☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆

Their laughter ripped me open. My heart shattered instantly as tears slipped from my eyes. Unconsciously, I yanked the hem of the dress down, as if to cover the little dignity I had left. But it was only doing so little. Every tug made me feel even more vulnerable.

It was at that moment, I dared to notice some boys ogling at me, winking and blowing kisses. Some girls stared, eyes all judgemental as if I had come to steal the spotlight.

I stepped forward then, ready to confront Megan and her friends. But the instant Celeste turned, our eyes locked. And suddenly, everything I had planned to say wiped clean from my head. Then she smiled, radiant—like she’d known I was there the whole time.

“There you are,” she chimed, looping her arm through mine. “I was just defending your honor.”

Kendra and Sandra rolled their eyes.

“See you later, Celeste,” Megan said.

Celeste nodded. Megan gave me a once-over before turning robotically, strutting off with Kendra and Sandra while Lil

☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆Hayden’s jaw flexed once. He didn’t look at Megan. He looked at the wall above her shoulder like there was a map there he had to memorize. The only way I knew he felt anything was the way his hand tightened around mine until I felt bone on bone.“Hey, Megan,” I muttered.“Cute,” Megan said softly, eyes flicking to our hands. The corner of her mouth curled. “I see you picked… sweet this time around, Hayden.”“And you still haven’t changed,” Hayden replied, eyes finally meeting hers. “So Summer’s your girlfriend?” Her eyes never left Hayden’s.“She is,” he said, cold.Celeste slid closer to Megan’s elbow, eyes round and empathetic. “Hey, roomie. Rough night. You okay?” My throat shut. I couldn’t tell if the heat in my cheeks was humiliation or relief. I hated the way Megan looked at my boyfriend when hers was just standing there, pretending this was okay.Justin clapped once, and everyone flinched at the sound. “Show’s over,” he announced, voice pleasant. “Mistakes w

☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆Bruce’s teeth clicked loud enough to hear over the bass when Hayden’s fist hit his mouth. He staggered. Blood bloomed down his chin and his eyes went bright and stupid with rage. He smeared the blood with his hand and when he saw it, his lips twisted into a sick smile. Before he could move, Hayden pounced on him. He hit the sticky floor with a dull thud, and Hayden didn’t stop. Fist after fist after fist. It wasn’t a fight anymore—it was an execution.“Stop it!” My scream cracked my throat. “Stop it, please! Hayden!”He didn’t hear me. Not with the loud music and fury in his veins. It was like he wasn’t in the room anymore. He was in his rage, in his darkness, and I was terrified he wouldn’t come back. Terrified I’d watch him kill Bruce with my eyes wide open. The crowd didn’t stop him either. They filmed. They stood there, phones held high, the bass swallowing their laughter. I look around frantically, afraid. Just then, I heard someone bark:“Get him!” The mob sur

☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆“Hey, man,” he said to Hayden, flicking a look at me that lingered too long. “That mess outside? Not cool. Sorry about our guys.” The boy raised his hands. “There’s an empty room upstairs. Left at the top. She can clean up there.” He nodded at me. “You okay?”Hayden’s stare cut him off. “We’re good.”“Right. Sorry.” We moved past him and climbed the stairs. I kept one hand on the banister and one fisted in Hayden’s sleeve like an anchor. At the landing, a hallway stretched. Laughter seeped through cracks in the doors.I smelled bleach and sweat and a lot of weed and sex. We passed a door with a taped-on paper sigil: a slashed circle. “KEEP OUT.” Another door breathed with the sound of someone trying not to cry.We reached the room. Hayden pushed the door open with his shoulder and guided me inside. It was dim, a single lamp in the corner. An unmade bed. A dresser with a cracked mirror. A folded towel on the chair. The air felt recently wiped clean.“Here,” Hayden sai

☆☆SUMMER’S POV☆☆(Earlier: In the dormitory.)“Try it on,” Celeste sang, dangling a black dress she brought out from her closet. “You can't possibly show up at the party in one of those baggy pants and hoodie. Important people will be there. They call it a freshman party, but that’s just the decoy. It’s bigger than that.”“Well, I have some dresses—” “Yeah, I saw them when you were stacking them into the closet like funeral gowns. You don't wanna wear that, silly. We're going to a party, not to church.”She smirked. “Arms up.”“I don’t know if I'll be comfortable—”“It's never about comfort,” she cut in smoothly. “It's about impact. How drop dead gorgeous you’d look.” She slid the dress over me, smoothed it down my hips. Then she stepped back, staring at me like an artist admiring her own masterpiece. “Wow. This looks…even better than I imagined.”I stared at the mirror. The girl looking back at me wasn’t me. Her body was sharp and on display. Her face looked… all made up. She looked

♡♡HAYDEN'S POV♡♡ I headed for the door. Mom’s voice sliced through the silence. “Hayden. Hayden. Get back here.” I didn’t answer. She could scream my name until her throat bled and I still wouldn’t turn. I was going to tell Summer the truth. She needed to know the things her so-called best friend enjoyed doing aside from making promises and placing stupid bets. The next thing I knew, Jake’s hand clamped around my wrist, stopping me in my tracks. I spun, facing him. He let me go. His eyes welled up with unshed tears, and he raked a hand through his hair. “You show up here to talk about Summer, and now you want to exhume ghosts? Fine. Here.” “Jacob!” Mom snapped. “Stop it this instant.” Tears ran down his face. He slammed a palm against his chest, voice splintering. “I killed a woman. I was totally messed up. Didn’t know what I was doing. It was a mistake.” “…” “What? You’re not going to say anything? Isn’t this what you wanted? The truth? Aren’t you happy now that I’ve caved?
