View MoreIt was the beginning of the end. The last day of my mating and the first day of my freedom. The day I divorced my cold and uncaring mate. I’d prepared for six months to leave this man and now my preparations were done. I just had to serve him the divorce papers and be on my way. It should take a few minutes to finalize because I knew my mate, the cold and heartless Alpha, would be excited beyond words to no longer share a bond with me.
“What’s this?” His deep green eyes raised to look at me as I carefully placed the paper and his ring in front of him.
“Divorce papers,” I said. “Here is a pen.” I fished out a pen from my bag. “Don’t worry, I don’t want any of your properties so once you sign, I will go file it and it’ll be the end.”
“You’re divorcing me?” He asked, his brows furrowed as he scowled, his expression dark.
“Yes.” I nodded flippantly. “There’s no need to mask your excitement. I’m giving you what you want so hurry up and sign.”
“Don’t get on my nerves, Natalie.” He tossed the papers to the floor. “And get lost!”
“I’ll get lost as soon as you sign the divorce papers.” I calmly gathered the papers he threw to the floor and placed them back on his table.
“Don’t bother me!” He barked, his expression worsening.
His deep scowl used to frighten me; the anger and annoyance seemed ingrained in his very being. But not today. Today was the beginning of the end so I was prepared to face this hostility for the last time.
“Sign the papers and you’ll never have to deal with my annoying self ever again.” I pressed my hands together to stop myself from fidgeting.
“Is this a trick? Are you trying to get my attention with such a silly method?” He stood as he snarled at me, causing my wolf to sneer.
“No, I – What the hell are you doing!?” I watched in horror as he ripped the divorce papers into shreds right in front of me. “Kian!” I shouted in horror, reaching out my hands to catch the pieces of paper falling, my mouth wide open.
“Do you think our mating is a joke?” He glared down at me after he finished ripping the papers to tiny shreds. “Do you think you can wake up one morning and say you’re bored and get a divorce? You’re the Luna of the largest pack in the entire western and eastern regions so take your duties a bit more seriously and get out of my office!”
“Kian, I’m giving you what you want!” I lost my mind as I saw the papers strewn across his desk and the floor. “How could you rip the papers like that?”
For six months, I’d put together everything and meticulously planned my exit but I didn’t dream that my mate would tear the divorce papers like this.
“Natalie, you don’t know what I want so don’t anger me anymore.” If he got any angrier, he’d combust.
His face had turned a ghastly red and his chest was rising and falling at a rapid pace, expanding so much that it felt like a button from his shirt would fly off at any moment and hit my nose.
“We are mates and this mating is for life! I take my vows seriously and you should too.”
“What vows? Why are you being like this? There’s no reason for us to continue this relationship. You have to divorce me, Kian. You must!” Only then could I put all this in the past and start my new life far from him. As long as I was still bound to this man, he could do to me as he pleased and I’d had enough.
“I’m not divorcing you.” He said and bellowed, “Matthew!”
A few seconds later, his Beta rushed into the office with a pale face. He looked around at the scattered paper and then at me before he turned to Kian.
“Is there a problem?” He asked as he schooled his expression.
“Yes.” Kian adjusted his tie. “Natalie isn’t feeling well. Take her home.”
“Luna Natalie –“ Matthew turned to me with a terrified expression. “Let's go. I’ll drive you home.”
“Don’t call me that! Don’t call me that! I’m nobody’s Luna. Kian, you have to divorce me!”
“You’re driving me crazy,” he muttered. “You’re driving me crazy, Natalie,” he continued to whisper, “You’re driving me fucking crazy, Natalie!” He ended up shouting.
“Divorce me and I won’t drive you crazy anymore. You hate me and I’ve come to dislike you. There’s no love lost between the two of us so let me go.”
“No love – no love –“ His nostrils flared and a fire lit up his eyes. Sensing danger, Matthew and I took several steps back. “You’re my mate. We’re bound to each other even in death.”
“Kian –“
“Shall I call in the warriors to drag you home?” I swallowed at his fierce expression.
No, I didn’t want that to happen. I had suffered enough humiliation. I wanted to walk out of the Dark Howl pack with my head held high.
“Good, now, go with Matthew. Matthew, drive her home. I’ll have your head if you don’t deliver her to the mansion within the next thirty minutes.”
“You can’t be serious?” I gaped at him as the colour drained from Matthew’s face.
“Try me and see.” He sat down and turned his gaze away from us.
“Luna – Luna Natalie, this way, please.” Matthew opened the door and escorted me to the car.
As we walked out, the other workers in the office stared and snickered at me as I left with my head down. My legs shook and Matthew had to support me all the way to the car as I stared blankly at the ground in disbelief.
I never thought that Kian would not want to divorce me but I must have underestimated how much he hated me. He hated me enough to shackle me to his side, to deny me my freedom even if it meant he too, would be bound.
She wasn’t involved? She had helped me of her own volition? It would make more sense to know that she’d been planted by Kian along with the others but knowing she was not – it gave me a sense of relief. Everything hadn’t been a lie. I’d truly escaped Kian.I’d escaped once so I could do it again.“If it’s love you want, I can pretend to love you,” Kian ran a hand across my cheek, making me shiver. It was a shiver of disgust.I’d loved this man with every fibre of my being but now all that was left was loathing. Disgust. He disgusted me. How could he be so selfish? How could he look me in the eye and say something so vile?It wasn’t his fault.I’d made myself a joke for him so he thought it was fine to play with me like this. Like a worthless toy.I gripped the sides of my head, covering my ears as I gnashed my teeth. He was like a curse. My hands dropped to my sides and for a second, I thought of hitting him, hitting something. I wanted to scream but I held myself. There was something
I was confined to the room. There were no iron bars but every time I took a step out the door, I was met with unfamiliar people who stared at me until I retreated. I hadn’t seen Kian since he carried me back into the room, leaving me with my thoughts.“Shouldn’t you be sleeping?” Think of the devil and he waltzes in.He’d changed the bandage around his chest. It left me tempted to ask why he had a bandage and why it stayed on for so long but I wasn’t sure I cared much about his well-being at this point.“Are you worried about this?” He asked, pointing at his chest.“I’m not.”“Their weapons were poisoned. They have formulated a new poison and we are yet to find the antidote.”“How deadly is it?” I asked.“As you can see, I’m bleeding out. I’m not sure I have long to live.”My chest pricked as my wolf let out a gasp of horror. I stared at him with my mouth hanging slightly open but then he laughed and I realized I’d been played.“I’m not going to die, Natalie.” He climbed into bed and
“You’re hurt,” I said as I watched him walk away with stiff shoulders that hid the awkwardness of his gait.“Who wouldn’t be hurt when their mate deceives them and runs away?” He asked with a snort.“No, you’re physically hurt. You’re in pain, aren’t you? And you’re hiding it.”“Do you care?” He shot back.I quietened. Did I care? I didn’t but my wolf – this darn wolf – she cared. It had been over a month but the mate bond didn’t even show the slightest hint of weakening. If anything, it seemed to have gotten stronger.“Kian,” I stopped him before he could leave. “Are you not going to tell me anything? Who were those people?”What was going on?“You don’t have to worry about them. Eat, sleep and waste money like you always do. Forget you ever encountered those brats.”“They were after me, weren’t they? They wanted to kill me. You didn’t – you didn’t send them to intimidate me.”“I must be the worst man on earth in my mate’s eyes,” he shook his head in self-deprecation. “Like I said,
There was blood on me, blood around me, blood everywhere. In the corner where I was huddled, I tried not to look into the blank eyes of the dead man staring straight at me with accusation in his eyes. I hadn’t killed him but his blood had splattered all over my clothes. Some of it had touched my tongue as I screamed when he was cut down.“Natalie.” Kian moved the body with his feet as he squatted in front of me. “It’s over. Let’s go.”There was blood on him. There was blood everywhere. It was all I could perceive. All I could see around me. The scent overwhelmed me. It was like a scene from a nightmare that even my wildest imagination could not come up with. There was blood everywhere.Bodies everywhere.“Natalie.” He stretched out a hand to me. There was blood on his hands. It coated his fingertips and seemed to drip down.He must have noticed how uncomfortable it made me. The blood. The hand. He took out a handkerchief and wiped his hand but I could still see it. There was too much
It was at the crack of dawn my eyes opened as I felt a presence in my room. My heart which had not known any rest for several days as my wolf had been on alert, feeling as if I was being watched, jerked as I scrambled upright in bed to turn on my bedside lamp. There was no one in my room but there was a distinct smell that did not belong to me, a smell of smoke combined with a strong body odour.“Am I going crazy?” I asked myself, sniffing the air but the smell was so pungent, it couldn’t simply be my imagination.I got out of bed and looked around my room but there was no one. I even went as far as looking underneath the bed but there was nothing there. After searching my room, I went out to search the house. I couldn’t scent Angie so I knew she was out. The pungent odour was not present anywhere in the house except my room.“I may be going crazy,” I said to myself as I went back into my room, where I was assailed by the foul odour. It was as if a man who hadn’t taken a bath in a lo
KIAN’S POVFlipping through the report in front of me, I almost laughed. Playing with filthy kids and serving cheap coffee. Was this the life Natalie chose over me? Was this the purpose she was so desperate to find when she insisted on divorcing me? My mate ran off just to settle in a no-name town with old folks and terrible internet. It was amusing, yet it was not.“Uncle, are you Miss Anna’s friend?” “Greg, you can’t – please keep quiet, okay?” Xavier, the father of the little boy in front of me, quickly shielded his son.“What sort of a monster am I?” I looked at the father and son. “Do you think I’d hurt your child?”“No, I just –““That’s enough.” I silenced him.Anna. That was the tacky, bland name she went by now. My mate abandoned her life with me to hide out in a small, nameless town with a bland, unassuming name. The man, Lancer, who had helped her escape, the idiot who chose such a stupid name, had long been apprehended and thrown into the dungeons.I’d given Natalie a ch
