Chapter 4

作者: Amber Fleck
I looked inside the operating room. Victor's chest cavity had already been cut open. There were only faint fluctuations left on the heart monitor.

The doctor hurriedly broke free from my grip. "Ms. Crowell's daughter suddenly had an allergic reaction. The entire hospital has been reassigned to rescue her, so the surgery has to be put on hold."

"You're not allowed to leave!" My voice was raw as I tremblingly pulled out my debit card. "How much is she paying you? I'll double it. So, please, finish my son's surgery!"

Afraid they would think it was too little, I took out my phone, ready to transfer the money first. It was only then that I clearly saw the note attached to the wire transfer; it was the fee Vivian paid to rent out the doctors.

"Sir, this isn't about money. We're afraid of losing our jobs!" No matter how hard I begged, the doctors still pried my fingers away one by one and left.

Victor lay all alone on the operating table. In another half hour, he would have been able to welcome a new life. Yet, now, because of his own biological mother, he was left here with his chest cavity wide open, waiting to die.

Just then, a message from Elliot popped up. In the photo, Eleanor merely had a mild rash. Yet, her ward was packed inside and out with rows of doctors. Vivian sat on the edge of the bed, feeding Eleanor the blueberry cake that was Victor's absolute favorite.

Elliot's tone was brimming with smugness. "Vincent, weren't you pretending to be oh so magnanimous? Don't you only want money, not love? How does it feel to watch Victor die right before your eyes?

"If you hadn't remarried Vivian, I might have given you some money just to put some good in the world for my daughter's sake. But you just didn't know your place, did you? For the sake of that marriage certificate and a pathetic title, you cost your son his life!"

I nearly crushed my phone in my grip. Time ticked by, second by second. If this dragged on any longer, Victor's anesthesia would wear off, and the pain would kill him.

I dialed Vivian's number over and over again. Not once did the call go through.

As the lines on Victor's heart monitor grew dangerously flat, I turned on my phone camera and begged on my knees. "I'll give Vivian up to you, Elliot. I beg you, just order the doctors to come back! I'll give you every single cent she transferred to me.

"Once Victor's surgery is over, I promise I'll disappear for good. I will never bother your little family of three ever again!"

Vivian immediately called after I sent that video. As soon as it connected, she lashed out at me. "Cut the act, Vincent! I only called away two surgical assistants. I can't believe you'd actually gamble with Victor's life just to sabotage Elliot!"

Elliot sniffled beside her. "Vivian, it's all my fault that Ellie had an allergic reaction during Vic's surgery. Due to that, you couldn't stay by his side."

Realization dawned on Vivian. "Vincent, are you putting on this whole show just to remind me that I haven't paid you my rent? Honestly, you shouldn't go by Carrington anymore; you should just change your last name to Cash!"

The phone call was abruptly cut off. Popping up right alongside the text notification of the incoming transfer was a tidal wave of news headlines.

"Vincent Carrington is Obsessed with Money. His Wife, Mother's Grave, and Even His Son's Life Can All Be Rented Out for Cash!"

"Pure Evil. Did Vincent Carrington Halt an Open-Heart Surgery Just to Film a Video and Frame Someone for Cash?"

With trembling hands, I dialed emergency services, desperately hoping to call in doctors from another hospital. However, the ambulances were completely blocked by a massive crowd of media personnel who had rushed over to film the scene.

I grabbed the scalpel beside me and waved it like a madman, solely to carve out a path of survival for Victor.

Meanwhile, Vivian began to grow restless. She repeatedly clicked into the news articles, feeling a bit hesitant. "Vic is still in surgery, after all. Did I go too far?"

When she saw Eleanor looking perfectly lively on the hospital bed, she still got up and rushed toward the operating room. When she arrived at the scene, the sight before her eyes nearly made her knees buckle...

After the routine checkup was over, I flew back to the north with Victor once again. Victor was discovered to have an extraordinary talent for painting. Hence, I hired a teacher to nurture his skills. I collected every single one of his artworks and carefully preserved them. I even registered a social media account just for him and uploaded scanned copies of his paintings. Before long, he accumulated quite a number of followers. When Victor was 13, he had already achieved a certain level of fame. I organized an art exhibition for him back home. To my surprise, the number of visitors at the venue far surpassed all my expectations. After that exhibition, Victor's confidence soared, and inspiration came to him endlessly. His paintings also began fetching high prices online. He urged me to put his earlier paintings up for sale. I refused, but I did not stop him from selling his newer works. When Victor turned 17, he went viral again because of the sale price of one of his paintin

I spun around, only to realize Victor had gotten out of the car at some point. He tugged at the corner of my shirt, looking lost. Vivian paled. "What are you on about, Vic? I'm your mom! Are you saying that because you're still mad at me? "I was wrong, Vic. Please forgive me!"Victor took a step back. "Ma'am, my mom died a long time ago; she even appeared in my dream to watch over me during my surgery. How could you possibly be my mom?""You heard him. Get the hell out of here, and don't you dare trigger my son!" Tears welled up in her eyes, and she parted her lips. However, she ultimately left, looking utterly heartbroken and lost. She left before I could call the cops.Unfortunately, she still refused to give up.…I took some time off from work and drove Victor to and from school every day, not daring to let him out of my sight for even a second. That night, while I was blow-drying Victor's hair, he suddenly said, "Daddy, why does Eleanor's mom keep showing up near my sch

The doctor whispered in my ear, "All of his numbers look good, but his memory appears to have taken a bit of a hit. He's under the impression that his mother has passed away. He's still fresh out of surgery, so try your best to just play along for now. We can't risk triggering him."After hearing the doctor's words, I let out a wry chuckle. I never expected that what I had said to Vivian, that she no longer deserved to be Victor's mother, would actually come true in a roundabout way. I bent down and stroked Victor's head. "Vic, once you get discharged, what do you say we move somewhere new and start fresh, just the two of us?"…I took out the visas I had prepared long ago and moved with Victor to a small town in the north. Aside from the rent Vivian had paid to keep Elliot and his daughter company, I had also received a large sum of money from the divorce, which was more than enough for Victor and me to live comfortably for the rest of our lives. I bought a villa with a yard an

In an instant, all the color drained from Vivian's face. "Vic is… no more?"She reached out to steady herself against the wall before sliding all the way down to the floor. "How is that even possible? The surgery was clearly about to end…"She began to tremble violently, and the items she took slipped from her grasp and crashed to the ground. It was a divorce certificate and a bankbook. "What is this, Vincent? Is it our divorce certificate from last time?" Vivian reached out and tried to seize me. "I know I messed up. Please stop punishing me and let me see Vic… I stopped caring about Elliot a long time ago." I only did all of that because it felt like you only cared about money and didn't give a damn about me. I just wanted to get a rise out of you!""You did all of that to get a rise out of me?" I picked up the bankbook from the floor and hurled it at her face. "You used my son's life just to push my buttons? You're a fucking monster, Vivian! This bankbook belongs to Vic."Fo

The equipment in the operating room had been knocked all over the place, and a chaotic trail of blood stretched all the way out into the corridor. The doctors she had brought with her all sucked in a sharp breath. Vivian yanked one of them over and bellowed, "Didn't I tell you to leave the chief surgeon behind? Why is the operating room a complete mess? Where's my son?"The doctor stammered, "M-Mr. Everhart said his daughter was having a severe allergic reaction, so every doctor in the hospital had to go over... He also said he would bear all the consequences, and if we delayed his daughter's treatment, he would make sure we all paid dearly!"The veins on her temples bulged. "So, you just left my son on the operating table to die?"With bloodshot eyes, Vivian snarled, "Find him!"Recalling the sheer despair I showed when I knelt and begged Elliot in the video, she could barely stay on her feet. Vivian had truly believed that I was only vying for her attention and deliberately put
