The vacation was two days away. For the first time in months, the mansion was quiet.Evelyn came downstairs wearing a simple cream dress, expecting breakfast.

Instead, she found Damian's entire family sitting around the dining table. Waiting.

His mother looked up with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "There she is."

His sister pushed a stack of glossy brochures across the table. "Since you're taking my brother to Europe, we made a little list."

Evelyn frowned."A list?"

Jason grinned."Things we want."

She picked up the papers.A Rolex.Three Hermès bags.A diamond necklace.Limited-edition sneakers. Luxury watches. Designer coats.

The total was well over three hundred thousand dollars. Evelyn looked up slowly."You can't be serious."

Jason leaned back in his chair."You're rich."

His sister shrugged."It's not like you'll miss the money."

His mother clicked her tongue."We've told everyone our son is taking us to Europe next year. Imagine how embarrassing it'll be if we don't have anything nice."

Evelyn placed the papers back on the table."I'm not buying these."

His mother's smile disappeared."What did you say?"

"I said no."

Jason laughed."I knew she'd start acting like this."

His sister folded her arms."I told you marrying rich people always comes with conditions."

Evelyn stared at her in disbelief."Conditions? I've paid your tuition for four years. I bought your car. I paid off Jason's gambling debts."

Jason's jaw clenched.

"I renovated this house."

His mother slammed her teacup onto the table."And you've reminded us every chance you get!"

Evelyn blinked."I've never—"

"Enough!"Everyone turned.Damian had just walked in.His tie hung loosely around his neck as if he'd rushed home from work.He looked from his family to Evelyn."What happened?"

His mother stood immediately."Ask your wife."

Damian looked at Evelyn."Ev?"

She swallowed."They asked me to spend over three hundred thousand dollars on gifts."

"And?"

She stared at him."And... I said no."

He was quiet for a moment."You could've handled it better."

The words landed like a slap.Evelyn searched his face.Surely he didn't mean—

"They're excited," Damian continued. "They're my family."

"So am I."

"You know that's not what I meant."

"No, Damian." Her voice trembled. "I don't know what you mean anymore."

Without another word, she turned and walked upstairs. She didn't stop until she reached their bedroom. She locked the door.Only then did she let herself cry. When had she become the outsider in her own marriage?A soft knock came at the door.

"Ev?"

She wiped her tears."What?"

"It's me."

She opened the door.Damian stepped inside carrying a small velvet box."I'm sorry."

She looked at him without speaking."I shouldn't have taken sides."

He opened the box.Inside was a delicate diamond bracelet."I saw it yesterday and thought of you."

Her breath caught , It was beautiful."You didn't have to..."

"I wanted to." He gently fastened it around her wrist."It'll match your dress in Paris."

The first stop on their vacation.

He smiled at her with the same smile that had made her fall in love years ago "I miss us."

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears."So do I."

He wrapped his arms around her hollding her tightly. As if he were afraid of losing her. She hugged him back.

Three days later

Evelyn had barely finished packing when the doorbell rang. She wasn't expecting anyone. One of the maids hurried to answer it before returning a moment later.

"Ma'am... there's a young lady here asking for Mr. Damian."

Evelyn looked up."For Damian?"

"She says it's urgent."

Before Evelyn could respond, the woman walked in. She couldn't have been older than twenty-five. Beautiful , elegant and confident.

The woman's eyes landed on Evelyn first. "You must be Mrs. Sinclair."

Evelyn smiled politely. "Yes , and you are?"

The woman didn't answer. Instead, she reached into her handbag and placed a thick brown envelope on the coffee table."I think you deserve to know the truth."

Damian walked into the living room at that exact moment. The color drained from his face. "What are you doing here?"

The guard stopped outside her cell."Visitor."Evelyn didn't look up. "If it's my husband, tell him to leave.""It isn't."She slowly lifted her head. Ten minutes later, she was led into the visitation room. Marcus was already there. He stood the moment he saw her.For a long second, neither of them spoke. His eyes traveled over her face, taking in every bruise, every dark circle, every sign that prison had already begun changing her.His hands clenched into fists. "They're not feeding you properly."Evelyn gave a weak smile. "Hello to you too.""You've lost some pounds.""Yes well I don't recommend the menu". she joked. He gave her a sharp look. A painful silence settled between them. Finally, Marcus picked up the phone "You look terrible."She laughed. It wasn't a happy laugh. "I've been accused of trafficking drugs. I wasn't expecting a spa treatment."Marcus didn't laugh. He simply stared at her. "You still joke when you're hurting.""You still overreact.""I don't overreact.""

The courtroom was packed.Reporters lined the back row, their cameras aimed at the woman who had once graced the covers of business magazines. Now she stood in handcuffs. The same people who had praised her success now whispered behind folded hands."She doesn't look like a criminal.""They never do."Evelyn lowered her eyes.Marcus leaned closer. "Don't listen to them."She nodded weakly."I've filed for bail. The prosecution has no direct evidence that you knew those drugs were in the suitcase. This is our best chance to get you home.""Do you really think the judge will grant it?"Marcus looked her straight in the eye. "Yes."It was the first hopeful word she'd heard since the airport. She clung to it. The courtroom doors opened.Damian walked in.He was dressed in a black suit, his face pale, his eyes red as though he hadn't slept. His mother followed behind him, clutching a handkerchief. His sister cried quietly.Jason kept his head lowered. They looked like a family shattered by

Evelyn's whole body shook. She felt out of her own body. Like this was a movie. "No please I didn't do this it isn't mine!! ". she cried . Marcus stepped forward. "My client is a well-known businesswoman with no criminal record. She is not a flight risk." "That decision isn't mine." "I'll apply for bail immediately." "You may." The officer's voice remained calm. "But until the court hears the matter , Mrs. Sinclair will remain in custody." Evelyn's legs nearly gave way. "No..."She looked from Marcus to the handcuffs .to the suitcase that had somehow become the weapon used against her. Marcus gently took her trembling hands in his. "Evelyn." She looked at him through blurred eyes. "I need you to be strong." Her lips quivered. "I can't. Please Marcus don't let them take me " "You have to." He lowered his voice so only she could hear. "And listen to me very carefully. I don't think this was an accident." Evelyn stared at him. For a long moment neither of them said the name

"No..."Evelyn shook her head, her bun coming loose."There has to be a mistake."The handcuffs bit into her wrists as she tried to pull away."I don't even know what those things are!"The senior customs officer stayed expressionless."Mrs. Sinclair, you'll have a chance to explain.""No, I can explain now. Please, just listen."She turned to the crowd behind the barrier."My husband packed that suitcase."He was supposed to be here."Her voice broke."He stepped away for work. He's coming back. Please, wait."The officers exchanged a glance."Your husband's name?""Damian Carter."The officer nodded to a younger colleague."Locate him."Hope flickered in Evelyn's chest. They'll find Damian so he'll explain everything. He loves me. He wouldn't let this happen.Minutes dragged by.People slowed to stare. Some whispered. CHAPTER EIGHT "Mrs. Sinclair, your driver is here."Evelyn looked up from the vanity mirror.Six in the morning. She wasn't usually awake this early, but excitement had chased away her sleep. She and Damian hadn't traveled alone since their honeymoon.Maybe this trip really would be a fresh start. She zipped up her makeup bag and walked downstairs.Damian was already waiting in the foyer. He looked impossibly handsome in a charcoal-gray suit. When he saw her, he smiled."You look beautiful." She felt her cheeks warm."You're just saying that." "I'm really not."He walked over and straightened the collar of her coat."For the record I've always thought you were out of my league." She laughed softly."Now you're flirting?" "I'm trying."He leaned down and kissed her forehead."No fighting today." "No fighting," she agreed. Just then, Damian's mother walked into the foyer carrying a small paper bag. "Oh, good. You're both still here."She held the bag out to Evelyn."I made your fav
