Chapter 4

Author: Maltose
Denise panicked.

As she was being escorted out of the premises, she still pointed her finger at me and screamed insults more colorful than the rainbow.

"Just you wait and see, Aiken Collins! I'm never going to agree to the divorce! I'm going to utterly destroy you!"

Finally, the company lobby was quiet once more.

I turned around and lowered my head apologetically at Paul.

"I'm very sorry, Mr. Wellington, for causing trouble for the company."

However, Paul just patted me on the shoulder and said, "Welcome back to the team, Aiken."

Over the next few days, Denise still tried to call me time and time again.

She lowered herself and begged me to come home. Meanwhile, Nancy was also crying on the other end of the line as she called out to me.

However, I know that they were lying. Their so-called repentance was nothing more than another trick to make me go back as their cash cow once again.

I ignored all of their calls.

One day, however, someone suddenly broke down the door of my rented apartment with a kick.

Dmitri showed up with a baseball bat in his hand as he strode into the place. Denise was right behind him, looking as angry and indignant as ever.

"Did you think you could hide, Aiken?"

Dmitri then smashed the only broken table with his baseball bat and cursed. "If you don't want to die today, then you'd better pay off the loan now, do you hear me?"

He didn't even bother looking straight into my eye as he spoke arrogantly. In his eyes, I was still the soft-spoken, useless piece of trash who would never fight back.

When Denise saw that I didn't say anything in return, she looked at me with a faux-pitiful expression and said, "Aiken, we've discussed this before.

"If you'll just drop to your knees and beg us for mercy and forgiveness, and pay off all of the outstanding repayments, we'll forget about the past and even let you come home to continue serving us."

I laughed coldly and remained seated by my bed without moving. I gripped the penknife I used for sharpening my pencils as I stared at them with an eerily calm gaze.

"Get out."

Dmitri was shocked. Then, he burst into laughter.

"Did you hear that, Denise? This piece of trash just told me to get lost!

"It seems like he's going to need some convincing instead!"

Dmitri raised the bat in the air, crashing it down toward my head.

"I'm going to break both your legs today! I wonder how long you can hold on."

If this had been in the past, I would have put up with the hit for the sake of keeping peace in the family.

But now, I had had enough.

I ducked sideways and kicked Dmitri right in the stomach. Before he could come back to his senses, I grabbed a handful of his hair and pinned him right on the ground.

Then, I unsheathed the penknife and pressed the blade against his pulsing jugular vein.

"Try moving if you dare," I said.

Dmitri was so scared he nearly peed his pants.

Denise screamed and rushed up to us, trying to pull me off.

"Aiken! If you dare to lay a finger on Dimi, I'm never going to forgive you!"

I chuckled coldly. "Scared now?

"Since you're all here, let's make things clear."

I stared at Denise and spoke slowly and clearly. "The 10,000 dollars from Dad's kidney sale, and all of the 80,000 dollars of my savings I'd transferred to you over the past few years—those were what paid for the down payment of Dmitri's two mansions.

"Since they're joint assets, I have the right to demand back every single penny of it.

"You have three days. You will either pay me back all the money you owe me, or you will sell the mansions and pay me back instead.

"Or else, I will see you both in court."

With that, I released Dmitri, who had turned into a pile of mush in my hands.

He held a hand to his neck and scrambled out of the door on his knees, leaving Denise behind as she gritted her teeth in anger.

"Just you wait, Aiken! You want the money back? In your dreams!"

I watched as both of them stumbled out of my apartment in a disheveled state. Then, I called up my lawyer.

"Mr. Lagerfeld, apply for property preservation immediately."

There was a long silence on the phone.

Finally, Samson Lagerfeld spoke.

"It's too late, Mr. Collins.

"Just half an hour ago, your wife mortgaged both the mansions to a loan shark company at a very low price for five million dollars in cash. The whereabouts of this money is currently unknown…

"Also, she just countersued you for domestic abuse, providing the police with doctored footage of you attacking her with a knife. The police are already on their way."

Before I could even grasp what was happening, I could hear loud police sirens stopping right outside my building.

"Do you think it would be convenient for you to come over?" the welfare home asked.I stayed silent for a long while. Ultimately, I agreed to go.I saw Nancy in the waiting room at the welfare home. She was a lot skinnier than before, and she was wearing clothes that didn't fit her. Her hair was also coarse and scraggly, and there was fear in her eyes. She was no longer the spoiled princess she once used to be.When she caught sight of me, she burst into tears and ran toward me, wanting to hug my legs. I instinctively took a step back, and she ended up grabbing air instead, freezing on the spot.Tears began streaming down her face even more."Daddy, I'm sorry… Please don't abandon me… Daddy, won't you please bring me home?"I'll be very good. I won't scold you or yell at you anymore. I'll listen to everything you say…"She wouldn't stop sobbing the entire time.I looked at her, a mix of emotions rising in my heart. She used to be someone I held so preciously in the palm of m

"Or do you mean flaunting Dmitri's mansions bought with my hard-earned money on your social media accounts, Denise?" I asked."Stop it with that cheap acting of yours, Denise Sheridan."The police arrived just then and rushed into the house, taking control of the situation at once. This time, the cold handcuffs were snapped onto each of the Sheridans' wrists instead.Dmitri was still trying to fight back."Let me go! How dare you arrest me? I didn't break any laws!"Larry, who had kept quiet throughout the entire ordeal, finally spoke, cursing out loud."You ingrate! We were the ones who fed you and took care of you, and you dare to bite the hands that fed you?"You will suffer a horrible death!"I watched expressionlessly as the four of them were led into the police cars. Finally, this ten-year-long nightmare was coming to an end.I turned around and saw Nancy hiding behind the door, shivering in fright. She no longer looked harsh or haughty like she used to in the past. I grabbed Dmitri by his collar and threw him to the ground."Trying to make a run for it? Can you even run?"Denise completely lost her mind when she saw this. She pounced on me like a madwoman and began clawing at my face and biting my arms."Aiken Collins! Let go of my brother! I'm going to kill you!"I slapped her hard on her cheek. The entire household suddenly turned deathly silent.Denise held a hand to her cheek, staring at me in disbelief. After all, I had never once laid a finger on her in the past 12 years of our relationship."This slap is for my dad."I then grabbed her by her hair and pressed her face into the pile of cash on the table."Take a deep breath. What do you smell?"It smells of the blood that was shed when my dad was tricked into selling his kidney!"It smells of the rotting flesh when I fell, broke my leg, and got impaled in the bones of my thigh!"It also smells of the disinfectant used when you used your daughter as your money-making machine over

Did Denise and Dmitri really think that they were safe once they'd run away with the money?I wasn't just going to make them pack back every cent they owed me.I was also going to make them face the consequences—a tooth for a tooth, and an eye for an eye.My phone vibrated with a new text message from Paul. He had sent me a photo of a drug test report. The report said that the "specialized drug" meant to cure Nancy's leukemia was actually just made up of glucose and vitamin C, costing less than ten bucks for a bottle of it.Denise had lied to me that the drug cost 10,000 dollars per dose.I gripped my phone tightly until my knuckles went white as resentment surged in my mind, nearly overthrowing my rationale.Ten years. The lie lasted ten whole years.I had worked myself to the bone, and Dad had sold his kidney and exchanged his life for nothing but a massive lie in the end.Nancy was not even sick to begin with!…I rushed out of the company and drove all the way back to D

Denise exclaimed, "That's not it! I just… My hand just slipped!"She wouldn't stop defending herself, but Samson didn't even bother looking at her. Instead, he approached me right away and said, "Mr. Collins, everything's settled now."He handed me a phone."This is the full surveillance video retrieved from the corridor of your apartment, and I've already handed it to the police."I tapped on the video, and it clearly showed how Dmitri had kicked down my door, swung the baseball bat at my head, and how I fought back and defended myself. The truth was out in the open, and the door to the interrogation room was opened once again. The young police officer from before stepped in and uncuffed me."Mr. Collins, you may leave now. According to the new evidence, Dmitri Sheridan is found guilty of illegal trespassing and breaking in, and attempted assault and battery."We have already summoned him to the station."…I walked out of the police station with the sun in my eyes.Paul's c

The officers snapped the cold cuffs around my wrists. The interrogation room was bright and almost blinding."Name.""Aiken Collins.""Do you know why you're here?""Yes. Family disputes."I answered the officer's questions very calmly. Meanwhile, the young officer seated opposite me frowned instead. He couldn't understand why I was so calm about the matter."Someone accused you of wielding a knife and threatening others, and of domestic abuse against your wife and daughter."We have video proof."The officer then began playing a video on the iPad he slid toward me. The screen showed me holding the penknife against Dmitri's neck on the ground.Denise's screams in the background were also very perfectly edited into the video. The video made me look like a fierce, terrible, and frightening beast."The video's been doctored," I said calmly. "Dmitri first attacked me with a baseball bat. I was only defending myself.""Do you have any proof of that?""You can find the surveil
