Calla's POV

The Blackthorn Hall looked exactly the way I remembered it, which was somehow worse than if it had changed. Same gray stone facade, same tall windows, same wide steps I'd once been dragged up as a prisoner instead of walking them now on my own two feet.

I stood at the base of those steps, the four brothers arranged around me, Jade just behind my shoulder, all of us still for a moment; none of us seemed willing to break first.

Jade squeezed my hand once, grounding and warm. "You don'

  • CLAIMED BY THE FOUR ALPHA BROTHERS   chapter 169

Calla's POVThe lamps stuttered again before the elder had finished his next sentence, and this time they didn't catch up right away. The whole row along the ceiling dimmed to a sullen amber, held there for the length of a long breath, and then brightened in a ragged, uneven surge that made the shadows leap and swing across the walls like something alive. A murmur went up from the rows, more irritation than alarm, and a guard near the east wall looked up at the fixtures with a frown, clearly composing the complaint he'd file with the maintenance office in the morning.Under it, so low that I felt it in my back teeth before I heard it, a hum began.I knew that sound. I would have known it anywhere, in any room, after any length of time, because it had lived in the back of my skull for weeks after the forest, a drone like a great bell struck underwater, too deep for ears and too persistent for sleep, and I had told myself at Duskmoor that it was gone. That it had been a symptom of terro

  • CLAIMED BY THE FOUR ALPHA BROTHERS   chapter 168

Calla's POVThe doors to the hall were still swinging shut behind us when I realized that every head in the room had already turned, three hundred of them, slow and silent, like a field of wheat bending in a wind I couldn't feel, and I kept walking down the center aisle with Daven's hand at the small of my back and my chin up because I'd learned in the last two hours that lowering it only made the staring heavier. It was different now. When I'd first come through those doors at the start of the assembly, they had looked at me the way people look at a stranger who has wandered into a funeral, with suspicion and pity and the faint relief of not being her. Now they looked at me like I was a sentence they hadn't finished reading. A woman near the aisle pressed two fingers to her lips as I passed. An old man in a gray coat inclined his head, only a little, the way you'd greet someone whose rank you hadn't quite decided on yet, and the gesture was so unexpected that I almost stumbled and ha

  • CLAIMED BY THE FOUR ALPHA BROTHERS   chapter 167

Calla's POVThe antechamber door had barely clicked shut behind us when my knees finally gave out, and I would have hit the stone if Knox hadn't caught me under the arms and lowered me onto the nearest bench with the unhurried care of a man setting down something breakable."I've got you," he said. "You're fine. Breathe.""I am breathing.""You're doing a very fast version of it." He crouched in front of me, his big hands warm around my elbows, and the worry in his face was so open and so uncomplicated that I almost laughed. "Soren.""I see her." Soren was already beside me, two fingers on my wrist, his eyes on a wall clock behind my head as though it could tell him something his own body couldn't.His hand was steady and cool, and I understood, with a small pang, that this was how he said he'd missed me every hour since the last time I'd been carried out of a room. "Pulse is high. Not dangerous. You've been standing on adrenaline for close to two hours, and your body is sending in th

Calla's POV"Thaw," said an elder with iron-gray braids and a voice like a rusted hinge, and he said it as though the word itself had a bad taste. "You call it a thaw, Maren, and I call it a trap with a Duskmoor ribbon on it.""Then tell me what the trap is for," the woman beside him shot back, not bothering to lower her voice. "Because I've been looking at that boy for twenty minutes and I haven't found the hook yet."The hall had come apart in a way I hadn't expected. After Ronan's word was accepted, there had been a single suspended breath, and then the whole room had burst into argument at once, elders leaning across each other's laps, old grudges being dragged out of pockets and examined in the lamplight, voices rising and falling in clumps like weather moving over a field. Nobody was shouting. That was the strange part; nobody was really angry. It was more like watching a house full of people discover a door in a wall they had walked past every day of their lives."Four generati

Ronan's POVMy knees made the decision before the rest of me did, which was a new experience, and by the time I understood I was standing, the whole hall had already turned around to watch me do it.Three hundred Blackthorn wolves, and every last one, with a grandfather who had once, at least one, sold somebody else's story at the border for a fat coin. Raider, thief, liar, grinning like a bastard at the border and selling a map to the other side. I'd grown up on the black half of those stories; I knew the hatred in that room the way you know the weight of your own coat, and I walked in tonight, chin out and gun hand near my belt and all the fight I could summon in me to tell me if I said one word somebody would figure out where I could put it.There had not been a single hiss."The council acknowledges Ronan of Duskmoor," the white-haired elder said. But what struck me was how even he said it, no teeth clenched, no formal disdain. He said my name like a neighbor. "You may speak to

  • CLAIMED BY THE FOUR ALPHA BROTHERS   chapter 164

Calla's POVThe scar on my shoulder started to burn halfway through my next sentence, a slow, dull heat that spread outward under the fabric like a hand pressed flat against old bruising, and I stopped talking so abruptly that the elder nearest the aisle half rose from her seat as though I might be about to fall."I'm all right," I said, and then, because it was a lie and the hall had already heard enough of those tonight, "It does that when I say certain things out loud. I think it's listening."A murmur went down the rows, uneasy and curious in equal parts, and I decided that if I was going to stand in front of three hundred wolves and describe the strangest months of my life, then I might as well stop trying to make them sound ordinary, so I pulled the collar of my dress aside and let them see it, the pale ridged line across my shoulder with the faint seam of gold running through its center like something poured into a crack and left to set."Six months ago I had this," I said. "It
