Hailey's POV

The past few days have been an absolute drag, and I honestly couldn’t be more excited for the week to be over. Thank God it’s Friday. Maybe next week won’t suck as much.

I haven't spoken to Matt since Sunday, and we'd been avoiding each other at work... though it was mostly me doing the avoiding. It's exhausting and, frankly, heartbreaking. Thankfully, we didn't have any projects together this week. Otherwise, it'd have been painfully awkward.

I didn’t even realize how much he meant to me until this silent war began. I'd have apologized already, but every time I mustered up the courage to do so, something came up that took my attention away from it.

So now, I've made up my mind to go over to his place to apologize. I fear that if I keep waiting, we might drift further apart until it becomes too late to fix things.

Just as I slip on my go-to sandals and grab my keys, the doorbell rings.

I pause, frowning. I don't really have friends in this city, and even if I did, non

"You can look around for anything you like. Dresses, shirts, skirts, trousers... any piece of clothing at all, we've got them," the sales rep says. "And if you need help deciding, I'll be here to assist you." I nod, my eyes sweeping over the racks of outfits. I spot a pretty dress on a rack by my side and pull it out, but I almost immediately return it when I see how large it is. Definitely not getting that. It'd fit someone who's double my size, and there'll still be space to fit a toddler. I'm not even exaggerating. "Are there any smaller sizes?" I ask with a nervous chuckle, careful not to annoy her. "I don't think this would size me yet." Or ever... hopefully. She looks almost amused as she says, "Of course. This way." She shows me to another rack, then takes out a pair of blue jeans and shows them to me. "These are maternity jeans. They're very comfortable and highly recommended by a lot of pregnant women... and doctors." She tugs the waistband lightly. "This one looks like

Hailey's POV Remind me to never go shopping with Levi's mum again. Not that the opportunity will come again, but if it does, I hope I remember this day. Don't get me wrong, I actually enjoy spending time with her, but I don't think I ever want to do this again. We've been here for almost five hours, and have gone to almost all the clothing stores in the mall, and yet she's only found about four outfits that she didn't see a problem in. She's really picky with everything, but now I understand why her clothes are always perfect. I just wish they didn't take so much time to find. My feet feel sore, and my lower back hurts, like my baby's protesting against my walking about so much. I hear you, babe, I don't want to be here this long either. But I don't have a choice. We move to another store, and I try to stifle a groan. Martha notices me slowing down and turns to me. "Are you feeling okay, dear?" "Mhmm... I am." Lies. "You don't need to pretend, dear, it's understandable if you

I turn just in time to see Levi enter the kitchen. He sees us at the table and stops, only inches away. His hand goes to the back of his neck, and he looks uncomfortable. "I'm stepping out." "Where are you going?" I ask, taking in his outfit of a black tank top and the same color of joggers. "For a run." My brows shoot up. I didn't know Levi did morning runs. Is it a new thing, or had I just failed to notice?"Won't you have breakfast or coffee first?" Martha asks quietly, like she's afraid the question might annoy him. My heart breaks for her. I wish she knew how nice her son is. This would've been easier for her. Levi's looks away, his jaw clenching for a second. But to his credit, he replies, "I don't take anything before my runs. But you can save some for me, I'll eat when I get back." My mouth twitches, and I lift my cup to my lips to hide my smile. While watching his mum interact with him is a bit heartbreaking, watching him try to talk to her, on the other hand, is qu

Hailey's POV It's been an hour since we got back from the airport, and Levi's been unusually quiet. When he came into the house, he headed straight into his room, and he hasn't come out since then. Even when I went to check on him, he wouldn't tell me what's wrong—not that I expect him to—but I suspect it has something to do with his mum being around. I know his parents weren't there for him back then, and I'm sure it's hard for him to adjust now. His mum told me bits of how neglectful she'd been, and she'd expressed how badly she wanted to make things right with him, but she doesn't know how. She'd even asked my help during one of our calls, but I told her she should be the one to work it out with him because I didn't want to interfere. But in truth, I don't have the right to say anything to Levi. Even the little he's shared feels out of place, considering the circumstances surrounding our... marriage. Plus, after I'd confronted his dad that one time, I'd rather not risk my lu

She turns, then gasps in surprise, almost dropping her phone. "I'll call you back," she says to whoever she was on the phone with, before returning the device to her handbag. Her eyes fill with tears as she steps closer. "Levi, son." From the corner of my eye, I notice Hailey stepping to the side, giving us space for our little reunion."Hi, mum," I repeat awkwardly, tucking my hands into my pockets. I really don't know what's supposed to happen next. Are we supposed to hug, wave, shake or?I'm saved from having to make any decision when her arms wrap around me, pulling me into a hug. It takes a moment, but I return the gesture, and she holds me even tighter. I wish I could say I do the same, but no. I keep my arms around her loosely. I really do want to be more affectionate toward her, but it'd just feel odd to me. Especially since I still remember one time when she'd pushed me away when I'd gone to hug her in front of clients. I was just a boy who was excited to see his mother

  • Contract Marriage With My Ex's Boss   Ninety six

Levi's POV Let it be noted in the books that I did, in fact, keep to my side of the bed. But my Hailey, on the other hand? I'm almost led to assume she was a superhero in her dream or something. That seems like the only sensible reason why she moves so much in her sleep. Not only did she bring down the pillow wall and roll over to my side several times—I had to consciously push her over to her side—she also managed to push me to the edge of the bed, and like that wasn't enough, I woke up to her clinging to me like a fucking koala. I'm not complaining, but Christ. What kind of demons does she fight in her sleep? The sleeping position made me develop pains in my arms and legs, but I also suspect she'd kicked me more than once. The mother of my child is a ninja. I guess I should've figured it out from her violent tendencies. I'd love to say that our little sleepover was one of the best nights I've ever had, like in those romance novels, but that would be a fucking lie. "Ugh," Hai
