LOGINChapter 2.
Maya's POV. I flinched, regret cementing my face as I pulled away from him, and my laughter replaced disgust. He squinted, reading the sharp switch on my face. The party remained silent; everyone was stunned. Grabbing my purse, I sauntered out of the party room, and I could feel many eyes piercing through me like ice daggers in my side views, but I didn't bother to spare one a look. That was Davies Jnr; the name on every girl's lips, the college golden boy, and the boy every girl pretended not to stare at whenever he stepped on the rink. Nathan's toughest rival and most controversial hockey captain at Wartburg College. He was one of the dangerous hockey players in the senior leagues. Strong on the puck, great hockey IQ... name it, and the most gossiped-about male on campus. However, recently his career had been checked into the boards amidst off-ice rumours of him being a reckless playboy. His captain title was hanging by a little thread. Before I rushed out of the party, he cornered me in the bathroom hallway, a hand against the wall as he leaned towards me, trapping me to the wall. "Running away so soon? I thought the Dogfang queen would stick around to face the music." I rolled my eyes, ignoring the charged air and the sweet smell of his musk skin. " I am done partying. Any fuss?" He flicked his tongue, deliberately flashing his cute smile, and my heart stupidly skipped a beat. "Oh, don't tell me that.... Your mood changed when you knew who I was." He pinched the bridge of his nose, his eyes on my lips and back to my eyes. He licked his lips, so wet and kissable. I snapped, arms crossed. "Well, that saves me from overexplaining. About the silly move to kiss you tonight? I am drunk. It's part of the fun of the party." He buried his hand in his pocket, grinning. "That's not new. Wartburg girls do that all the time." What the fuck did he mean? Did he really think I was crushing on him? "I am different from those cheap girls swooning around you." I finally mustered the strength to push past him, my heels rocking on the tiled floor. But his hurried footsteps loomed behind me, and he said just as I pushed through the glass door into the cold air. "You have complicated things for me, Maya." I froze, not turning back. "What do you mean?" He moved closer, his hand on my waist as he spun me around. "Don't pretend Nathan hasn't told you about my sinking career amidst my 'playboy saga" "I don't know what you are talking about, and what's my fucking business with your sinking career?" I lied. "You made it worse by trying to kiss me tonight at the party." He said, his voice laced with satisfaction. I exhaled in regret. I was just trying to move on and stop dating Nathan. It was not deliberate. "You don't sound like you get into trouble." I rolled my eyes. He tipped his lips, squaring his shoulders. "A pretty trouble, however." "What do you want?" I asked, my hands falling limply at both sides. He leaned closer. "You know, Maya. I have been searching for the perfect girl to clean my tainted reputation, and you are the perfect girl." I snapped my head sideways, looking up at him. "Davies, I am the wrong girl; keep searching." I turned around, walking away, but he ran up to my front, blocking my path. I swayed my hip to one side, arms over my chest. "You are the perfect girl, Maya, considering you are the opposing team captain's girlfriend. It will be more believable than a random girl. After all, he cheated on you." "Wait a minute, Davies. If you are really thinking I could be some random girl you can toss around because my boyfriend cheated on me, then," I leaned into him. "Fuck off!" I wanted to walk past him, but he held my arms, yanking me back. "I am only offering you a fake dating contract to be my girlfriend!" The two words "fake dating" and "girlfriend" hit me like a blow. Strange and bittersweet, I looked into his eyes. God! He was serious. "Really? You can't be serious! Can you?" "Name your price, Maya. It's just a roleplay; don't feel overly special here." He chimed in, and I clenched my jaw. "Get lost, Davies," I barked at him and turned on my heels, leaving him on the spot and moving back to my dorm. --- My eyes were still heavy as I adjusted my pupils to the rays of sunlight that lit the room the next morning, but my heart was still dark, stuck in the loop of Nathan's lies and constant betrayal. The memory of his last betrayal still stung deeper even after getting enough vodka at the party; it didn't get any better; instead, it threw me into an unexpected encounter with the campus's controversial hockey captain. My hand tightened on my phone as I grabbed it and met several missed calls from Nathan. My heart skipped a beat, and I held the phone, sitting up. I still loved Nathan. I felt like stabbing out my heart. I seized my thumb mid-air as I was about to tap on his name and return his call, but I changed my mind as Kierra's words hit me again like a tidal wave. My insides twisted, and I felt like throwing my phone on the wall and running my heart through a grinding mill. My phone lit up with Elena's name on the screen. I picked it up. "Maya, really? How did you get to do that? Capturing the attention of the hottest boy on campus at the party." Her voice came sharp and urgent. I crinkled. "Elena, don't tell me you are still drunk." "Absolutely drunk, but truly, girl, the picture of you and Davies is causing traffic on the school handle. Maybe you should check." My heart raced as I quickly drifted into the school social handle and got slammed in the face with different pictures of Davies and me with the caption: The Dogfang captain's queen dumps him for the Westbridge captain, Davies—amidst career flops. I began to swipe the pictures one by one for the moments captured — when we were dancing holding hands, when our gaze locked, and when our lips almost touched. Those pictures were so hot to affirm the false claim, yet looked like bait for the school blogs to trend. I bit my lower lip regretfully. Davies was Nathan's rival; I shouldn't have conversed with him in the first place, talk more of being dangerously close with him at the party. But does that matter? Nathan didn't even think twice before cheating on me with my friend and permitting her to crush past my pride and ego. Well, it didn't matter going viral for dancing with the college golden boy at a party. I called the doctor in charge of my mother's medical treatment. That had been the first thing I did every morning ever since my mum had been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and ovarian cancer to know how well she was responding to her treatment. The doctor had suggested that her kidneys should be replaced with new ones immediately, but instead I opted for dialysis until I could gather the money for her final treatment. However, as of yesterday, the doctor's medical report about her was bewildering and cost me two major lectures absent as I took more extra shifts to gather a little more cash. "Hello, doctor. How is my mum's dialysis?" My voice trembled. Silence stretched between us, sparking curiosity and suspicion. "Your mum's dialysis is failing. You must pay an upfront f*e to secure a spot on the priority donor list and fund intensive chemotherapy treatment immediately, else the cancerous cells will spread to other parts of her body."MAYANeon lights buzzed loud outside the Wartburg ice arena.Stepping out of his truck, the sheer volume of the crowd hit my ears like a physical wave. Hundreds of students packed the concrete plaza, funneling toward the glass entrance doors. Fans wore blue and red jerseys, painting the night in rival colors. The cold air smelled of burnt pretzels, hot coffee, and raw anticipation.Walking side by side, Davies kept his right hand planted firmly on the small of my back. He scanned the crowd, his protective instincts on full alert.“Hold up, Wartburg!”A shrill voice pierced the chaotic noise.Chloe stepped directly into our path. She held her brand-new iPhone mounted on a bright ring light. Her pink microphone aimed straight at our faces.“Wartburg Gossip Live is back!” Chloe screamed into her camera, bouncing on her white sneakers. “We have the Westbridge Captain and his queen arriving for the main event! Davies, the blogs are going crazy! Chat is spamming fire emojis! You guys are se
MAYA“Wake up, Captain.”My voice broke the quiet hum of the hospital waiting room. Touching his broad shoulder, a gentle shake finally stirred him.Davies jerked awake with a violent gasp. His dark eyes snapped open, wild and panicked, scanning the sterile room before locking onto my face. He sat hunched in a cheap plastic chair, his long legs stretched out over the scuffed linoleum floor. Exhaustion painted dark circles under his eyes. He looked dead on his feet.“Maya,” he breathed out, standing up so fast the plastic chair screeched backward. His massive arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest. Burying his face in the crook of my neck, a heavy sigh rattled his ribcage. Returning the embrace, my hands gripped the fabric of his dark hoodie. The scent of wintergreen gum and dried sweat filled my senses.“I am so sorry,” his voice sounded rough, muffled against my skin. “I sat down for five seconds while the doctor checked your head. Passed out cold. I was tir
MAYA“Tie her wrists tight. The boss wants her secured before he gets here.”The gruff voice echoed through a thick, suffocating fog inside my brain.Blinking hard, my eyelids felt like they weighed a hundred pounds. A nasty, bitter chemical taste coated my tongue. My throat burned with every shallow breath. The sickly sweet smell of the damp rag still clung to my skin, making my stomach churn in violent circles.“Bro is tweaking if he thinks we won't catch a charge for this,” a second voice muttered. “Snatching a girl outside a hospital? That is insane behavior. We are caught lacking out here in the open.”“Shut up and lock the back doors.”Cold metal pressed against my cheek. The floor vibrated beneath my body. The faint rumble of a running engine told me I was lying in the back of a vehicle. A cargo van, judging by the lack of windows and the smell of stale oil and rust.Trying to move my arms, a sharp pain bit into my skin.Thick plastic zip ties bound my wrists together behind my
MAYA“Move your feet, Chad! Dogfang will eat you alive if you stall on the blue line!”Coach Vance’s voice echoed through the freezing arena, sharp and demanding. His silver whistle hung from a black lanyard around his thick neck, gleaming under the bright halogen lights.Sitting in the third row of the metal bleachers, my hands buried deep into the pockets of my oversized coat. Frost clung to the plexiglass separating the stands from the rink. Down on the pristine white surface, the Westbridge hockey team ran full-contact drills. Tomorrow night was the main event. Tomorrow night, they faced Nathan. My gaze drifted away from the puck and locked straight onto the team captain.Davies moved like a dark missile across the ice. He wore his black practice jersey, the fabric stretching over his broad shoulders with every powerful swing of his stick. Sweat dripped from the edge of his helmet. He barked orders at Julian, setting up a brutal offensive play that left the defensemen scrambling.
DAVIES"Do not say a single word to me right now."Slamming the heavy wooden door shut, the noise echoed like a gunshot in the cramped space. My boots hit the dorm room floor with brutal force. Tossing my black Nike duffel bag into the corner, a frustrated growl ripped from my throat. My knuckles throbbed with a dull ache. Toxic adrenaline still pumped through my veins, making my hands shake.Maya stood near the center of the room. She folded her arms across her chest. Her dark eyes tracked my every movement. She did not look scared. She looked determined."You are acting like a child, Davies," she stated. Her voice stayed calm, cutting through the thick tension."A child?" Spinning around, my jaw clenched so hard my teeth ground together. "You pulled me back! I had him cornered. He disrespected you. He disrespected my team. I was going to put him in the dirt, and you grabbed my arm!""Because you were about to throw your entire life away!" she fired back, taking a bold step forward.P
DAVIESThat stillness made the hairs on my arms stand up."Bro thought he was the main character," Jax muttered out of the side of his mouth."Shut up and watch," I snapped. "Look at their stances. Look at how they distribute their weight."I studied the Vanguard crew. They did not lean on one leg. They did not cross their arms. Every single member stood poised on the balls of their feet, ready to explode into motion. They were disciplined. They were dangerous. The announcer finished his speech. The crowd went wild."And now, for the exhibition match!" The speakers crackled with feedback. "Vanguard will demonstrate their prowess against the Ironclaw crew!"The grid cleared out. We moved to the sidelines behind a reinforced plexiglass barrier. The center of the arena emptied, leaving a massive circle of packed dirt.Ironclaw stepped into the ring. Five massive guys. They looked like bouncers, all bulging muscle and tribal tattoos. They beat their chests and roared at the crowd. The aud
