“Lucas? He doesn't even know about my father's sickness.” She murmured.
She thought of the tension living with the both brothers under the same roof; it felt like walking on thin ice.
“Urrgh!”
She sat up from her bed looking at the moon from the slightly drawn curtain.
“Who would have sent the donor?” She bit her lips.“Why hide it?”
Her mind traveled back during dinner and Lucas's smile, he might have done something.
She hated how much she wanted to ask Lucas directly, yet feared the answer. If he did it…was it goodwill or some kind of game?
“But how?” Her eyes narrowed.
The next morning, Ethan had already left for work. When Ava came downstairs she wasn't surprised at all; he wore business and punctuality like a second skin.
But Lucas the Hale's family black sheep sat bothered on the couch sipping coffee.
His eyes lifted towards Ava's direction he smiled.
“Morning darl.” He teased her.
She ignored him, moving towards the kitchen direction.
“I guess Ethan left early.” He followed her into the kitchen. “He's always hated sharing breakfast with people.”
She didn't respond, she felt he wasn't worthy of a reaction.
She grabbed a glass of water and walked out. Lucas stood there impressed on how much Ava has changed in years.
Lucas pulled out his phone and tapped on it as Ava was walking out.
“Yeah…make sure it's done by tonight. No mistake.” He said, his voice low and sharp.
Ava stopped mid-step, her heart beating as she leaned against the kitchen.
Her pulse quickened.
“Got it. No delays.” Lucas continued. He hung up and smiled to himself. Unaware Ava had been eavesdropping.
“Ready by tonight?” She muttered.
Lucas noticed her stares. “What?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Nothing,” she said quietly and hurried out of the kitchen.
Later that morning, at the company Ethan sat in his office with a heavy mind looking at the photo of him and Ava leaving the Mansion together. He had gotten it printed out and was studying it when Lucas barged in.
“Do you really enjoy crossing people's boundaries?” Ethan said coldly, he didn't bother looking up.
Lucas shut the door behind him. “It depends on whose boundaries I am crossing.”
Ethan finally raised his face. “You did it, didn't you? the boardroom photo?”
“I'm flattered you think I have time for such things.”
“Drop the damn act!” Ethan snarled. “You are the only one who stands to gain from humiliating me in front of the board members.”
Lucas smirked. “Gain? I have better ways to ruin you brother. The board isn't part of my plan.”
He clenched his fist, restraining himself from hitting Lucas. He stepped closer.
“The donor Lucas…that was you.”
Lucas tilted his head backward laughing, clapping his hands like a wild goose.
“Why? Why did you do it?” Ethan demanded.
“Because her father was dying, Ethan!” Lucas replied. “I traced you both to the hospital.”
Fury flashed in Ethan's face.
He fought hard to keep a clear expression.
“You followed me?” He asked this time with a calm and reserving voice.
“Tsk…not you.” He shrugged. “Her…”
“You are playing dirty, Lucas. Do not involve her.”
Lucas grinned, slow and poisonous.
“You should stop playing nice then, because I'm not planning on stopping.” He said and finally left.
Ethan said nothing, he stood there staring into nothingness. He hated the fact, Lucas had done the right first.
He has been defeated by his brother and they weren't even halfway through this battle.
Meanwhile, at the mansion Helen had begun her early morning cleaning routine.
She noticed at the far end of the shelf a loose panel of the lower shelf.
She bent down and pulled it
She found an old wooden box. Ancient and heavy.
A single letter ‘H’ was carved on it.
She frowned. “What's this?”
She lifted the lid of the box and it creaked making a sound of something that hadn't been touched in decades.
Inside it she found photographs of the Hale family. Ethan's baby photo and that of Lucas and their parents as well.
“Aww…” she moaned.
The last photo was at the bottom of the box, a picture of a woman dressed in a pale white gown. Her smile was bright and haunting; like she knew a secret the household had forgotten.
She flipped the back of the photo. An inscription was at the back of it.
“believed to be dead…Clarissa Hale.” She read it out loud.
The name wasn't familiar to her.
“She looks like one of the brothers.” She said, She didn't seem to figure it out.
Before she could put back the photo, a phone rang.
She answered quickly. “Yes, Mr Ethan?”
“Helen, I need you to restock the pantry and some groceries. Use my card.” Ethan's voice came through the phone. Cold and commanding.
“Of course sir.”
“I will send you a list, make sure not to miss a single thing.” He added.
The call ended. Helen's gaze still on the box wondering who ‘Clarissa Hale’ is and what made her to be dead.
“Clarissa Hale.” She whispered but t
he name didn't seem to be ringing any bell in her head.
She slid back the photo into the box, closed it tightly and took it with her.
THE COST OF DEPENDING Ava stood still even after the woman disappeared. Her breathing was uneven and her fingers were shaking from uncertainty. The voice and the warning still repeated in her head.Ava swallowed hard. “He must never know I’m here… and you may be their next target.”Those words kept repeating in her head. Her hands went weak. She leaned against the wall, pressing her palm over her racing heart as she forced herself back into the penthouse, shutting the door with trembling fingers.“What just happened?” she whispered. She searched for her phone and scrolled through it. Notifications flooded her screen thousands of them.Dozens of comments. Her video defending Ethan was everywhere.THE EMPLOYEE SPEAKS… CAN WE BELIEVE HER?HOW TRUE IS THIS? HOW DOES SHE KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT ETHAN HALE?She scrolled again, heart pounding loudly and her hands shaking uncontrollably.LIAR.IMPOSSIBLE.HOW MUCH DID HE PAY HER?Her chest tightened. She dropped the phone on the table like i
Ava barely slept. Her mind kept replaying the previous day's event. The shock in her eyes when she saw the news online. Then she thought, what if Susan had orchestrated the humiliation? What if she had struck Ethan's unexpectedly, when he least expected it?All these thoughts raced through her mind, but she suddenly fell asleep. The morning sun slid through the curtains. Ava rubbed her eyes and pushed herself off the bed. Ethan was already awake, standing by the window in a wrinkled shirt. Facially he looked tired; from everything that had happened. “Morning,” Ava said softly. He didn't really respond, he just muttered a response. Her chest tightened. “Ethan…”“I’m fine.” He lied, voice too quiet, he didn't let her finish her sentence. She wanted to argue, to tell him she could help him fight, but he looked very distant.Like he wasn't ready or willing to say anything. He finally turned toward her, exhaustion clinging to his features. He lifted a hand toward her face, then lowe
Ethan left Lucas's condo and drove back to his penthouse. He stepped into his penthouse looking like someone who was at the verge of losing a battle. His tie was roughly undone and his hair scattered.Ava rushed to him immediately as he came fully into the room.“Ethan.” She whispered. He didn't speak. He just walked towards the couch and collapsed on it.He exhaled, a long breath that explained how tired he had been. His hands were still shaking, from the rage he barely contained at Lucas's condo.“I just need to get some rest.” He said. “Ethan…” She called him. “You'll be fine, okay?”She felt he needed to hear those words at that moment.“Thank you.” He murmured and walked to his room.THE NEXT MORNING Across the city, Susan Hale sat exquisitely in a five star restaurant, she wore a black blazer, hair styled to perfection. She was looking too elegant for a woman of her age.She dialed a number on her phone.A male voice answered from the other end. “Mrs. Hale.”“It's time,” she
Ethan didn't wait for her to finish her sentence. The moment she mentioned his stepmother, he took his car keys and stormed out of his office. He immediately drove to the Hale Mansion at a dangerous speed.THE HALE MANSIONSusan sat prestigiously in the dim lounge with a glass of wine. She wasn't surprised at all when Ethan came in furiously.“So,” she said, swirling her drink. “You finally came home to Mama.”“Do not play with her,” Ethan growled, referring to Ava.Susan's eyebrow lifted, amused. “Your secretary, Ava Sinclair? Gentle girl, isn't she? But she's just at the wrong place and at the wrong time.”She stood and approached him, her heels clicking on the floor.“She's a pawn in a dangerous game of ambition and power, Ethan. She'll get hurt, she'll cry, she'll take the fall…” she paused and tapped his shoulders lightly. “And you'll break alongside her.”Ethan's expression hardened. “If you want a fight, take it with me. Leave her out of it.”“Tsk… that's too late,” she said.
Ava’s gaze lingered on the kitchen door, as Ethan left Lucas’s condo. Her expression was unreadable, Ethan had come looking for her but she still let him leave without her. It felt like a knife driving through her heart. And of all people, she had chosen to stay with Lucas.AT ETHAN’S PENTHOUSEHe slammed the door hard once he entered, he tossed his jacket across the couch and pulled his phone immediately. He dialed her number again. She answered.“Hello…” her voice was barely calm. There was a good amount of silence that stretched between the both of them.“Ava,’ Ethan finally spoke. “Can you please come back to work at least?”She didn’t say anything. The image of her sitting somewhere, knees knocked, shrinking into themselves, lingered in his mind.“Ava?” He called her again.“...Fine.” She agreed. “I’ll resume tomorrow.”He shut his eyes, relieve washing over him like a tide.“Thank you,” he murmured. “Just… come back.”AT THE COMPANYThe next morning at the Halenito company, Ava
The city lights blurred into long streaks. Ava walked through the pedestrian lane and the thoughts of what Miranda had said still stuck to her head. She didn't pay attention to where she was going. All she knew was that she needed to go far from everything and everybody.Far away from Miranda's apartment. Far away from Ethan, she just needed to think.Ava wrapped her arms around her body like she was cold. Her breathing was unsteady, her vision blurred and the noises around her grew distant.Ava swayed, the world slipping out of her eyes, the street lights turned into streaks of golden color. Her knees buckled, finding it difficult to hold her balance, until strong, firm arms caught her.Not Ethan.“Ava.” Lucas called her.His voice sounded distant and muffled, like she was under water.Lucas's voice had a sense of panic in it. It echoed in Ava's ears. As she drifted in and out of consciousness, she didn't know that Lucas was carrying her AT LUCAS'S CONDOShe woke up on soft sheets
