Chapter 59: Talon

last update publish date: 2026-05-27 22:28:40

“You’re alright,” a magnificent voice above me says. For a second, I let it make me feel safe.

I smile, resting, or at least trying to. I haven't rested since it all went wrong

“Talk to me again,” I beg croakily. I croon towards the voice, but I'm firmly pushed back into satin sheets, the sort of sheets that only exist in my parents' house.

Because that’s where I am… home.

“Shhhh. Don’t waste too much energy. You collapsed from hunger,” the voice says again. Not just any voice—

“Olivia.” I

Olivia turns ashen. “W-what is he talking about?” she stutters, keeping those big, brown eyes on me, silently asking me to explain something different to her. Something different from the truth. Oh shit. Not now. Not ever. Axel lets out a bitter laugh, and I’ve never wanted to punch him more. “What?” he asks Olivia. “You think they’ve always had pure intentions for you, human? You think I’m uniquely evil because of what I’ve done? The only reason Ryker even talks to you now is because he wanted to get in your pants.” “It’s not true!” Olivia says fiercely, but her clammy skin tells me a part of her believes it just might be. She snaps her head at Ryker. “Tell me it’s not true.” He was already pale because of the John thing, but now he looks whiter than a ghost. He steps toward her, mumbling. “It was a long time ago. I was—” Her hands fly to her mouth, not giving him a chance to explain, and she thrusts away, chest heaving. I can’t move. I feel like I’m watching something perfec

“They’re back!” Talon yells, standing at attention. Axel hurdles over the barrier, and I don’t know if he jumps wrong or the exhaustion from what just happened to him catches up, but he falls. Rather than taking me down with him, he expertly flips on his back, holding me to his body. Our chests heave, and I can feel his heartbeat on mine. Too fast. Too broken. But blessedly there. The others crowd us, asking in a messy chorus if we’re okay and what happened. Finally, after what feels like forever, Axel breaks his silence with four bone-chilling words. “Olivia. Get off me.” I scramble to my feet, my heart pounding as I immediately begin reasoning with him. “I never meant to hurt you,” I beg, trying to get through to the version of him I’ve known these last few days. The one who just saved me despite himself, “I never asked for any of this.” Axel springs to his feet, his eyes livid. “And I asked for this? To die and be brought back to life as your fucking servant? I’m alive

It’s easy to forget just how terrifying Axel is when you’re on his good side. But now he’s looking at me with a level of betrayal that has me backing away, crunching gravel beneath my boots as I take step after step back. “You were going to kill me?” he mumbles, quietly, as if he’s still processing it. I shake my head, so scared that my words fail me. Axel stops, eyeing me like he did the day he met me: enraged. Bitter. A man deciding if his prey is worth the effort to destroy. “All this time you’ve had the power to end my life? All this time you’ve known?” “Axel, please—” He yanks me forward, cutting me off. Everest roars something, something I don’t bother straining to hear. He has no idea what he’s done, how easily Axel could snap my neck and get this over with. “My father warned me,” Axel continues lowly. “He said I had to pick between you or me, but I didn’t listen.” I try to match his gaze, but it’s hard through my beating heart. “You think I was going to kil

  • Bite   Chapter 91: Axel

My sister is dead. My sister died the same day my mum died. The same day my house burnt down. The same day… The same day she was kidnapped, but I never actually saw her get murdered. I couldn’t forget those eyes if I wanted to. They’re still the same almond shape. The same exact silver-grey as mine. “Hello, brother,” she says again, and she sounds just like I thought she would: soft and strong all at the same time. I can’t move. Can’t speak. Can’t let go of Olivia. But if I do… if I give her to Nester now, I could take my sister home. “I bet you have questions,” Everest says. “The day your house burnt down, the humans working for Nester had another goal: To take babies of families already destroyed by the war and bring them to him.” Everest puts a hand on my sister, and I almost scream at him to let her go. But I see his fingers are directly over her mark, drawing my attention to it. “Nester raised little Alex alongside many other babies who survived the war. People

For a horrible second, I think Axel is going to say yes. Everest planned this: He knew the boys would come. He wanted to get the three of us alone so Axel could trade me away. But Axel barks, “You must be out of your fucking mind if you think I’m handing her to you.” “Just a month ago that was your dying wish, wasn’t it?” Everest slides his gaze between the both of us. “Or has she finally gotten to you too?” Axel pulls me to his side, touch burning, and growls, “Fuck. Off.” “Huh,” Everest noises. He looks between the both of us again, and I can’t help but be a little anxious. I feel like he’s putting something together. Placing puzzle pieces I’m terrified for him to place. “I’m curious, Axel,” Everest starts again. “When did you become magic?” I tense, but if Axel is nervous, he doesn’t show it. “I don’t see how it’s your business,” he retorts. “Nester wants all the magic he can get. Consider this your interview.” “Tell Nester Rist he can fuck himself. He’s not getting me an

Any amusement we feel stops the second we reach Penbrook. The air is thin here, or maybe it’s just me struggling to puff in oxygen. There’s a jagged border of rocks separating this part of things from the rest of the town. Once we cross it, there’s no going back.I gulp as I say, “You guys should stay here.” Hunter scoffs, throwing the jeep in park. “Stay here my ass. We’re going in with you.” “But that wasn’t-““Part of the deal?” Hunter casts me a look. “Yeah, Livvy. Deals change.”“Everest could kill you guys.” Ryker throws his seatbelt off, already opening his side of the door. “I’d like to see him try.”I sigh as Hunter follows him, and Talon, more hesitant, steps out too. It’s only Axel who hasn’t moved, looking at the rubble that was once his home. His throat bobs on a way that rips my heart in half. I’m tempted to put a hand on his shoulder, but I doubt I can be of much comfort to him now.“Axel.” I say quietly. He turns to me, grey eyes intense.I gulp. “I’m sorry… for ev
