched to a stop in front of me and placed her hands on her knees while she panted dramatically.
“What is it now?” I asked with a roll of my eyes. Ruelle was a drama queen and would always be.
“What are you still doing here?” She asked after she straightened up.
My brows shot up at her question and I pursed my lips while placing my hands on my hips “I should be the one asking you that. Why are you here when you should be getting ready for school?”
We had about twenty minutes to get to school but she had training clothes on instead.
“Amiii” she whined with a dramatic roll of her eyes. “Did you forget what today is?”
I scoffed, “What does the Zeta's team selection have to do with us missing school? Only Koa is allowed to miss school today.”
The Zeta was the defence head of our pack. Our Pack, Red Haven was the largest pack in the world which meant we needed many wolves on the defense team.
The Zeta team was divided into three sub-units. The enforces who maintained order in the pack by ensuring the pack members followed the pack laws and they were usually the largest wolves physically.
We also had the warriors who fought in wars or battles and border patrol who defended the pack borders.
Koa, our best friend, was going to be the next Zeta when we turned 18 in two weeks so he had to select the people who would be on his defence team today. The old Zeta team will still be active but most would retire as they were older now.
To pick his team, Koa would have to hold an event to test all the wolves who wanted to join his team and pick the best candidates for each division.
“You are going to be Beta, Amii. You should be there as well." Ruelle cried out, her hands going up in an exaggerated show of dramatics.
“No, I don't. You just want to check out sweaty, hot guys,” I accused, and she pouted, knowing I caught her.
“Fine” she whined, “you caught me, but that's really not the main reason you need to go. Soren and Koa are sparring, and you know what happens when Soren fights."
My eyes widened in disbelief. “Soren is fighting?”
I took off without waiting for her and she growled in annoyance behind me before running after me.
“That's one way to thank me for the information." She hissed but I ignored her and ran faster, my feet barely touching the ground as I raced across the pack towards the training facility.
Ruelle caught up with me just as I stopped at the entrance to Sparta, our training facility. Our pack was well known not just as the largest pack but also as the most technologically advanced one as well.
The training hall was one of the largest buildings in our pack. It was so advanced that we could train with technology that was able to simulate real-life scenarios to help us train as though we were on the battlefield.
“Come on, we are going to miss the fight." Ruelle pulled me inside the hall and I stumbled after her, trying not to fall on my face as we reached the hall for combat training.
The combat hall was already packed with wolves who cheered excitedly at whatever was going on in the middle of the circle they had formed around the combat ring.
We found ourselves in front and my eyes found him immediately.
Soren.
My future Alpha, my best friend, and the subject of my sinful dreams every night.
Soren moved like a god when he fought. The way his muscles rippled with every blow and how his core clenched with every hit he took was a form of art that needed to be studied. I wasn’t the only one who admired him as the crowd cheered in admiration for Soren and Koa.
“Come on, Soren” I yelled as he barely managed to dodge a blow from Koa.
Soren’s eyes found me immediately when he heard my voice, and he sent me a wink that made me giggle like a young pup with a crush.
“You both are sick. Just mate already." Ruelle groaned beside me, and I smacked her shoulder playfully in warning even though I desperately wished her words would come true.
I was going to become the Beta of the pack and Soren would pick a chosen mate to be Luna when it was time to become Alpha.
“You know it's not possible,” I told her while trying to mask the disappointment in my tone.
“It's not impossible. You both just want to keep insisting on being best friends. The elders won't be against the both of you mating” she pointed out and she was right to an extent.
The majority of the pack always made jokes about how Soren and I would have been mates if fated mates were still a thing but Soren didn’t share the same thoughts as the rest of the pack.
He was always quick to refute the claims and stop whatever jokes they came up with, so I had to learn to hide the feelings I had developed for him. I didn’t want to lose my friend because of a stupid crush.
There were no words to describe the way Soren made me feel. He carried this rugged yet youthful look that gave him a scary but innocent aura. It was a deadly combination that my heart could barely manage.
As he fought, I caught a glimpse of the fire in his green eyes that reminded me of the vast forest just inches from the pack.
I got lost in him like I always did. Soon, the crowd faded away and it became just me and him in the entire room. I swallowed the lump in my throat and tried to ignore the heat that fueled my body as I watched him.
“Don’t you think Soren’s blows are too strong?” Ruelle asked, shaking me softly until I was pulled out of my thoughts.
“What?” I asked, unable to tear my gaze from Soren but she shook me more urgently and I turned my attention to her.
“Soren?” she asked again, gesturing towards the duo that were fighting.
“What’s wrong with him?” I asked, my eyes scanning his form but seeing nothing wrong with him.
“His blows are getting too strong for Koa.” She said with worry towards our friend.
I watched Soren again with more attention and I noticed what she was talking about. Soren’s blows had more force on them now like he really wanted to hurt Koa.
Murmurs began to rise from the wolves as they noticed it as well and I could feel the tension rise as they noticed Koa switched his movements to defence.
Soren’s eyes turned red, screaming danger. This was one of the reasons why we were never separated.
Soren has always had anger issues since he was a child. His parents had tried multiple means to help him control it better, but none worked except for me. It was a discovery we made ourselves when we were still pups. Soren had gotten out of hand, and a word from me had the anger filtering out of his body like water.
It had caused a lot of trouble, especially with the Alpha. There was some tension between the Alpha and my father, but it didn't last for long.
After that, the Alpha decided I would take over as Beta from Ezekiel, the pack’s current Beta. I don’t have any Beta blood, but the pack agreed since I was as strong and fast as most Betas, even at a young age. And it also helped that Ezekiel and his wife, Adela, didn't have a child.
Rune, the future Delta and our friend inched towards Soren and Koa, but Soren sent him a warning growl that froze his movements.
“Amira” Rune whispered and gestured towards Soren.
Koa was now struggling as Soren spiralled out of control.
“Amira, now!!!” Rune yelled when he noticed Soren lifting his fist with the intent to knock out Koa. His eyes were bloody red now. A sign that we should not let that blow land on Koa.
I dashed towards the middle of the grounds and pulled Koa back just as the killing blow made its way towards him.
I closed my eyes as the fist came flying towards me as I now stood in Koa’s former place.
AUTHOR’S POVElias sat at the foot of the bed playing with the toy his dad had gotten him. He was bored, but his mother had warned him not to leave the house until they were back, which meant he couldn’t go outside to play. ‘“When will Ez wake up so we can play?” Elias whined with a pout on his lips. He turned to his brother, who was still unconscious.Elias scrambled off the bed and crawled to lie beside his brother. “Wake up, Ezzy. I miss you,” he whispered and leaned closer to his brother. “We have a daddy now.”A slight movement from his brother caused him to sit up with wide eyes. “Ez?” Elias whispered, his little heart racing as he watched his brother to confirm if he was the one who had moved.“Ez!” he cried out when his brother began to stir. “Mummy. Ez is waking up” Elias jumped down from the bed to run out of the room when he remembered he was the only one at home.He ran back to the bed, climbed on it, and leaned closer to peer down at his twin brother’s face just in time
AMIRALeonora’s hung over my head like a dark cloud. She was right. If Soren was insisting I stay, what would happen to Ivannah?Ivannah had been a thorn in my side for years. I hated her and her mother for everything they had ever done to me. But at the same time, I didn’t want to be the one to ruin her marriage to Soren even though I knew she was never supposed to be at his side. That wasn’t the way I lived my life. It was their way and the last thing I wanted to do was do anything they would ever do.All eyes were on me even though Soren had said he would deal with it. They were waiting for me to say I would let Soren deal with it. I couldn’t meet any of their gazes as I spoke “There is no need to deal with anything because I am leaving” No one said anything at first and I was afraid to look at the expressions on their faces. “The hell you are” Soren growled, his voice bellowing in the office. “You hear her?”His anger was overwhelming but I didn’t flinch because I expected it.
SORENThe room was suffocating and I wanted to get out. It was too much. The lies, betrayals and secrets that had all been laid bare for me felt like a fog that was blinding me and pulling me under. I looked at my father who stood unrepentant in the middle of the room and I still couldn’t believe what I had just heard. “You experimented on me” I said, this time my voice was calm but it was a huge contrast to how I felt on the inside. It was as though I was finally digesting everything that had been said. My father knew what I was. He knew I had a mate he tried to kill and just like Ami said, he tried to play God. “Why did you do it? To fight Curtis? Is that why you decided to do this?” I asked “Did you do it? Was that why you stopped being a scientist?” Noah had a weary expression but I couldn’t care less about the guilt on his face. All I wanted was answers and not the regret they didn’t have until they got caught. “Yes” He confessed “I was the head scientist of the operation
AMIRA I had not spoken a word to Dad from when we left the house until we arrived in front of Soren’s office. It was hard to ignore the whispers and fingers pointed at me as I walked to the pack house. It was the first time I had shown my face in public since I had returned, so the members were shocked to see that the rumours were true. Ruelle and Koa didn’t follow us to the office. We separated at the entrance and I pleaded with Ruelle to go back to my house so she would keep an eye on the twins while I thrashed this matter once and for all. “Ami” Dad called with a quiet tone but I was not ready to look at him. He would have to explain everything here. I knocked twice and pushed the door open. The air inside Soren’s office was thick with tension the moment we stepped inside. My eyes found Soren immediately and my chest tightened when I saw the anger and shock on his face. I wondered what happened before we got here. His shoulders were tense as though he was preparing for
AMIRA I stood by the edge of the bed and watched as Meridia worked quickly. Her old but experienced hands moved with ease and care as she tilted Ezra's head slightly and brought the vial to his lips while chanting softly. I held my breath as I watched every drop of liquid from the vial disappear into my baby’s mouth while I prayed silently that it worked. Dad placed a reassuring grip on my shoulder but I couldn’t take my eyes off Meridia. I was biting my tongue so I wouldn’t start to question Meridia and the effectiveness of the vial for the nth time. She said I needed to trust her and that was what I was trying to do. “It’s done” Meridia announced after placing Elias back on the bed and adjusting the covers over his little body. She stood up and faced Dad and I “The potion should kill off all the venom and the body will purge it out” My throat tightened “So he’s...” “He is going to be fine now, child. You have nothing to fear anymore” She assured me “His body will expel the
SOREN I stormed into my office, ready to slam the door and let out a growl that measured the intensity of my rage, but paused when I saw my parents waiting for me in the office. I was ready to kick them out, especially my father because I was not in the mood to deal with any of his bullshit today. “Look, whatever you have to say, keep it till later. I am not in the mood…” “Is it true?” Mum interrupted before I could finish my demand for them to leave. “Is what true?” I could see through the cracks of her false composure that she was worried. With the way she kept glancing at my father, I knew this would turn out like our other discussions, where he had never been able to control himself. “That Amira is back and with children?” I sighed tiredly. I had not bothered to tell them Amira was back or with my kids because I had been busy with Elias. “Yes” My dad shot to his feet, appearing in front of me in the blink of an eye. “And those children? Are they yours?” I clenched
AMIRA “Talk?” Dad asked with a confused expression “About what?” I felt a tiny tug at the helm of my shirt before I could answer and I looked down to see Elias with wide teary eyes staring up at me. “Eli?” I bent down so I was at eye level and wiped his cheeks “Why are you crying, baby?” “Why did Daddy leave? Is he angry with me?” His trembling voice broke my heart and I pulled him into a tight hug. “No, baby” I peppered multiple on both sides of his face “Daddy isn’t mad at you” “Then why did he leave? I want to go with him” Fresh waves of tears appeared again. My heart clenched painfully in my chest. There was no doubt that Ezra had gotten attached to Soren. I wanted to be happy that Elias found it so easy to bond with Soren just barely two days after they met but at the same time, it hurt me that he would not be able to spend much time with his father since I planned to leave the pack when Ezra had recovered. “Did you spend all the time when I was gone with your fa
AMIRAI stepped out of the portal into the house. Thankfully, the portal brought us back to where we had left off.“The house is quiet. Are they at the pack house?” Koa asked as he stepped out after me.“No, they are still here. I smell them. They should be at the back” Koa followed me to the garden. As soon as I stepped through the back door, familiar delighted gasps reached my ears.“Mummy” Elias squealed with wide eyes when he saw me. His small feet pattered across the floor as he raced towards me with his small arms outstretched.I bent down and picked him up as soon as he reached me. I missed him so much. I had never stayed away from them for this long. I peppered kisses all over his face and was rewarded with excited giggles as he tried to push me away playfully.“I missed you, Eli. So so much” I leaned back to study his face.“Me too, but I had so much fun playing with Daddy and Grandpa. Did you bring the medicine for Ezra? Will he be fine now?”Amira softened, brushing his curl
IVANNAHI stared at the door with a new kind of numbness and hurt. I could feel everything I had ever worked for slip away from my fingers like water; it was terrifying. I lifted my hand to pound the door down. How dare Soren do this to me?I suffered years of humiliation and insults to remain by his side, as the Luna of the pack and he runs to Amira as soon as she returns. What happened to the years of hatred he harboured for that bitch? My hand fell back lifelessly against my sides. There was no use knocking. The result would only be as cold-hearted as the one I had just received, if not more.“Mum will know what to do” I whispered to myself before I turned away from the door.I ignored the sneers and looks of curiosity as my legs hurried me towards my mother. My breaths were uneven and ragged as I picked up the pace, almost in a sprint as my desperation rose.Mom had moved into the pack house after she had a nasty fight with Dad after Amira left. Dad was hell-bent on finding her ba
