CHAPTER 6: JEALOUSY

last update Last Updated: 2025-07-19 22:37:44

The four rogues circle me, snarling with their eyes gleaming with hunger.

With a deep breath, I shift and growl fiercely, ready to defend myself.

But,...

Just as I bend my legs to leap, a strong gust of wind blows behind me. A shadow leaps past me in a blur and lands in front of me with grace and power. It’s a massive wolf, a lycan!

“Did they hurt you?” the lycan asks in a low growl.

My eyes widen at the recognition. That voice, it’s Orvyn’s!

Why is he here, leaving the ball? Did he follow me? But why? To confuse my feelings again?

One rogue smirks. “Well, well, look who we got here tonight.”

Another sneers. “A piercing left hazel eye and a cold blue one on the right. No doubt, this is gonna be our most expensive and delicious meal ever!”

Before I can even blink, the four rogues lunge at once. Orvyn meets them head-on with a thunderous roar, shaking the forest.

Blood splatters the ground. Bodies flow through the air. Loud thuds and howls echo.

Orvyn is fast, strong, and sharp, obviously well-trained for combat. Even so, the rogues have the numbers. They claw at his sides, wounding and weakening him.

I can’t just watch and do nothing!

I growl and leap to help Orvyn.

But he turns and shouts, “Don’t! I will not let you get hurt! Not under my watch!”

I freeze, as if his words have some spell that makes me obey them.

All my life, I’ve only ever have myself to rely on—no one ever shielded me and fought for me. But now, someone… a king is willing to bleed for me. And that terrifies me more than being alone ever does.

In the spur of the moment, loud pawsteps echo, going in our direction.

When the royal guards appear, the rogues frenziedly limp away. Some of the royal guards chase them through the trees. Others rush to Orvyn’s side as he falls to his knees, panting, and shifting back into his human form.

Orvyn smiles at me, his gaze soft. “Happy to see you’re unhurt.” He then orders the royal guards, “Bring Thalissia inside the palace and make sure she’s safe.”

As we all walk back, Orvyn adds, “Don’t go anywhere again and make me worry like that. I’ll see the royal doctors first then return to finish the ball. So wait for me there.”

I... worry him? Is that a subtle confession that I matter to him? But what about his fated mate? Monique can’t be lying. My wolf was hurt when it felt their mate bond.

If he already has a fated mate, whom he’s in love with, what am I to him?

I step back into the grand hall, transitioning to my human form, with my dress muddy at the hem and my eyes fixed on the floor.

“Thalissia!” Alpha Nympha calls in a sharp voice, her arms crossed, her face tight with annoyance.

Other she-wolves from our pack stand behind her, sneering.

“King Orvyn ran after you half an hour ago. You’re back, but he’s not. What did you do out there alone with him?” she asks.

“I’m sure nothing romantic happened. I mean, how could the king stomach romancing a fat girl like you?” another she-wolf adds, awkwardly convincing herself more than anyone else.

I hate entertaining them and making the situation worse. So I keep my silence.

Just then, the MC’s voice echoes across the hall. “King Orvyn had an encounter with rogues while protecting one of his guests. But don’t worry. He is safe now and will be joining us shortly. Sorry for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.”

Gasps fill the air. Then comes whispers, glares, and judgment. All eyes turn to me.

Monique storms toward me and hisses, “Because of your childish drama, you endangered my brother and almost ruined this sacred ceremony!”

She grabs my dress by the shoulder and accidentally rips it. Her eyes widen in shock—but she doesn’t apologize. She turns away coldly, pretending that nothing happens.

The others laugh, join in, and tear more of my dress.

“No! Please!” I beg.

But they don’t stop.

There’s an urge for me to fight back, and rip their dresses and grab their neatly embellished hairs too, but I stop myself.

“You deserve it,” Alpha Nympha smirks.

Once they’re satisfied, I’m in rags, crying and hiding my body as much as I can.

I can’t look at anyone out of humiliation. I wanna run away again, but then remember the consequences of doing it earlier.

In the end, I remain stuck at the corner, my gaze on the floor, my arms covering my body.

Unexpectedly,...

Victoria, Orvyn’s fated mate, approaches me with a blank expression. “I’m sorry this has to happen to you. Orvyn would protect and risk his life for anyone, including them. It’s his duty as our king. So they have no reason to be jealous and cruel to you like this.”

Her voice is soft, but the message is clear: You’re not special. You’re protected out of duty, nothing more.

When Orvyn finally returns, his eyes find me at once, as if he’s really searching for me.

“What happened? Who did that to you?” he asks, voice sharp with rage.

Instead of answering him that’ll surely escalate the tension, I just reply, “Thank you so much for giving me the chance to experience this one-of-a-kind event. But, if you’d excuse me, I’d like to go home now.”

As I turn to leave, Orvyn reaches out and gently holds my arm.

“You’re not going,” he says. “The ball is about to end, and I want you to stay until then.”

“Please, I—”

Orvyn pulls me with him, forcing me to walk up the stairs and putting me under the excruciating spotlight once again.

He’d probably shame or punish the ones who humiliated me. But I doubt he’ll include his sister.

“You don’t have to do this. I’ll just leave… so the rest of you can enjoy the night,” I whisper, tugging on his hand.

Orvyn slides his hand from my arm to my hand. He holds it tight without any sign of letting it go anytime soon. Then, in front of the entire crowd, his voice rings out clear and bold.

“I, King Orvyn of Karyndor, will take Thalissia of the Frostveil Pack as my chosen mate— and your future queen!”

Trust has always been the most elusive thing in our relationship. And now, just when I’m starting to trust Orvyn again, another issue rises that could ruin his trust in me.“It wasn’t me. There’s no way I’m capable of doing such a thing,” I say, my heart pounding in my chest. I don’t care if the guards believe me or not. It’s Orvyn’s trust I don’t want to lose.Orvyn’s glare is fixed on the items the guards are holding. He doesn’t look at me, doesn’t speak to me. So it’s hard to read what’s going through his head. Instead, he snatches the phone from a guard and starts scrolling through it.“There were attempts to delete the text messages and call logs, but we managed to retrieve them,” one of the guards says.Then,...A recorded call begins to play, Victoria’s chillingly thrilled voice filling the room. -[“Give me an update if you already have Thalissia. I’d like to speak to her first before you kill her, so she’ll never forget me even in hell.”]-Another voice follows, likely the g

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 38: WHO DID WHAT?

Who the hell did this? If this someone knows Victoria once tried to kill me, then maybe it’s true… that it’s also her, not Orvyn, who tried to end my life in Amantheia Paradise Island. If that’s the case, I’d be happy. Well,... Not because someone desperately wants me dead, but because it means I can finally stop doubting Orvyn. When the guards relay Orvyn’s order to Victoria, she bursts into tears. Breaking free from their grip, she crawls toward him and clutches at his feet.“Please, don’t do this to me!” she sobs. “Whoever did this wants me to suffer! Our ceremony is ruined, and I’m being accused of something I can never do!”My tongue itches to remind her of the time she admitted to poisoning me, but I hold back to avoid adding fuel to her distress.Frustratingly, her restraint toward me is nonexistent. She glares, pointing a shaking finger at me. “It’s her! She’s the one who didn’t want this ceremony to happen the most! She’s the one who wants our mate-bond broken the most!”Or

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 37: THE CONCUBINE'S CEREMONY

“I went to your bedroom to check if you’re ready for today’s special event, but was told you spent the night here. It seems like you…” Queen Aurora stops mid-sentence, trying to suppress her anger. She throws me a quick glare, then turns back to Orvyn. “I’ll have Her Highness be escorted to her chamber, so you can get started.” “No need,” Orvyn replies. He faces the maids and adds, “Bring my Queen’s dress here.” The maids’ giggles echo as they leave the study room. “Mom, if you don’t mind? Thalissia and I will take a bath now,” Orvyn says. He then takes my hand and helps me stand. My fingers clutch the torn edges of my clothes, holding them close to my body. He does the same, covering himself as best as he can. But, Queen Aurora stays behind. Her eyes remain cold and unblinking, shifting between the two of us until we reach the bathroom. The bathroom is nothing like the grand ones in our own bedrooms. But right now it feels like a safe haven from the dark entity lurking nearby an

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 36: A CONFUSED HEART... REMAINS CONFUSED

THALISSIA’S POV: I try to focus on what Orvyn is saying about the poor packs we will visit next. I need to know what I can give and how I can help. But my mind keeps drifting to his ceremony with Victoria tomorrow. I hiss inwardly at myself. I shouldn’t care if he makes her his concubine. He tried to kill me before, and he might try again if he finds out what I’m planning about.Gregory’s face flashes in my mind… the lies in his eyes when he claimed he ordered the three Bloodbane Gammas to kill me. He only did it to protect his pack, who’s obviously become Orvyn’s scapegoat. Those three Bloodbane Gammas said it: Orvyn was their mastermind! And I see no reason for them to lie when they’re certain that I was gonna die that night.Suddenly,...My thoughts scatter when Orvyn’s fingers lift my chin and caress my cheek. His eyes are searching me.“If you don’t want the ceremony to happen, then I won’t let it happen,” he says, as if able to read my mind.“No. That’s not what I’m thinking

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 35: THE STORMBOURNE PACK

I suck in a deep breath, pushing my jealousy aside as Alpha Lee and Luna Marion greet me.They both look thinner and more tired than the last time I saw them. "I'm honored to be visited by you again, Your Majesty. Thank you for also bringing Queen Thalissia and Prince Gautnier with you,” Alpha Lee says with a smile. "Come with us and let’s have some tea in our home," Luna Marion warmly offers. Their house is the most decent one I’ve seen in the whole territory. Once inside, I make sure to immediately sit beside Thalissia while shooting Gautnier a glare, silently warning him to stay away. He smirks arrogantly but takes a seat farther.“We apologize that we can only offer tea and some biscuits. We ran out of rice and meat,” Luna Marion says with an embarrassed expression. Before I can respond, Thalissia speaks up with worry in her tone. “What about your wolves? What do they have to eat?”The Alpha and the Luna glance at each other, clearly unsure how to answer.“We’ve been eating…

  • Chosen to be Betrayed   CHAPTER 34: AN UNEXPECTED COMPANY

I didn’t leave Thalissia’s bedroom the whole night. We slept in the same bed. We even bathed in the same bathroom at the same time. And she didn’t complain about any of those. BUT, there was no love making that happened. Even as my wolf stirred with desire, I surprisingly controlled it. It isn’t the right time yet. There are things to fix first. And that fixing starts today.I invited Thalissia to tour the kingdom to slowly show her the truth and make her understand why I make harsh choices, which include choosing her as my queen even though I didn’t love her at first. Maybe then, she’ll stop doubting me and start believing that my love for her is now true and strong. As we prepare to leave, a knock comes, followed by an announcement, “Prince Gautnier is here.”What the hell is he doing here this early? My jaw tightens as frustration claws through me. But a mischievous idea comes—I’ll let him see that I just spent the night with Thalissia. That should send him away.I smirk as I s
