Se connecterISADORA’S POV
I looked down at the silver drive in my hand, then looked back up at Rafael as my mind spinned over everything he had just told me. He did not love Rosaline and obviously he had signed those papers years ago only to keep her safe from my grandfather.
"If you are lying to me, Rafael, I will ruin you myself," I said, with my voice quiet as I put the drive into my coat pocket.
"I am not lying," Rafael said, taking a step back toward the open door. "My mother is going to the Segovia estate right now and if she knows we have her server keys, she would burn the original wills before you can get them."
My heart dropped into my stomach as I saw the server files were good, but we needed the real paper wills my dad had signed before his heart attack.
Those paper wills were the only proof that the estate belonged to me and not to Everett or Rosalind.
"Marco, get your coat," I said immediately, making up my mind right then that we will be going to the estate.
"We are going to the estate now." I said as we left the apartment and went down the stairs to Rafael's car.
Rafael drove fast through the dark, rain-soaked streets while Marco sat in the back with his iron bar.
Nobody spoke a word.
We all knew what would happen if my grandfather's people got to those papers first.
Then twenty minutes later, Rafael pulled the car into the bushes near the back gate of the Segovia estate. The big house was dark, but I could smell the hot smoke in the air the second I stepped out onto the wet grass.
"They are already inside," Marco whispered, holding his iron bar tight in his hand.
"His study room is on the ground floor," I said, pulling my damp coat close around my chest. "Follow me."
Immediately, we crept through the broken back door into the dark hallway. Smoke was coming from the front room, making my eyes water and my throat dry.
We realised that Everett's security guards had set fire to the front hall to destroy the house and trap anything inside.
We ran down the hall and reached the heavy wooden door of my father's old study. The handle was locked tight as Marco stepped up, jammed his iron bar into the door frame, and popped the lock open with a loud snap.
Suddenly the door swung back, and we ran inside.
"Where is the safe?" Rafael asked, looking back toward the smoky hallway.
"Under the desk," I said, dropping to my knees on the cold floor.
I remembered the numbers my father had written down for me. Three to the left and two to the right. Also one to the left.
The lock clicked as I pulled the small iron door open, reached deep inside, and pulled out a thick brown envelope.
"I have them!" I said, standing up and holding the envelope tight against my chest.
Then before Marco could answer, heavy footsteps ran down the hall, and Rosalind walked into the room through the thick smoke as two big guards stood right behind her.
"Give me that envelope, Isadora," Rosalind said, stepping into the room with a cold look in her eyes.
"You are too late," I said, stepping back until my legs hit the wooden desk. "The prosecutor already has the digital files, and I have the real wills."
"I do not care about the files," Rosalind said, taking another step toward me. "Without those signed wills in your hands, you cannot prove anything in court."
"You are not taking them," I said, keeping my voice steady even though my knees were shaking.
Then above our heads, a loud crack echoed through the room as the burning roof began to give way and long red sparks dropped from the ceiling, as the two guards ran back toward the door because they were scared of the fire.
"We have to go now!" Marco yelled, pulling my arm as suddenly, a huge wooden beam snapped above my head and fell straight down toward me.
"Watch out!" Rafael shouted as he jumped forward and threw his whole body over mine, knocking me to the floor. The heavy, burning wood crashed right onto his back with a loud thud as Rafael groaned in pain, his eyes squeezing shut as the heat scorched his coat.
"Rafael!" I screamed, pushing against his chest to try and help him.
"Take... the papers," Rafael gasped, holding the heavy beam off my legs with his elbows. "Go with Marco!"
"I am not leaving you!" I said, grabbing his arms as Marco ran over, stuck his iron bar under the burning beam, and lifted it up just enough for me to pull Rafael out.
Rafael could barely stand, his shoulder raw and bloody, but he put his arm around my neck as we pushed past Rosalind and ran out through the back door into the rain.
We fell onto the wet grass outside, gasping for air as the big house burned bright against the dark sky.
I sat on the lawn, holding the brown envelope safe against my ribs as Rafael lay next to me on his side, breathing slowly, but when he looked at me and saw the papers were safe, a small smile touched his face immediately.
Then, I looked down at the envelope in my hands, knowing we finally had the proof to win.
ISADORA’S POVRafael grabbed my waist on the dark balcony and kissed me until my legs could not hold my weight anymore. We fell asleep holding each other tight, ready to face the war that was coming the next day. When I woke up at six o'clock in the morning, the bright sunlight was coming through the big window, and the room was very quiet.I turned my head to look for Rafael, but his side of the bed was empty, and his shoes were gone from the floor.I sat up on the bed quickly, wrapping the sheet around my body as fear returned to my chest and I stood up and walked toward the bathroom, but the door was wide open, and nobody was inside.I walked over to the small wooden table near the door, and I saw a white paper lying right beside my purse.I picked up the white paper with my shaking hands and read the words written in big black ink.It was a handwritten note from my sister Rosalind.I stepped out of our car outside the big auction house in Marbella. Valentina had invited all the r
ISADORA’S POVRafael stood in front of me with his mouth completely shut, refusing to tell me the truth about the secret contract that gave my sister power over his life.I looked at the small gold ring sitting in my open palm, and the deep pain in my chest turned into hot anger as I stepped toward the big window and threw the ring out into the darkness with all the strength in my right arm. The small gold band vanished into the night, and my heart felt like it was breaking into a thousand small pieces. I turned back to face Rafael, wiping my wet face with the back of my hand so he would not see me cry anymore."You are a coward, Rafael," I said, pointing my finger at his pale face as my legs trembled under my weight.Rafael then took a fast step toward me and grabbed both of my hands in his warm palms. "I am not a coward, Isadora," he said, holding my fingers tight while his eyes filled with tears. "I am keeping quiet because I am trying to save your life and your family from total
ISADORA’S POv"You think that simple gold ring on your finger makes you a real wife, Isadora?" Rosalind spat, as she clapped her hands together with a dry laugh that sent cold fear straight down my spine.I pulled my hand back slowly against my stomach, and my skin felt ice cold while my sister took two heavy steps closer to where I sat."I sold those shares to Valentina because you deserve to lose every single thing you own," Rosalind said, as she pointed her fingers straight at my me while her eyes burned with dark hatred."You have always been weak and stupid, and you think Rafael truly wants you for who you are," she continued, and she looked down at my face with total disgust. My throat closed up tightly, and tears pooled under my eyelids while her cruel words tore through my remaining confidence.I looked up at Rafael because I wanted him to step in and shut her mouth, but he stood completely still beside the bed with his hands clenched into tight fists."Get out of our room rig
ISADORA’S POVMy father Peter stood in the middle of the big room with a wide smile on his face as he held the signed paper high in the air and looked at Rafael and me like he had won a grand prize. Valentina stepped closer to Rafael with her head held up, expecting him to smile and accept the deal she made with my sister."Now we own this estate together, Rafael," Valentina said, taking a step toward him as my stomach turned upside down with fear.Rafael did not look at the paper in my father's hand, and he did not smile at Valentina at all either. He took my hand, stepped forward, and placed himself between Valentina and me."I will never do any business with you, Valentina," Rafael said, looking directly into her eyes as my chest expanded with sudden relief.Valentina stopped moving, and the smile on her face disappeared completely."What are you talking about, Rafael?" she asked, reaching out her hand to touch his arm as my mouth grew dry. "I did this for us so we can control eve
ISADORA’S POVThe text message from Valentina showed a photo of Rafael sleeping in her bed while I was lying alone in his apartment.I dropped his phone onto the mattress because my hands were shaking so much, and I could not breathe properly. My mind was spinning with terrible thoughts as I looked at the dark screen lying on the sheets. I gave him my body and my heart last night, but he still went back to his ex-fiancée the moment I closed my eyes. So much pain cut through my chest so deep that I had to sit on the floor for a few minutes just to hold my knees together.I told myself that I would not stay in his house to cry like a weak person. I stood up immediately, put on my clothes quickly, and grabbed my small bag from the table as I left his apartment without making any noise, and I entered my car to drive down to our family estate in Segovia. The rain was falling heavily from the sky, washing over my front glass as I drove fast on the dark road with my eyes full of tears, but
ISADORA’S POVI opened my eyes at dawn and felt the cold sheet beside me where Rafael was supposed to be sleeping. It all started when I was so angry after Valentina stood on that stage in Madrid and told everyone about the joint takeover of my family estate. Then immediately after the gala night, I drove straight to Rafael’s penthouse apartment without waiting for him to explain anything at the gala. I let myself inside the big door using my old code, and I stood in the middle of his sitting room waiting for him to arrive. When Rafael walked inside the apartment and closed the door, I did not waste any time at all as I confronted him immediately."Give me the private keys to my family estate right now," I said, stepping directly into his path as my hands shook with anger.Rafael pulled off his black suit jacket and threw it onto the couch. "I am not giving you any keys tonight, Isadora," he said, stepping toward me as my breath hitched in my throat."You lied to me again," I said, po
