Chapter- 5

Averine

Coiled in the corner of the car, almost pasted to the window, I kept staring out of the window, staring blankly at the passing clusters of trees, hills and also towns. I didn’t know how many hours had passed as the car drove through the spiral mountain roads until I saw foreign land.

To say, I had never seen such scenic beauty. It was an area of dense forest yet lush green fields could be seen as far as I could see, river streaming down the hills. It captured my heart but I wasn’t exactly feeling like celebrating.

The man sitting on the passenger seat held an aura which both terrified and overwhelmed me at the same time. I didn’t dare to glance at him but I could feel his gaze on me, his powerful wolf tried to connect with us but I knew, he was supressing his wolf.

Perhaps, he saw me as a possession he won from Alpha Hayden.

“Alpha, we’re here.”

I heard the other man, his Beta speaking and I realized that we had stopped in front of a huge house, probably his packhouse. It was a three-storey building and tough built men guarding it.

“We’re at my home. I want you to compose yourself and do not act like a mutt. Remember, you’re not just a captive here.” I heard Winston speaking, his voice deep yet smooth and stepped out of the car.

I wasn’t just a captive!

“Pretty way to remind me that I am not a guest here either.” I blurted out and heard a low warning growl but it wasn’t Winston but his Beta.

“This isn’t your father’s pack, Miss Cullen. You must pay respect to our alpha in every manner.” Beta Logan said to me in a warning tone.

I shivered seeing the darkness in the lycan’s eyes.

A man came to my side of the door and opened it.

I shivered when warm, gentle wind brushed my exhausted body.

“Do not talk to anyone unless I or Logan allow you. Remember, this isn’t your ordinary wolf pack. Death and danger linger in the air here.” Winston’s voice reached into my ears.

It was a prior warning and no one better than me knew how to survival among toxic people who hate your guts.

“Do you understand, little dove?” He repeated and I was snapped out of my thoughts.

“Yes, Alpha.” I nodded my head.

Although, Kira was leaping with excitement as she felt our mate close to us but I knew I had to bury my brewing feeling for him until I could trust him and also find a way to show him our bond.

Men circled us as soon as they heard their Alpha’s command, their heads bowed in respect.

Winston, who was as tall as 6’2 compared to my 5’4 height, I felt like a tiny creature as he shielded me behind him protectively. We stepped inside his packhouse and different intimidating scents made me quiver.

“Welcome back, Alpha.” I heard a female voice, it held tenderness and also regal dominance.

“Thank you, Mother. I hope everything was in order in my absence.” Winston replied to her.

So, it was his mother and I finally dared to look at the woman, who indeed held the aura of a high rank born wolf. Tall, lean, fair and radiant with long wavy hairs reaching to her waist. She could be mistaken as his sister but then I remembered that lycans age slower than other werewolves.

“And who is she?”

Her question, directed at me snapped me back in the reality and I found her staring at me with her amber green eyes, they were full of curiosity, suspicion and also judgement.

“She’s my future bride, Mother.”

My heartbeats accelerated. He announced it in front of his mother and others present there. Her pupils dilated and her gaze shifted back to her son.

“Can we talk, Winston in private? She rather commanded her son to follow her as she left.

I tried to hide more behind Winston because of all the curios gaze on me.

“Logan, arrange a room for Averine. She must be treated with fair respect. If I found out that anyone tried to bully her or insult her, I’ll have their heads.” Winston ordered Logan in his deep, alpha tone.

“Yes, Alpha. Miss Cullen will feel no discomfort.” Logan bowed.

I felt a tug on my elbow and I felt a wave of sensation floated through my body cells.

“I’ll come to see you later, little dove. You can make yourself feel at home. You’re safe here.” He said to me, his voice was promising and I found myself trusting this handsome stranger.

“Yes, Alpha.” I said but it was a lie.

Living among lycans who were both powerful and dangerous for a half werewolf like me, wouln’t be a bed of roses.

“Follow me, Miss Cullen.” Logan said to me in a flat tone.

I could see clouds of doubts and also a sense of superiority in his expressions.

I followed him like an obedient puppy clutching my revealing dress tightly. We walked through corridors and different rooms but I chose to dart my eyes on the floor to avoid their stares. It was better to remain invisible until my future would be certain.

“This is your room. You’ll only talk to a maid who will bring your presentable clothes and these two guards. Remember my words, you will not say a single word to anyone and won’t misbehave with anyone if you don’t want yourself to be dead. Our alpha isn’t always kind.” Logan smirked.

“You don’t need to worry about me, Beta.” Saying this, I stepped into the room and closed the door.

I sighed in exhaustion when I heard their footsteps retreating but I knew, I wasn’t alone there. The guards were still outside.

Scanning the room, I found it bigger than my old room at my father’s pack. At least, they didn’t thrust me into a dungeon or a dark cell.

I opened the curtains and stared out at the green mountains, I was breathing in free air but I couldn’t be sure if I’d survive there.

What if Winston lose his interest in me?
