The morning sun filtered through the car windows, painting golden streaks across Vera’s face as she adjusted the strap of Eira’s tiny backpack from the driver’s seat.

The soft hum of the engine played under the occasional sniffle from the back.

Eira sat unusually quiet in her car seat, her normally bubbly presence subdued as she picked at the little pink bow on her school uniform.

Her curls were tied up neatly, and her glittery lunchbox rested beside her, but there was no brightness in her eyes this morning.

Vera’s heart clenched.

She glanced at her daughter through the rearview mirror. “You okay, sweetheart?”

Eira didn’t answer at first. She just kept playing with the bow, lips pursed, brow furrowed.

Her small body was curled inward, a defensive shell Vera recognized all too well.

The silence wasn’t unfamiliar, but it had been a while since it had hung this heavy between them.

“I saw you didn’t finish your toast,” Vera tried again, her voice soft. “Was it the jam again? I can switch

Asher Donovan had always drawn attention, whether he wanted to or not.But today, no one noticed the man beneath the designer clothes.Even in his tailored suit, with the clean cut of a luxury coat draped over his shoulders and a wristwatch worth a small fortune strapped to his wrist, there was something missing.Something hollow behind the sharp lines of his face, in the way his shoulders sagged just slightly under invisible weight. His once neatly styled hair was slightly overgrown, dark strands falling loosely across his forehead. The shadow of a beard clung to his jaw, not quite the refined scruff he used to sport, no, this was the kind of neglect that whispered of long nights without sleep, of mornings where he no longer cared to look in the mirror. He walked beside Sarah Langford through one of Manhattan’s most exclusive shopping districts, but to say he was walking with her was generous. He didn’t hold her hand.He didn’t look at her.He didn’t say a word unless prompted.Sarah

As he stood to leave, the sound of Vera’s voice from the hallway made him pause.“Is she asleep?”Dorian turned and nodded. “Just drifted off.”“She told me earlier you promised to help her build a castle in the sky next,” Vera said softly, stepping inside. Her voice held warmth, and a subtle smile played on her lips.“She’s got high expectations,” Dorian said.“She’s got you,” Vera murmured, her eyes meeting his in the low light.Neither spoke for a long beat. Finally, Dorian said, “She’s lucky. So am I.”Vera looked down at Eira’s sleeping form, her small hand curled beside her cheek. “Sometimes I wonder if she’ll hate me when she finds out... about her father. About why he wasn’t here.”Dorian stepped closer, his voice low. “She won’t. Because she’ll have the truth. And because she has you.”“And you,” Vera said before she could stop herself. The silence that followed wasn’t awkward...Vera reached down and brushed a strand of hair from Eira’s forehead. “Thank you… for being there

Vera chuckled under her breath and turned back around, her smile fading just slightly as she looked out the window.Eira didn’t have a father. Not in the real sense. And while Vera had poured every ounce of love she had into her daughter, there were still moments like this, moments of longing, connection, and quiet gaps Eira tried to fill with laughter and daydreams.“She’s invited us for dinner next weekend,” Dorian said casually. “I didn’t mention it earlier because I wasn’t sure how tired you’d be.”Vera blinked, looking at him. “Us?”He nodded. “You, Eira, me. Estelle. She even said she’d bake her lemon tarts.”“Lemon tarts!” Eira squealed.Vera hesitated, her gaze flicking to the window again. “Dorian... I..”“You don’t have to decide now,” he said, his voice low and understanding. “Just think about it.”Eira, of course, had already made up her mind.“We’re going!” she declared with the certainty only a child could wield.Dorian grinned. “Then I guess it’s settled.”As they pulle

Vera sculpted towers with the bucket molds while Dorian carefully shaped connecting walls between them. Eira ran back and forth between the edge of the sandbox and her “supplies” bag, dragging over random items she insisted were magical components, a feather, a leaf, a shiny bottle cap.“Here, Mama! This is the unicorn gem!” she declared, plopping the bottle cap on top of one turret.Vera grinned. “Oh, absolutely. It radiates pure magic.”They worked together, heads bowed, fingers caked in sand, and laughter ringing around them like the melody of a perfect afternoon. When the castle was complete, with a moat dug by Dorian and a mini flag crafted by Eira from a twig and a gum wrapper, they all sat back to admire it.“It’s beautiful,” Vera said genuinely.“Because we made it together,” Eira said proudly, crawling into Vera’s lap and resting her head against her chest. “It’s the best day ever.”Vera wrapped her arms around her daughter and kissed the top of her head, feeling something tu

“Knight Dorian,” Eira said solemnly, with both glittery hands on her hips. “It’s time.”Dorian, who was still dramatically “wounded” from their last fairy battle, raised an eyebrow from where he lay half draped over the couch.“Time for what, Your Majesty?”Eira puffed out her chest. “For the royal family’s afternoon outing to the Enchanted Kingdom, also known as the playground.”Vera nearly choked on her tea.“Eira, no. It’s almost noon. You haven’t eaten a real meal, you just had cupcakes. You’re wearing more glitter than clothing. And I have work..”“But Mama,” Eira whined, stomping one sparkly unicorn slipper. “It’s Saturday. And Uncle Dorian said he wasn’t going to his office today. So we have to go!”“Your Uncle Dorian didn’t say anything about...”“Mama.” Her daughter spun toward Dorian with sparkling eyes. “Tell her.”Vera sighed and sent Dorian a firm glance, silently telling him not to indulge her.He froze in his fake injury position and looked between the two Sterling girl

Four years later...The late morning sun filtered gently through the sheer white curtains of the open floor living room, casting soft golden light over the sprawling rug where tiny toys and plushies lay like a pastel explosion.Vera’s apartment hadn’t changed much over the years, modern, elegant, tastefully quiet, but now, it bore the messy signature of motherhood. From the crayon art stuck to the fridge to the tiny ballerina shoes abandoned near the couch, it was the home of a child who ruled with dimpled smiles and pigtails.“Mamaaaa!” came a singsong voice from the hallway. “He’s here!”The thunder of tiny feet on hardwood echoed moments before a small figure barreled into the living room.Three and a half year old Eira Sterling Fontaine, as she insisted on being called when she was “feeling fancy”, skidded to a stop, her oversized unicorn slippers flapping. Her wild curls bounced with each movement, and her bright brown eyes sparkled with mischief.“Uncle Doriannn!” she squealed a

The morning air in the quiet district of the city was brisk, stirring the hem of Vera’s coat as she stood before the tall, curved glass structure that now bore her future.Vantage Studios. Her heart pounded beneath her ribcage, not just from nerves but from the collision of everything she had left behind and what she was about to walk into.Just a month ago, her world had crumbled. She had walked away from Asher Donovan.Pregnant.Heartbroken.Defeated.And yet, here she was, standing taller than the voices in her head that tried to remind her of everything she had lost.A black SUV, Fontaine’s signature vehicle, had picked her up right on time that morning. The driver, dressed in crisp black with a soft French accent, greeted her with the kind of politeness reserved for dignitaries. No delays, no questions, just a smooth ride into the city’s innovation district, where Fontaine’s media conglomerate had just established a branch for new age creative projects.Vera paused for a moment,

Vera didn’t answer right away. Her fingers curled around her mug tighter.“I don’t know,” she finally whispered. “I wanted to tell him tonight. I even thought maybe we could… I don’t know, fix things. But after that call, I just…”She didn’t finish. She didn’t need to.Talia gave her hand a squeeze. “One step at a time. Heal first. Build. When the time is right, you’ll know what to do.”Vera nodded, her heart still raw but her eyes a little clearer.“I think I’m ready,” she said softly.“For what?”“For the fight,” Vera answered. “Not against him. Not against his family. But for me. For this baby. For my future.”And as the city lights flickered against the windows behind her, Vera made herself a silent promise:No matter what heartbreak she’d endured… she would rise.Because this was no longer just her story. It was theirs. The rain poured against the windows of Asher Donovan’s penthouse, much like the way his thoughts crashed inside his skull, loud, messy, and relentless. He paced t
