Our wedding night was a disaster.
I had waited and waited for Leo in our 'matrimonial' bedroom, draped in a robe covering the scandalous lingerie my mother had picked up for me.
I sat there, fidgeting the moment he walked in. How was I supposed to seduce a godlike man in such an unattractive body? How was he supposed to even want me when I looked like a sack of potatoes?
Low self esteem you might think but I had to tell myself the truth that this was a futile attempt and there was no point in trying.
"I'm not going to touch you. Don't even think about it cause it's never going to happen." He said, straight to the point.
"I don't want this either," I said as a tear escaped my right eye. I knew he was going to say that so I did not understand why that tear had to betray me.
"Good."
"But-" I tried to say something but of course, he cut me off.
"There's no discussing this Aurora. Let's not force things."
"Good night then," I laid on my side, back turned away from him.
"Night."
Maybe I exaggerated the 'disaster' part, but as far as I know, this was not how wedding nights were supposed to go.

The next morning, I was up early as usual. I looked to my left and saw that Leo was still asleep. He slept on the couch and I felt bad for it. His neck would hurt so much when he woke up.
I headed into the kitchen, determined to impress my in-laws and newly wed husband with my culinary skills.
I saw that their plethora of house staff were already doing cleanups. I went further in as they paused and stared at me.
"Hi good morning," I said to no one in particular.
"Good morning ma'am. Would you like anything? I'd get it done for you."
"I'd like to make breakfast this morning."
"You mean the cook should make you an early breakfast?"
"No. I mean I want to cook."
"Oh um, things don't usually work that way here."
"I insist." I shouldn't have. They let me do it. I made toast, bacon, eggs and tried my hands at their favorite beverages as described by the head housekeeper.
They helped me set up the table and I went back to the bedroom to freshen up.
"Good morning." I said to Leo as soon as I got in and saw him awake.
"Morning." He grunted a response.
I went into the bathroom and did my thing. Then I went downstairs and saw my in-laws ready to sit at the table.
"Good morning dad, mom."
Leo's father responded warmly but his wife was quite the opposite. She did not spare me a glance and barely muttered a response.
I slid into my seat and Leo soon joined us. i watched nervously as they were ready to dig into their meals. It was just then the housekeeper came in to announce that I made the meal, much to their surprise. I wish she had kept shut.
Leo's mother sipped her tea and spat it out out.
"What do you mean she made my breakfast?"
"Uh, well, madam...I" She stuttered and I immediately stepped in.
"Mom it's my fault, I insisted on doing it."
"I'm not your mother. You know who your mother is." She spat bitterly at me and I immediately recoiled.
"I'm sorry." I whispered in remorse as well as embarrassment.
"Don't you ever step into my kitchen. I have a cook for this." She further warned and stormed off while I bit on my lower lip to stop myself from crying.
Leo walked off soon after and I watched him leave without taking as much as a bite.
"I'm off to work dad." He had said and his father nodded as he left, leaving us both at the table.
I watched as he took a bite into the eggs and hummed in delight, "This tastes great. It's their loss, there's more for us."
I laughed amid the tears that were welling up in my eyes. "Thank you sir."
"And you can call me dad, I'm your father now." He said in such a soft tone that I felt warmth on the inside.
"Thank you." I mouthed in gratitude.
"Go on, dig in." He urged me to eat and I managed to take a few bites before feeling full mostly because of my lack of appetite after what went down with his wife.
I watched him clear out his plate, complimenting me in between and it made me feel a lot better.
He soon rushed off to work and I was left alone.
I went up to the room and decided to unpack my stuff and arrange them in the closet. I took my time, setting up every item one after the other with intentionality. I needed it to be so properly arranged that Leo would not find any reason to complain even as I went over to his side of the closet to set it up as well.
When I was done with that, I decided to dabble into sketching a few designs. I don't know about others but keeping my hands busy with drawing or just random sketches could be so relaxing for me.
My mother called while I was in the middle of that. I picked up after hesitating for a few seconds asking myself if I really wanted to talk to her.
"Hello mother,"
"Aurora..." She said my name in her usual indifferent drawl that had a tiny tinge of affection.
"How are you?" I asked.
She yawned, "I'm so tired. How are you and how is my son in-law?"
She talked about him like he was the a new piece of jewelry she wanted to show off.
"We're good." I said, holding back on saying he had hardly said a full sentence to me since we got married.
"I hope his family are nice to you?'' She asked but it sounded like a thrown out statement said out of courtesy and nothing else. It did not matter whether they were nice to me or not, I was after all married.
"Yes they've been lovely." I said anyways.
"Good."
"Mother, did you know that we were going to live with his family?" I don't know why but I felt a need to ask.
"Yes."
I kept quiet, wondering why I would be kept in the dark on that. But then again there was a lot of things I did not know and was only assured of finding out in the most bizarre ways possible.
"Have you been taking care of him the way I taught you?"
"I've been trying." I said. It was just one day in my marriage and she was already asking such.
"Don't try, do it!"
"Yes mother." I said.
I reminisced on all that she had told me to do. I let out breaths of exhaustion at the thought of it. If I had to do all that to please a man, then he should just have me as a personal maid and not his wife.
I was so relieved when the call ended.
"There's the newest husband in town."Rick was at my office the moment I walked in. I grunted at his tease. He was my best man and he never missed out on the opportunity to tease me about my unexpected union. "What are you doing here? You're supposed to be on your honeymoon.""What honeymoon? We both know that's not happening." I let out a disgruntled sigh as I took off my jacket and placed it over my swivel chair."Come on man, I saw her, she's not that bad." He shrugged.I scowled, wondering what he meant by that. "How do you mean?" He shrugged again, "I mean you exaggerated how unattractive she looks. She's actually pretty, she just needs to shed all that weight.""I did not exaggerate anything. She's not my type and that's all there is to it. Don't you have work to get to?" I needed him to get out of my space. I had seen and heard enough of Aurora at home, there was no need for it to continue in the office.Thankfully he got the message and backed off, "I didn't mean to get you
"Hey Riv," I smiled tiredly into the phone, picking up after the third ring. Her smile faded as soon as she saw mine, "Why do you look so worn out?" "I just had so much unpacking to do." I lied."Unpacking? The Aurora I know would do it immediately. It's been days. Or is it the honeymoon?" She wiggled her brows suggestively at the last sentence.I chuckled, "There's no honeymoon." The truth is my mother in-law had given me a never-ending chore to clean up a dusty basement because in her opinion I wanted to busy myself so bad. I could not tell River that."Why not?" "Leo has some things to work on." I said. Leo, the same person I had hardly had a conversation with. She huffed, "I don't think I'm convinced. Is he treating you right?" I was reluctant to answer that. Was he treating me badly? Not exactly, he only was not talking to me, never smiled when I was in the room and sometimes ignored me when I spoke. That's not so bad right? I was being delusional with my thought process.
There was screaming downstairs. My ears perked up at that. I left my sketchbook and immediately stepped out, curious to know what the yells were about. My inquisitiveness made me find my way halfway down the stairs where I saw two slight brunette girls who looked very alike who were hugging my mother in-law. She smiled so widely as she engulfed them in her embrace one more time while I looked on almost longingly. Somehow I wished that she would ever hug me like that or at least smile at me.As I turned to head back up seeing that they were caught in their own bubble, I heard her call out to me. "Aurora?""Ma'am?" I answered. She had sternly instructed me to call her that and who was I to go against it? River asked me if she thought I was one of their employees and I just shrugged."These are Leo's cousins, Leah and Lira." She said, smiling in my direction for the first time."Hi..." I said with a small smile. "You're twins." I stated the obvious. They were so identical."Yes we are."
Leah was actually such a breath of fresh air. She eased me into a fluid and fun conversation. Even when I went quiet, she found a way to bring me back in.We talked until breakfast. I headed back to my room afterwards. But before lunch she was back at my door and we were talking again. I showed her my sketchbook without even realizing it."Your sketches are so pretty. Why haven't you started working on them?" She looked so amazed, you'd think Picasso showed her one of his masterpieces."I don't know..." I shrugged. How was I supposed to tell her that I was not sure if I was allowed to work? It had never been mentioned. No one seemed to be concerned about it and I did not know how to ask."You have a degree in fashion?" She asked me when she saw the photos on my social media page."Yes I do." I nod, picking at the hems of my shirt, wishing for my sewing kit that was all the way upstairs so I could fix it up."So you're free to practice..." It sounded more like a conclusion than a quest
"Dad, you asked for me?" I asked him the moment I got into his office. I was in the middle of an online meeting when he called for me to come up to his home office. "Yes son. I have an event to attend tonight and I'd like for you to represent me." He said. "Sure dad." I shrugged. I did this all the time for him so it was not unusual for him to ask me for such but what he said next threw me off. "You're taking Aurora with you," "What?" I wasn't sure I heard right. "She's always cooped up in the house, she needs to get out a little." "Dad, no." I shook my head. "I wasn't asking." He looked me straight in the eye when he said that. "But-" The words hung in my throat. The plain indignant expression he had on proved to me there was no room for further discussion. I stormed out of his office, banging the door behind me. I walked back to my bedroom. "We have a function to attend." I said when I saw her, straight to the point, clenching my jaw in anger because my father had compelle
I almost thought that the night would never end. Seeing my parents at the event was surprising yet not unexpected. They were social butterflies. I wished I did not attend. I felt so odd and awkward to be standing next to someone like Leo. I wondered if people knew I was his wife and if they did, I wondered what they thought about someone that looked like him marrying someone that looked like me. Speaking to his friend wasn't so bad. At least someone acted like I existed. Rick was funny and bubbly, very unlike his friend who was as cold as ice. It was always a miracle to see Leo crack a smile. He did not even smile at my parents. Oh God, it was so obvious. Why couldn't he just keep up the act like he did before we got married? When he said it was time to leave, I subtly let out a sigh of relief, glad that it was over and I did not have to continue to hide how awkward it felt to be out with him for the first time since our marriage. I found out later that this was his father's idea. In
Headache. I had a searing headache after falling asleep in the most uncomfortable position and since my husband did not come up after the party, there was no one to wake me up to get into a good sleeping position.I managed to get up and clean up the mess I had made, thankful that Leo had not walked in on it. When I got out of the bathroom, I felt refreshed and ready to spend another day cooped indoors having almost nothing to do.I unknowingly dragged my feet around the room, feeling like I had a hungover. "Can you stop that?!"I flinched as I sighted him in the room looking disheveled. "I'm sorry I didn't know when you came in." I said in an apologetic whisper."Of course you didn't." He muttered, looking annoyed."Leo, are you okay?" I asked out of genuine concern. No offense but he looked like he had been hit by a truck."I'm fine." He grunted out, forcing off his jacket."You seem upset.""I said I'm fine!" He yelled."Alright," I backed off, not wanting to argue with him any
I was smiling. Really smiling this time. It was not forced. I even caught myself singing a couple of times as I hurried off to my new favorite place."Hey Axel." I waved at him with child-like excitement as I skidded to a halt.He gave me a slow smile, "Seems like you're in a good mood today," "I guess so." I shrugged, giggling slightly. He could tell there was something on the tip of my tongue."What's the good news, would you like to share?""My friend is coming over today! Leo says she can." I squealed and did a little happy dance.I was so excited to see River. I had not seen her since the wedding because she had traveled out of town for school and now that she was done with college she was going to be in Washington until she got her dream job. I was so happy for her."That's great." Axel said. "Is this friend as beautiful as you?"I sighed dreamily, "River is so beautiful, you can't possibly compare me to her."He frowned, "Why would you say that?" "Well because it's the truth?
