I was still settling in, afraid to come out, afraid of what could happen next. I sat there alone, scared and anxious, but unwilling to leave the comfort of my sanctuary.

There was a sudden knock on the door. Startled, I jumped up from where I had been sitting. My heart beat furiously as I took one shaky step towards the door.

He was there staring at me, his eyes were blazing with an intensity that made them shine like fire. His mouth was set firmly into a hard line. There was no hint of gentleness or understanding there. All of it was focused on me. And yet somehow I found myself feeling safer than if he hadn’t looked at me. It felt familiar somehow. He was frightening. Terrifying even. But also warm.
