“Mate!”

He whispered, his voice cold but laced with so much emotion.

The door swung open and as soon as a pretty lady stepped right into the birthday hall, Alpha Dante called out to her, his voice was cold and barely a whisper, his eyes faded into hers and right that moment, everyone froze, nothing else mattered aside the pain that had tightened around chest making it difficult for me to breath.

The hall was consumed by the scent of freshly baked cake, expensive wines, and the exquisite perfume the guests each wore to the birthday celebration of Alpha Dante.

I stood at the corner of the hall after I had just briefly chatted with the wives of a few generals, now I wanted to be with my man.

A smile finally played on my lips the moment I sighted Dante; he stood tall, his broad shoulders held firmly the exquisite suit he wore, and his deep brown eyes sparkled as he laughed with the Alpha that had graced us with their presence on such an important day.

I heard my heart skip a bit as we both locked eyes, and it felt like we were the only ones in the room.

I took a deep breath, my hands trembling while I clutched onto the tiny box. Tonight was the night, the night that I got to reveal my true identity to him. I was going to tell Dante about my identity as the daughter of the Alpha of the strongest pack in the south border.

And with the revelation, I was going to hand over the pack to him, extending his powers to the south; that way, he would become one of the strongest Alpha, and no one would dare challenge him.

I had played this over and over in my head; the look on his face when I revealed everything to him and the thought of it sent waves of excitement down my spine.

But just as I was about to make my move, there was a commotion at the door, as it swung open, she walked in, her raven hair cascading around her shoulder. As her gaze swept through the hall, it locked with Dante with an intensity that made my heart stink.

Dante's expression immediately changed, his eyes froze, and the smile on his face faded away; everyone could tell that something was going on as their attention was fixed on the both of them.

He walked right into her arms. “Mate!” He called out.

“My Mate!” She responded and a stream of tears rolled down her cheek before they both glued to each other.

“I thought Luna was his mate!” I could suddenly hear some of the wives of the generals whispering to themselves, and when they did, their sarcastic gaze was fixed on me, but I stood in the corner, trying so hard to breathe even though my heart continued to choke.

Everyone now had their attention on me, some looked at me with mockery, while some of the guests had sympathy in their eyes.

The party had just returned to normal, Dante guided the lady to a seat, and as they both chatted, nothing else mattered to him.

Not able to stand it any longer and be humiliated, I walked over to them. “Alpha! I would like to have a word with you!”

“Sure! But first, I want you to meet Violetta, she is my–”

“Your mate! I am aware of that, and so is everyone in this room; I want to speak to you now!” I snapped, and without waiting for his response, I stormed out of there, scurrying through the hallway, and he followed.

“What is wrong with you, Laura? Why are you suddenly acting up?” His scrunched-up face stared down at me, and I could not help but scoffed disdainfully at him.

“Did you really just ask me that, you had your hands around another woman all through the party, and I was seated there all alone like a third wheel”

“She is my mate!” He stressed out the last word like he needed me to understand the severity of the situation.

“I fled the day I met my mate, it was all for you. You do know that you are going to have to reject her right?”

I asked, but he lowered his head, hesitant in his response.

“What is it, Dante? You are going to reject her, you are married, you have a Luna, and you have to make her understand that!”

“Fine. I am going to do that but after the party”

“No, you need to do it before everyone else. Didn't you see the way they were all staring at me? You have to reject her In Front of the entire pack”

“I can't, Laura; this is my mate that we are talking about. Rejecting her is enough to hurt as it stands; I have to do it privately!”

He insisted, his eyes widened and consumed with determination. With that look on his face, I knew that I didn't stand a chance against him.

I let out an exasperated sigh. “Fine, do it!” I commanded and furiously stormed out of there.

After the party, Dante had left with the girl. I waited for several hours but there was no sign of him. Everyone had left the hall except for me and the guards who stood outside.

Unable to wait any longer, I went back home, but I could not stop myself from pacing around; my eyelids could not stop twitching, and even when I struggled to get my mind off it, I couldn't.

I had no idea when I finally fell asleep on the couch, but I was woken by a sharp wave of pain in my neck.

“Ahhh!!” I screamed at the top of my lungs, clutched hard on my neck, and could feel the burning sensation at the mark embedded in me by Dante.

My heart sank in despair; I was crushed into nothing because I knew exactly what this pain meant: he was with another woman!

The pain did not stop all through the night; my temperature slowly became high, and my maid Sherry sat next to me all through the night, partying my body with damp clothes, hoping that it would calm my temperature.

But it never stopped; the burning sensation continued all throughout the night; it felt like a burning iron was searing through my skin with every beat of my heart; I was covered insweat, and my eyes were fixed on the sky, hoping that the pain would finally stop.
