Dante's phone rang again after a short time, jolting us all from the silence we were caught in. I sat up instantly and my heart pounded against my ribs. Dante was already reaching for his phone, his expression going cold as he stepped aside to answer the call. I could tell he was nervous also.

I held my breath, watching him. His lips moved, his voice low as he said, “Yes, Commissioner.”

Then there was a pause. His eyes darted toward me, and I felt my entire body get tense.

When he hung up, I was on my feet before he could even say a word.

“Tell me,” I demanded, my voice trembling. “Please, Dante—tell me.”

“She’s been found,” he said simply, and my knees nearly gave out.

I clutched my chest, trying to breathe as he went on, “They got her from Marcus in Chicago. A child care service official flew back with her. She’s safe, Sienna. Perfectly fine. They already ran all the medical checks—no harm was done.”

I didn’t wait for another word. “Let’s go get her. Now.” I ordered

By the time Abigail finally drifted off to sleep that night, the house felt different. It was quieter in that tender way that only comes after a long, draining day. I lingered at her doorway for a moment, my fingers curled lightly around the frame. Her small body was curled on her side, one hand tucked under her cheek, breathing slow and even. I closed the door softly, letting the lock click into place, and when I turned around, Dante was leaning against the hallway wall with his hands in his pockets, shoulders relaxed, and a faint smile beaming across his lips.“Come with me,” he said, his voice low and effortlessly persuasive.I gave him a look, half-tired, half-suspicious. “Dante… What's this about? I’m really exhausted, I need to rest– ” I grumpily said.“Of course you need to rest, but you need to eat first.” he interrupted, shaking his head. “Just trust me.”I followed him into the dining room, and I let out a little scream before I could stop it. The table was set for two with

By the time we got home, the sky had already turned dark as the night began to grow old. The house was quiet. In fact too quiet for my liking, but it felt different now. Less like a shell and more like a sanctuary, simply because she was back inside it. I had my daughter back with me and that was the happiest feeling. Abigail skipped down the hallway in front of us, still holding on to her stuffed bunny, her tiny feet skipping happily against the extremely polished floor. She had no idea how tightly I was holding myself together, how every nerve in my body was still humming from fear that hadn’t yet burned out, but seeing her was just enough relief.Dante followed close behind, carrying the small paper bag from the ice cream shop that contained cookies we didn’t even touch because Abigail had been too full. I knew he was keeping them for later, maybe as a sweet surprise for her tomorrow.“Come on, munchkin,” I called softly. “Bath time.”She wrinkled her nose. “No mummy, No.” She sai

“Dante,” I repeated, stepping closer, my voice shaking, “What is it? What did the commissioner say?”He turned away slightly, still gripping the phone like it was burning a hole through his hand. His jaw was tight, his shoulders stiff, and every second of silence stretched out like torture.“Please,” I begged, my heart thudding violently in my chest. “Just tell me.”He finally looked at me. “Sienna… I need you to remain calm.”Oh God.I took a step back, the blood draining from my face. “What does that mean?”“The police are still on it,” he said, too carefully. “They're coordinating with the authorities—”“Dante,” I snapped, my voice rising, “Would you tell me what he said already and stop dancing around it like I’m some child. It’s my daughter we’re talking about here, and you keeping me in suspense isn’t helping at all. Rather, you’re making me feel even worse than I already do. I don’t give a shit about staying calm right now!”His mouth tightened. Then, finally, he exhaled sharpl

I didn’t know how I was still standing. The drive home from the station felt like a dream. A cold, dark, suffocating dream where the world was spinning too fast and I was stuck in slow motion.I should’ve stayed at the station. I should’ve combed every corner of the mall. I should’ve done something at least, anything to help find my child. But Dante…He’d looked me in the eyes with those steady, calm eyes of his and said, “You need a change of clothes. Something warm to eat. You haven’t slept, and you’re shaking. Let me take care of you, just for a few hours.”I wanted to fight him. I so badly wanted to disagree with him and tell him I didn’t care what I looked like or whether I passed out from hunger. My baby was gone, and finding her was all that mattered to me at this point. But in the end, I nodded.I let him lead me into the car and I let him drive us home. The second I stepped into the house, something inside me broke. It hit me like a wave. Every memory carved into the walls, i
