Vincenzo's Pov

Bressi and two other loyal contacts were waiting when I got to the meeting point.

I had left her in the room with strict instructions and two armed men outside the door. She had not been happy about it. I had not given her the option to negotiate because there was no negotiation to be had. She was staying safe, or she was not, and I needed her to be safe.

"Tell me what you have," I said, sitting at the table with my hands flat on the surface. <

  • DEADLY FACADE: I Became His Obsession    The Doctors Terms

Lenny's PovVincenzo was awake when the doctor came back in the morning, propped up just slightly on the pillows we had stacked behind him, and the doctor checked his bandages and his pulse and asked him questions in a flat tone that did not give anything away."How is the pain?" the doctor asked."Manageable," Vincenzo said.I almost laughed at that. He had tried to sit up on his own last night and gone pale from the effort and called that manageable. The doctor did not look convinced either, but he did not push it. He finished checking the wound and changed the dressing, then he straightened up and looked between the two of us."Let's talk about what comes next," he said."Talk," Vincenzo said."You are not going anywhere for a while," the doctor said. "Weeks of rest at minimum; there should be no standing unless it is necessary. No lifting anything heavier than a glass of water and no stress."

  • DEADLY FACADE: I Became His Obsession    She Stayed

Vincenzo's PovPain came first; it was not sharp at the start, it was just there, sitting heavy in my side and pulling tighter every time I tried to breathe in too deep. I did not know where I was. I did not know how much time had passed. My body felt like it belonged to someone else, and I could not get it to listen to me.I drifted back under before I could make sense of anything. The next time I came up, there was a sound pulling at me. A voice; I could not make out the words, but I knew the voice and something in my chest loosened just from hearing it. It was steady and low; it kept going even when I could not follow what it was saying.I held onto that sound like it was the only solid thing in the room.I drifted again. Each time I came back, the pain was a little more familiar, and the voice was still there, sometimes closer, sometimes further, but always somewhere near me. At one point I thou

  • DEADLY FACADE: I Became His Obsession    Not Going Anywere

Lenny's PovI did not leave the room. The doctor told me to wait outside; I told him no, and that was the end of it. He did not argue after he saw my face; he just worked around me. I stayed in the corner with my arms crossed, watching every single thing his hands did.Vincenzo was on the table, his chest was moving, and that was the only thing that mattered to me right now.I did not check the clock because looking at it felt like it would jinx something, so I just watched and counted every breath he took. In and out. In and out. Each one felt like something I had to hold onto, or it would stop.Bressi came in once to check, and I waved him back out without looking at him.The doctor worked for what felt like hours. Then he stepped back and pulled off his gloves and looked at me."He's stable," he said.I did not move right away. "Say that again.""He's stable. The lung held, and the

Lenny's Pov Bressi got him into the back seat, and I climbed in after him, pulling his head into my lap before the door even closed."Drive," I said, my voice coming out sharper than I intended. "Now.""Where?" Bressi said, already pulling out fast, tires screeching against the pavement."Anywhere that isn't here. I'll figure out the rest."I pressed both hands against his side and felt the blood warm and constant beneath my palms. I had never in my life felt anything as frightening as the specific way his chest was rising slower than it should have been, each breath a struggle I could feel through his ribs."Vincenzo," I said, leaning close to his ear. "Stay with me. I need you to stay with me."He didn't answer, and the silence was worse than any sound he could have made."Bressi," I said, not looking up from his face. "Talk to me. What do we do?""The doctor who treated Luca," Bres

  • DEADLY FACADE: I Became His Obsession    Stay With Me

Vincenzo's Pov I got Lenny behind the support column before the second wave came. "Stay down," I said, pushing her lower with my free hand. "Behind me. Don't move from this spot." She crouched low, and her voice was sharp. "How many are left?" "I don't know yet. Stay down." Bressi was already firing toward the side entrance where two more men had appeared. Dante's note still sat folded in my jacket pocket, and I had no time to think about Francesca right now, not with rounds coming from a new angle and the walls closing in around us. "Caruso," I shouted across the floor, hoping my voice carried over the gunfire. "Pinned," he called back from somewhere near the pallets. "Second door, three men." I looked at Lenny behind me. She had her gun up and steady, watching the angle I wasn't covering with the focus I had drilled into her at the range.

  • DEADLY FACADE: I Became His Obsession    The Empty Chair

Lenny's Pov I had not stayed in that room. The moment Luca fell asleep from the medication, I had taken the gun Vincenzo got me, left a note on the bed, and gone. I caught up with the team's location through Bressi's car, which Luca had tracked without telling me he was doing it, slipping out a side door of the building before anyone noticed.I found Vincenzo's car two blocks from the warehouse, exactly where Bressi had parked it.I went in through the same side door they had used, twenty minutes behind them. What I walked into stopped me cold in the doorway.Vincenzo and his three men were standing in the open center of the warehouse floor, surrounded. Dante stood near a side office with the relaxed posture of a man who had planned every second of this and was enjoying watching it play out."You shouldn't have come alone," Dante said to Vincenzo, gesturing slightly with one hand. "I expected more strategy

Lenny’s POVGradually, the darkness that had swallowed me finally began to spit me out, taking off its tendrils as I heard sounds muddled in my ear. Soon, the fluorescent lights above me flooded my vision. After taking a minute to adjust, I swept my head from one side to another."You're alive," a

Vincenzo’s POV"I swear I'll get you the money! I wasn't running... I wouldn't dare...!"Behind the pathetic pleading filling my ears, my 8 o’clock class loomed in my mind...I have an essay I've been putting aside. The professor was a pain, but he had a backbone unlike the others in my department,

Lenny's POV"Explain?!" I spat out, throwing my plastic bag at him. "How the heck are you going to explain this?"He dodged—he always had surprisingly fast reflexes—and groaned, pulling up his pants and buckling swiftly."Sofia is a friend,""I'm sure she is," I seethed as he approached me. He had
