CHAPTER 26

Elena didn’t leave the hallway. Not for hours. She stood there, motionless, her back pressed

against the wall, replaying the scene over and over until it carved itself into her skull like a

curse. Every moan. Every thrust. Every word that maid spat about her. About them.

The silence afterward was louder than the sex had been.

She should’ve stormed in. She should’ve clawed Alex’s face until it bled. She should’ve dragged

that woman out by her hair and thrown her into the street like the trash she was. But she didn’t.

She couldn’t. Because then it would be real.

If she stayed quiet, if she stayed hidden, maybe it was just a nightmare.

Upstairs, Alex showered. She heard the pipes groan through the walls, the faint splash of water,

the low thud of his fists hitting tile. He stayed in there longer than usual, as though scrubbing

his skin raw could erase what he’d done.

Elena’s nails dug crescent moons into her palms. You’ll never wash her off.

Malik’s voice softened to a whisper. “You’re not alone.”When she finally looked at him again, there was something new in his eyes — something thatscared her more than all the chaos she’d survived. It was devotion. She could see it there, unguarded, heavy, real. And for the first time, she didn’t run from it.He sat beside her again, not saying another word. Just there — solid, steady, unflinching. Her fingers brushed his, tentative at first, then certain. He didn’t pull away. The rain had stopped completely now, leaving only the quiet hum of the monitors and the soundof their breathing.Elena whispered, almost to herself, “Everything’s falling apart, isn’t it?”Malik looked at her, his voice rough but sure. “Maybe. But sometimes things have to fall apartbefore they can be rebuilt.”The morning light sharpened as the day moved on.Elena had dozed off for a little while, her head tilted slightly toward Malik’s shoulder. He hadn’t moved — just sat there, watching her breathe, tracing

That night, when Alex finally called, he sounded tired. Distant.Like a stranger trying to remember how to speak to someone he used to love.“Hey,” his voice rasped, soft but cold.Elena closed her eyes. Just the sound of him did something to her chest — not warmth, notlonging — something heavier. “Hey,” she whispered back. There was a long pause. She could hear faint music in the background, laughter too. Nothospital air. Not silence.“You’re awake?” he asked finally.“I am. The doctor says I can leave tomorrow.”“That’s good.” Another silence. “You should rest, Lena.”That name — Lena — used to make her heart flutter. Now it just stung.“Alex,” she said quietly, “do you even care that I was in the hospital?”He didn’t answer immediately. She imagined him running a hand through his hair, maybe lookingat someone else while speaking to her.“Elena, don’t start. Please. I’m just… tired.”“Tired,” she repeated. “You’re always tired when it comes to me.”Something shifted in her tone.

The house was quiet again that afternoon. Too quiet.Elena sat in the living room, sunlight spilling across the marble floor, her phone resting on herthigh. She’d been staring at the screen for a long time. Her thumb hovered over the keyboard, thewords typed and deleted, over and over. Then she stopped pretending.“Alex, I’m pregnant.”Send.The sound of the message swooshing away felt like pulling a pin from a grenade. For a long moment, there was nothing. Just silence. Just the steady thud of her heartbeat. Then—three dots appeared.Paused.Disappeared.Appeared again. He was typing. Her chest tightened. Finally, the reply came through.Alex: What? How? Are you sure? Her lips curved slightly. Not in joy. Not even in victory. Just… confirmation. That was exactlywhat she needed to see.No “That’s amazing.”No “I love you.”No “I can’t wait to see you.”Just panic disguised as confusion. She typed back slowly, deliberately.Elena: I took a test. Twice. He didn’t respond immediately

The room still smelled of him.Of sex. Of sweat. Of every word they didn’t say.Elena lay still for a long time after Alex finally drifted off beside her. His arm was heavy acrossher waist, his breath slow, uneven, like someone sleeping through guilt. The sheets weretwisted between their legs, the imprint of what had just happened burned into the bed, into herskin. She stared at the ceiling — blank, quiet, unmoving — her body still trembling, not from what he’ddone, but from what she’d allowed. Her phone buzzed against the nightstand. Once. Then again. She turned her head slowly, careful not to wake him, and reached for it.Unknown number. She frowned, slid the screen open.A woman’s voice came through, smooth and urgent. “Mrs. Alex? This is Anna from the executiveboard. There’s been a sudden change in the LA summit schedule. We need you here tomorrowmorning. The partners are expecting you to present in person.”Elena blinked. “Tomorrow?”“Yes, ma’am. We’ve moved your session up

Elena walked in halfway through, the smell of garlic filling the air. She stopped at the threshold, leaned against the doorframe, arms folded. She didn’t say a word. Just watched him fumblewith a knife, chop uneven pieces, curse when the oil popped and burned his wrist. Finally, she said, “You don’t have to do that.”He turned, sweat beading at his temple, chest tight. “I want to.”Her gaze held his. Silent. Cool. Calculating. She let him stew in it, let him feel the weight of herunspoken questions—Who are you doing this for? What are you trying to prove? Do you thinkgarlic and chicken will fix what you broke? She didn’t say them. She didn’t have to.Alex stirred the pan, his movements rough, clumsy. “Sit down. I’ll bring it to you.”And she did. She sat at the table, robe still loose, legs crossed, her skin glowing against the silk.Watching him, sipping water, not offering help. Letting him sweat, letting him try, letting himbleed his guilt into the pan. When he finally set the

The room still smelled of sex when sunlight pushed through the curtains. Sheets tangled aroundtheir bodies, damp from sweat, the air heavy with what they had done.Elena stirred first, her body sore in every place Alex had touched. Between her thighs was thedull ache of being used until she could barely breathe. She should’ve been furious. Sheshould’ve shoved him away again, made him stew longer in his guilt. But when she shifted, his arm clamped tighter around her waist, pulling her against the hardlength pressing into her back. Already hard. Already throbbing.“Elena…” His voice was gravel, low, almost a growl. He pressed his face into her neck, inhalingdeep like he couldn’t get enough of her scent. “I need you again.”She froze. He didn’t ask. He didn’t beg this time. His hips rolled against her ass, the blunt headof his cock sliding against her, leaving a smear of pre-cum on her skin.“Alex—” she started, but he didn’t wait for permission. He hooked her leg up and over his t
