I groaned when a sudden headache hit me.
I dragged myself up as I struggled to put on my silk robe.
“Sinong—”
The door flew open when Dad and Mom suddenly barged in.
“What the hell are you doing here?” gulat na tanong ko.
I touched my heated cheek and just grinned. “Good morning to you, too, Dad.” It came out very sarcastic.
“Let go of me, Leonor!
“Please… tone down your voice, hon,” pakiusap ni Mommy. “Kausapin mo siya nang maayos.”
Dad just shrugged her off, then looked at me. “You will go back to Iloilo,” mariing utos niya.
My jaw clenched. “Y-You can’t do that…”
But this time… this will be the last. Santiago is filing a case against you! You know Santiago is a big fish we couldn’t afford to have bad blood with.
Of course, he cared so much about reputation—about everything he could gain from connecting with influential people.
“You want coffee?” alok ko.
“Ikaw, ’My? Juice or tea? I have new hibiscus tea from your favorite brand,” pinasigla ko ang boses.
“Ylondra… please, makinig ka naman muna, anak,” she pleaded.
My hand stopped before I could reach the kettle. As if he was the only victim in that party. Biktima rin naman ako. Pero I won’t file a case because… well… I enjoyed him?”
Pareho silang napasinghap.
“Look what Manila did to you!” Sinuri niya ako mula ulo hanggang paa.
But I just shrugged. I stayed away because I wanted to live simply… away from them.
“Here we go again…”
“Rodrigo, please…” si Mommy.
“Bakit? Hindi ba’t totoo naman? She doesn’t honor her own sister!” Dad burst out.
Then, a loud thud of the kettle echoed in my entire unit. Huminga ako nang malalim saka pumikit. “Dad, please. Wala ako sa mood to even talk about this right now,” I dismissed.
“Ynes died because of you! And now, pati dating nobyo niya isinangkot mo pa dahil sa pagiging iresponsable mo. Hindi ka na nahiya kay Santiago! Your sister is dead, so the least you can do is respect her and Santi!” mariing saad ni Daddy.
Putang ina…
It really didn’t matter what that asshole Santiago thinks about me. Pero nang banggitin muli ng ama ko ang namayapa kong kapatid, it felt like reopening an old wound that never fully healed.
“Then fix this—”
“I will,” putol ko. “Kakausapin ko si Santi. And I’ll make sure this won’t even make a dent in your reputable name, Dad,” mariin kong saad.
The only reason he was so mad was because I was dragging Santi into this issue.
Losing Santiago meant losing almost the entire Iloilo region.
He was the Sugar Kingpin, after all.
"I hope that's the last time you ever lay a hand on her, Mr. Alcaraz."Saka lang ako nahimasmasan nang marinig ang boses ni Santiago mula sa pinto. Dahan-dahan kong inangat ang ulo ko.He stood at the doorway, his jaw clenched as he stared directly at my father. "You're still her father, so I've shown you respect." He took one slow step into the room. "But don't make the mistake of thinking that gives you the right to hurt her."Saglit na nanatiling walang imik si Dad bago niya inayos ang pagkakatayo niya. The anger that had consumed his face moments ago slowly faded the moment he faced Santiago.Tumikhim si Dad. "This is a family matter, Santiago."Santiago's expression remained calm. "Then I won't interfere with whatever you need to discuss as a family." But he took another step inside. "But the moment you put your hands on her, it stopped being just a family matter."Nakita ko ang bahagyang pag-igting ng panga ni Daddy. "I… I just lost my temper.""I understand." The calmness in Sa
My head felt heavy, my throat was painfully dry, and there was a dull, aching pain deep in my lower abdomen.Dahan-dahan kong iminulat ang mga mata ko.I saw white ceiling, white walls, and the faint, sterile smell of antiseptic. I instantly knew I was at the hospital kaya bigla akong kinabahan. I turned my head toward it. "My baby..." paos kong bulong."You're awake."Napatigil ako. Her usually neat appearance was slightly disheveled, her face pale and tired as if she hadn't slept.Katabi niya si Dad. Nakatayo ito, his arms crossed over his chest, staring at me with an unreadable expr
"There," the doctor said softly, pointing at the screen. "That tiny flicker right there... that's your baby."And then, a loud, rapid sound echoed inside the room.Napatigil ang paghinga ko. It was fast, strong, and unmistakably alive.Napatingin ako sa monitor.Biglang nanginig ang mga labi ko. All this time, I thought of this pregnancy as a secret I needed to hide, a shield against my family, or a truth that could break me. This was my baby. A warm hand gently wiped them away.Nilingon ko si Santiago. He was staring at the monitor, his dark eyes were also glossy with unshed tears as he looked at the small flickering light."That's your baby's heartbeat, Mr. Vega," the doctor smiled softly. "Everything looks healthy and strong."Santiago swallowed hard as he slowly dropped his gaze to me. "Listen to that
"Where is my sister, Santiago?" tanong ko nang pareho na kaming kalmado. He just sighed like he has no plans to answer my query."Tell me!" I urged."Baby—"Mabilis na umiling ako. "Don't baby me. Kung gusto mong paniwalaan kita, you'll tell me where she is."Santiago took a few heavy breaths. Pinagmasdan niya ako ng ilang saglit. His dark eyes were searching my face as if weighing whether I was ready to handle whatever truth he was holding back."She's safe," he said quietly. "I placed her somewhere Vittorio's men can't easily reach.""Saan, Santiago?" hindi na ko nagpigil. Saan naroroon ang kapatid ko?"He took another step toward me. Hindi ako gumalaw, kahit na ang bawat paglapit niya ay parang nagpapasikip sa buong silid."Cebu,"he revealed, his jaw moved. "She's in Cebu."Halos manlambot ang tuhod ko. Vittorio was right but I want to know…
I didn't even bother looking back.I just needed to get away.Away from his hands. Away from his lips. Away from the way he had whispered my name."Bianca."I pressed my trembling palm against my chest as I walked toward the bed. My heart was beating so violently that it hurt."Fuck." Napapikit ako nang mariin. Why did he have to say my name? Bakit kailangang sa mismong sandaling iyon? Bakit kailangan niyang tawagin akong Bianca?"Bianca."Natigilan ako at dahan-dahan siyang nilingon. He was still wet.A white towel was wrapped around his waist, droplets of water sliding down his broad chest. His dark hair was dripping onto his forehead, but it was the look in his eyes that made my entire body freeze. He looked worried. Not angry. Not frustrated.Worried.His gaze tra
I knew who it was, but I refused to look back and pretended to sleep. I tightly closed my eyes when the warmth of his lips greeted my temple."Sleep more," he whispered before settling down, too. His large, warm hand rested carefully over my waist… very close to my stomach. Subconsciously, my heart skipped a beat. Santi… stay with us… with our baby.Nakinig ako sa ritmo ng paghinga niya sa likod ko.The urge to flip around, grab him by his collar, and scream all my questions at him was so suffocating. Pero bago pa man ak
It was vibrant, perfectly hugging every curve in the right places. I was heading to the elevator when I
She made a face as she glanced at me, her eyes lingering for a second too long before she slid a simple white envelope across the table.Mas lalong nagliwanag ang ekspresyon ko. Hindi ko na napigilan ang sarili ko. “Go
“For the nth time, I refuse your request.”Tumikhim ang kaharap kong sekretarya at saka umupo nang maayos. “End of quote. Even his secreta
