EVERETT

AGE 11

I dropped my schoolbag onto the sofa and hurried toward the kitchen, leaving my shoes scattered across the floor. However, the moment I stepped inside, I froze. My mother was lying on the floor, a small amount of white powder clinging to her hand and the area beneath her nose. For a moment, I couldn't move. Then I screamed and rushed to her side, wrapping my arms around her pale body and begging her to wake up. White foam spilled from her mouth, and her body twitched uncontrollably, but her eyes remained closed. She had been fine when I'd left for school that morning, so what had happened?

"Mommy, LOOK AT ME, PLEASE!"

I shook her gently, tears streaming down my face, but she didn't respond. Terrified, I ran outside, desperately searching for someone who could help. My father was drunk again, and I knew he wouldn't help her. I screamed until a man finally approached me and asked what was wrong. Through my tears, I explained that my mother wouldn't open her eyes. He dropped his grocery bags and hurried inside with me. By then, several neighbors had gathered, whispering about my mother's addiction and expressing pity for me. Their words barely registered. All I wanted was for someone to save her.

The man knelt beside my mother and checked on her before slowly turning toward me. I didn't need him to speak. The answer was already written across his face.

"I'm sorry, kiddo."

"No!" I stumbled backward, refusing to believe him. My mother couldn't be dead. She couldn't leave me alone in a world where my father barely cared about anything beyond alcohol. I slid down the wall and cried until my chest ached, unable to accept that the woman who had loved me was never going to open her eyes again.

PRESENT DAY

I jolted awake, sweat covering my body. For days, memories of my mother's death had been returning without warning, dragging me back into a past I'd spent years trying to forget. Sometimes, I could almost hear her sweet voice singing to me. Other times, all I remembered was the kitchen floor and the moment a stranger told me she was gone.

I sat on the edge of my bed, pressing my palms against my face as I tried to steady my breathing. I was no longer the helpless eleven-year-old girl who had watched her world fall apart. I was twenty now, with a job, responsibilities, and a life I was desperately trying to hold together. I couldn't afford to remain trapped in the past forever.

After getting ready for work, I grabbed my bag and headed downstairs. My father was slumped over the kitchen table, fast asleep, with an empty beer bottle hanging loosely from his hand. He had been drinking for half his life, but his addiction had worsened after my mother's death. He refused to hold down a job, and whenever he managed to find one, he either quit or got fired. I had learned to stretch our money, buy groceries, and take care of responsibilities that should never have belonged to me.

I took the bottle from his hand and threw it into the trash before heading toward the door.

"Where are you going, kiddo?" he mumbled.

"Work, Dad."

"Come back early. We have to talk about something serious."

I paused, wondering what trouble he'd gotten himself into this time, but I didn't question him. Instead, I left the house and headed to Brindlewick, hoping whatever he wanted to discuss could wait until later.

Considering my difficult background, I considered myself lucky to have secured an internship at such a prestigious company. The job paid well enough to help me cover our household expenses, and whenever I had money left over, I used it to renovate my mother's old house. It wasn't much, but it was my way of keeping her memory alive.

Unfortunately, I was always late for work. Between taking care of my father and managing everything at home, my mornings rarely went according to plan. Still, I knew I couldn't afford to lose this opportunity.

When I arrived at the company, I hurried toward the elevator, my hundred-dollar heels clicking against the immaculate marble floor. Thankfully, my boss hadn't arrived yet, giving me a few precious minutes to settle at my desk.

I had barely opened my notebook when a colleague approached me.

"Ms. Hale, Mr. Kessler would like to see you in his office."

My stomach sank. Sebastian Kessler never summoned me unless he wanted something done, and his requests rarely involved anything beyond making his coffee.

I inhaled deeply and headed toward his office, trying to calm my nerves. The enormous black doors opened into a room as intimidating as the man who occupied it. Sebastian sat behind his desk in a black Tom Ford suit, complete with silver cufflinks, a black dress shirt, and a matching tie. Everything about him screamed wealth, power, and authority. There was something dark and unsettling about him that made me want to turn around and run.

He didn't look up when I entered.

"Good morning, sir. I heard you requested my presence."

He continued working for several seconds before finally speaking.

"You are late for work, Ms. Hale. Again."

My stomach tightened as he reprimanded me for my repeated lateness. He made it clear that he didn't care about my personal circumstances and expected me to arrive on time regardless of what happened outside the office. When I explained that I'd needed to take care of my father, he dismissed my explanation without the slightest sympathy.

"I don't care whether you have to take care of a cat, a dog, a parent, or a dying man on the street. I expect you to be at work on time. Even someone with two ears should be able to understand me."

His words stung, but I swallowed my response. I wanted to explain that I wasn't late because I didn't care about my job. I was simply trying to manage a life that never seemed to get easier. However, I knew arguing would only make things worse.

Sebastian finally lifted his gaze from the computer.

"Make me tea. Black. Two spoons of sugar. It should be hot."

That was why he'd summoned me. Not to discuss my performance or hear my explanation, but to remind me of my place.

"Yes, sir."

I hurried out of his office and allowed myself to breathe only when I was safely outside. As I returned to my desk, I glanced at the notebook containing my unfinished tasks. Frustration replaced some of my fear. I had worked too hard to get here, and I wasn't going to let one arrogant man convince me that I didn't belong.

I picked up my notebook and headed to the kitchen to make his tea. I might have been afraid of Sebastian Kessler, but I wasn't giving up my future just because he made my life difficult.

Not today.

  • Bound To The Ruthless CEO    I have to get away from him.

Everett Tears streamed down my cheeks, I don't remember arriving at home but Dante told me so once he dropped me off. Father wasn't drunk when I got home, I ran to him and cried. Just like when I was a baby he snuggled me he didn't ask me any questions he just let me cry my eyes out till there were no tears no more. Now I curled myself in bed with thoughts of being cheated on crawling into my head, or maybe I was just the other woman in the marriage. He probably married me for image and more power. Commotion came from downstairs, loud men voices and shouting. I quickly ran downstairs finding Noah pointing a gun at my father while Sebastian remained quiet and calculated. What kind of family did I get married to? “I told you she's not here.” My father's shaky voice came through. “Old man, if you do not take her out right now I'll blow your brains out. She belongs to our family now and you agreed to that so stop being a bitch a bring her.” “Making her cry and breaking her heart in

  • Bound To The Ruthless CEO    I can't love her

SebastianShe was wearing a red dress. Luna always wore red. I almost lost myself because of that damn colour, because of how her blue eyes used to shine whenever she looked at me. For a moment, I had imagined wrapping her blonde hair around my fists and pulling her closer, forgetting everything else. That was until she ruined the moment by asking about Luna. One question was all it took to bring back memories I had spent years trying to bury.My problems seemed to be increasing this month. It had been months since I had been with a woman, and Amber was beginning to piss me off. I had never promised to marry her, yet she had taken the role of becoming my submissive very seriously. She had convinced herself that whatever we shared meant something more, and now her ridiculous expectations were creating problems for me and my new marriage. I had warned her countless times that I wasn't interested in anything serious, but she refused to listen. Amber was becoming a headache I didn't need,

  • Bound To The Ruthless CEO    Jealous wife? I'm not

EverettI tossed and turned throughout the night. Although the house felt like home and so did the room, I missed the squeaky sound my old bed made whenever I moved. I missed waking up and wondering what problem my father had caused this time. Now, I woke up to a beautifully scented room that was bigger than my entire childhood home. Everything was different, and I wasn't sure whether I liked it or not. Nevertheless, I woke up determined that today was going to be a better day. It had to be better than yesterday. My wardrobe was filled with clothes I didn't remember owning. Some were grey, others black. Such a horrible taste in colours, but a red dress caught my eye, so I decided to wear it to work. I waited for Sebastian to leave first because I knew he was going to make a fuss about me going to work and disobeying his orders. I had worked hard for that job, and besides, how was I going to survive once this marriage was over? I wasn't going to depend on a man who thought money gave h

EverettHis bedroom lacked life. It was just hollow, with everything decorated in black and grey. Even his bedsheets were black, while the walls were painted in different shades of grey. Despite its cold appearance, it was a beautiful and enormous bedroom. It had an adjoining bathroom and a walk-in closet that was probably bigger than our entire house. Everything looked expensive, perfectly arranged and unnecessarily organised. It suited him perfectly, a man who seemed to have no room for warmth or unnecessary emotions."Your side is the left," Sebastian said from behind me, already unbuttoning his shirt. "And take off that dress. My staff will burn it."My eyes went over my mother's wedding dress. It was a little dirty now, but I wasn't going to allow him to do that. "No," I said, making him stop whatever he was doing."No? I wasn't asking you a question. The wedding is over, and you can get rid of that ugly dress." My stomach tightened. How could someone be so insensitive?"I said n

EverettWe both walked out of the church hall hand in hand, even though neither of us wanted to. His father had insisted that we keep up appearances for the family's sake. Sebastian's rough hand held mine firmly as we made our way outside. People had gathered near the entrance, and all their attention shifted to us the moment we stepped out. Cameras flashed, and a few guests congratulated us as though they had witnessed a love story rather than a marriage neither of us had chosen."We're leaving," Sebastian announced, pulling me towards the black SUV."I'll see you soon, sister-in-law!" Noah shouted behind us, clearly enjoying the situation.I pulled my hand away from Sebastian's. "I want to say goodbye to my father."He turned to look at me, his expression unreadable, but I didn't wait for his permission. I hurried towards my father and wrapped my arms around him. Tears slipped down my cheeks as I buried my face against his chest. Whatever mistakes he had made, he was still my father

  • Bound To The Ruthless CEO    I'm Mrs Kessler now

EVERETTMy hands were shaking, and tears threatened to spill from my eyes. Time seemed to have stopped around us. Silence filled the church hall as everyone waited for one of us to speak, while I stood in my white wedding dress feeling like a fool."Father, deal with this."Sebastian's calm voice cut through the silence. His right eye kept twitching, the only sign that the interruption had unsettled him. Amber stood several feet away, surrounded by men dressed in black. She looked furious, but there was something desperate in her expression too."No, Mr. Kessler. You can't do that. You know what I'm telling you is the truth. Sebastian belongs to me."She spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear. My ears rang, and I struggled to understand how my wedding had turned into this.Sebastian couldn't give me what I wanted, and I couldn't give him what he wanted either."Is this true? Are you married?" I finally managed to ask.His attention shifted toward me. His grey eyes softened for a bri
