The four rogues circle me, snarling with their eyes gleaming with hunger.

With a deep breath, I shift and growl fiercely, ready to defend myself.

But,...

Just as I bend my legs to leap, a strong gust of wind blows behind me. A shadow leaps past me in a blur and lands in front of me with grace and power. It’s a massive wolf, a lycan!

“Did they hurt you?” the lycan asks in a low growl.

My eyes widen at the recognition. That voice, it’s Orvyn’s!

Why is he here, leaving the ball? Did he follow me? But why? To confuse my feelings again?

One rogue smirks. “Well, well, look who we got here tonight.”

Another sneers. “A piercing left hazel eye and a cold blue one on the right. No doubt, this is gonna be our most expensive and delicious meal ever!”

Before I can even blink, the four rogues lunge at once. Orvyn meets them head-on with a thunderous roar, shaking the forest.

Blood splatters the ground. Bodies flow through the air. Loud thuds and howls echo.

Orvyn is fast, strong, and sharp, obviously well-trained for combat. Even so, the rogues have the numbers. They claw at his sides, wounding and weakening him.

I can’t just watch and do nothing!

I growl and leap to help Orvyn.

But he turns and shouts, “Don’t! I will not let you get hurt! Not under my watch!”

I freeze, as if his words have some spell that makes me obey them.

All my life, I’ve only ever have myself to rely on—no one ever shielded me and fought for me. But now, someone… a king is willing to bleed for me. And that terrifies me more than being alone ever does.

In the spur of the moment, loud pawsteps echo, going in our direction.

When the royal guards appear, the rogues frenziedly limp away. Some of the royal guards chase them through the trees. Others rush to Orvyn’s side as he falls to his knees, panting, and shifting back into his human form.

Orvyn smiles at me, his gaze soft. “Happy to see you’re unhurt.” He then orders the royal guards, “Bring Thalissia inside the palace and make sure she’s safe.”

As we all walk back, Orvyn adds, “Don’t go anywhere again and make me worry like that. I’ll see the royal doctors first then return to finish the ball. So wait for me there.”

I... worry him? Is that a subtle confession that I matter to him? But what about his fated mate? Monique can’t be lying. My wolf was hurt when it felt their mate bond.

If he already has a fated mate, whom he’s in love with, what am I to him?

I step back into the grand hall, transitioning to my human form, with my dress muddy at the hem and my eyes fixed on the floor.

“Thalissia!” Alpha Nympha calls in a sharp voice, her arms crossed, her face tight with annoyance.

Other she-wolves from our pack stand behind her, sneering.

“King Orvyn ran after you half an hour ago. You’re back, but he’s not. What did you do out there alone with him?” she asks.

“I’m sure nothing romantic happened. I mean, how could the king stomach romancing a fat girl like you?” another she-wolf adds, awkwardly convincing herself more than anyone else.

I hate entertaining them and making the situation worse. So I keep my silence.

Just then, the MC’s voice echoes across the hall. “King Orvyn had an encounter with rogues while protecting one of his guests. But don’t worry. He is safe now and will be joining us shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

Gasps fill the air. Then comes whispers, glares, and judgment. All eyes turn to me.

Monique storms toward me and hisses, “Because of your childish drama, you endangered my brother and almost ruined this sacred ceremony!”

She grabs my dress by the shoulder and accidentally rips it. Her eyes widen in shock—but she doesn’t apologize. She turns away coldly, pretending that nothing happens.

The others laugh, join in, and tear more of my dress.

“No! Please!” I beg.

But they don’t stop.

There’s an urge for me to fight back, and rip their dresses and grab their neatly embellished hairs too, but I stop myself.

“You deserve it,” Alpha Nympha smirks.

Once they’re satisfied, I’m in rags, crying and hiding my body as much as I can.

I can’t look at anyone out of humiliation. I wanna run away again, but then remember the consequences of doing it earlier.

In the end, I remain stuck at the corner, my gaze on the floor, my arms covering my body.

Unexpectedly,...

Victoria, Orvyn’s fated mate, approaches me with a blank expression. “I’m sorry this has to happen to you. Orvyn would protect and risk his life for anyone, including them. It’s his duty as our king. So they have no reason to be jealous and cruel to you like this.”

Her voice is soft, but the message is clear: You’re not special. You’re protected out of duty, nothing more.

When Orvyn finally returns, his eyes find me at once, as if he’s really searching for me.

“What happened? Who did that to you?” he asks, voice sharp with rage.

Instead of answering him that’ll surely escalate the tension, I just reply, “Thank you so much for giving me the chance to experience this one-of-a-kind event. But, if you’d excuse me, I’d like to go home now.”

As I turn to leave, Orvyn reaches out and gently holds my arm.

“You’re not going,” he says. “The ball is about to end, and I want you to stay until then.”

“Please, I—”

Orvyn pulls me with him, forcing me to walk up the stairs and putting me under the excruciating spotlight once again.

He’d probably shame or punish the ones who humiliated me. But I doubt he’ll include his sister.

“You don’t have to do this. I’ll just leave… so the rest of you can enjoy the night,” I whisper, tugging on his hand.

Orvyn slides his hand from my arm to my hand. He holds it tight without any sign of letting it go anytime soon. Then, in front of the entire crowd, his voice rings out clear and bold.

“I, King Orvyn of Karyndor, will take Thalissia of the Frostveil Pack as my chosen mate— and your future queen!”

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 57: HAPPY BIRTHDAY, THALISSIA!

Orvyn holds my hand, but I still can’t bring myself to look at him. My eyes drift toward the calm lake, while my mind circles around his regrets about choosing me over Victoria, and my photo with his note, where he judged my emotional and physical insecurities. “To be honest,” he begins, his voice cracking as though it hurts him to speak, “I really don’t know what I should tell you. I’m ashamed to have said those words. But… choosing you and loving you is something I don’t and will never regret. I was just upset at myself for letting so many get hurt, including you. I felt like I failed.” “You failed the moment you started to love me. That’s a good reason to be regretful,” I counter. “No. I’m happy to love you. I’m even happier to build a family with you,” he argues, his words firm, yet pleading. I want to confront him about the photo too, about his cruel note, but I pull back. Whatever alibi he gives, I doubt I’ll trust it anyway. So I’d rather not hear him speak about it.Orv

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 56: WHO'S PROFESSOR ADELAIDE?

My chest feels tight, and my stomach churns.I can’t concentrate all throughout the lessons as the thought that I may be learning from my r.apist’s mother, who’s pretending to be someone else, keeps haunting me. Why does no one in the palace recognize her and even allow her entrance? The hours drag on painfully slow. When the lessons finally end, I thank her, trying to keep calm and unsuspicious. But the little smirk on her painted lips tells me that she's already noticed my anxiety and is possibly amused by it.Outside the study room, I stop in my tracks when I see Orvyn waiting and smiling warmly at me. He looks so much stronger and finer than before.“How’s your lessons?” he asks.I open my mouth to tell him what I saw when Lady Olivia’s look-alike steps out of the room.“It’s nice to meet you again, Your Majesty,” she says, politely.Orvyn’s soft expression hardens instantly. His jaw clenches, and his eyes grow dark. Yet, her smile doesn’t falter. “It seems like you’re not aw

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 55: DISTANCE

I continue to refuse speaking to Orvyn coz the emotions are still too raw and too fresh to shake off. He spends a few moments with me, trying to start up a conversation, but I give him no reply or reaction. When it’s time to leave the palace, he has no choice but to give up and go with the Bloodbane wolves. Great! Now, I’ll have the bedroom for myself! I need space and silence to clear my head and relax my emotions.Unfortunately,...His words, “If only I can turn back time, I would’ve chosen you to be my queen,” while caressing Victoria’s cold face, keep echoing in my head. I try to think of something else for distraction, but the memory won’t leave me. Even after a few hours, when Orvyn finally returns, that same scene is still all I can think about. I don’t even notice him at first until his voice breaks my thoughts.“Hey, my love, this is for you,” he says, holding out a bouquet of red roses to me.My heart says to take it, just to avoid an argument. But my brain screams “N

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 54: REGRETS

THALISSIA’S POV: I run as fast as I can, my heart aching like it did before. All of Orvyn’s lies and vile plans against me come back all at once. They suffocate me to the point I lose track of my surroundings. I knew it! Our relationship that begins with lies will never end well, no matter how much the two of us try to fix it! I partly blame myself for exposing Victoria’s fake pregnancy. But hearing Orvyn admit how much he regrets choosing me over her is too much to bear. I didn’t want him to choose me so he could betray me. I begged him for a divorce, but he refused. By the time he finally became open about it, our mate-bond was already too strong for me to let go. How can I cure him, if we don’t equally share a strong mate-bond? How can I cure him, if he’s wounding me like this? Drops of rain begin to fall from the gray sky, which washes the tears on my face and snaps me out of my thoughts. I find myself almost at the slippery edge of the lake where one wrong step could make

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 53: THE SEVERED MATE BOND

ORVYN’S POV: My heart splinters into pieces and my tears fall hard as I listen to Victoria’s gut-wrenching words. She’s right. I’m a horrible and undeserving fated mate. I asked her to trust me when I said I wouldn’t choose her as my queen in the King’s Selection Ball. I promised that once the Frostveil Pack is destroyed, that’s when I make her my queen. She agreed even though she was skeptical and hurt. But then, I betrayed our bond, and pushed for her death. But what can I do? Save her and let everyone know that it’s fine to attempt murder as long as they have some emotional attachment with the king? How about the justice Thalissia deserves? Should I just dismiss it and pretend it doesn’t matter? If only she didn’t become desperate, she wouldn’t be in that guillotine. You made her desperate when you started fancying your wife, and ignoring her: My conscience echoes through my head, amplifying the guilt I’m already struggling to contain. My entire body freezes when Victoria brave

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 52: AT THE GUILLOTINE

VICTORIA’S POV:I wake up, my body is heavy and weak and my mind is a broken fragment of thoughts. My vision blurs for a while until slowly, human silhouettes appear clear: Queen Aurora with a couple of royal guards behind her.“What brings you here? You never dared visit me before,” I say, frustrated.Queen Aurora’s lips tremble as she answers with a broken voice, “I never intend to visit you here. I was only forced to, to let you know how sorry I was… for not being able to flip your situation around.”My brow furrows in confusion. Then,...Memories strike back, sharp and heavy: Dr. Marlene came earlier, forcing me to take a test to see how my pregnancy was going. I refused, telling her that I trusted only my pack’s ob-gyn. But then everything turned violent. The guards grabbed me when she ordered them to restrain me. I fought back, and she injected me with something that caused me to pass out.I gasp, quickly clutching my stomach as my heart beats dangerously wild. “D-did she fi
