The moment the cold compress touched Anna’s cheek, the sting dulled. The swelling began to recede, and a wave of relief washed over her.

She dipped her gaze, avoiding Gerald’s eyes. She hadn’t expected this—his touch, his concern. It unsettled her more than the pain ever did.

Is this really him? The same man who walks around like he owns the world?

Anna shifted in her seat, the air suddenly thick around her. Whatever kindness Gerald Smith had just shown, she wouldn’t let herself get drawn in. She wasn’t here to play damsel, and certainly not to grow fond of her boss.

“How do you feel now?” Gerald’s voice broke through her thoughts, smooth and clear.

“Better,” she replied softly.

“Alright,” he said with a short nod.

Anna stood up, offering him the makeshift ice pack. “Thank you, sir… I have some files to organize,” she added quickly, her tone clipped, like she couldn't get away fast enough.

“Alright,” he said again. “Bring the Beckley Valley file when it’s noon.”

“I will.”

  • Dear husband I can live without you    Chapter 34: People admire you

Anna stepped into the corridor, her strides cautious and composed, though her heart thudded wildly in her chest. A part of her wished Gerald wasn’t at the office today; the other part craved the sight of him.She imagined him—immaculate in a tailored suit, sharp jawline, those piercing blue eyes that had been haunting her like a song stuck on repeat since yesterday.Provocative. Magnetic. Dangerous. She swallowed hard. She couldn’t let herself feel the rest. Not now.Get a grip, Anna.Taking a deep breath, she swiped her access card and walked into the office.Empty.No Gerald. She sighed, unsure if she was relieved or disappointed. At least she didn’t have to see those hypnotic blue orbs that turned her cheeks warm like a space heater in January.Guess he’s coming in late today, she thought, sliding into her seat. She booted up her laptop and dove straight into work. She organized files, fired off emails, and updated the day’s schedules. Yet, her gaze kept drifting toward Gerald’s va

Chapter 33"You mean he did all that for you?" Vivian's jaw dropped as she adjusted herself properly on the couch, eyes wide with disbelief. She had stopped by Anna’s place on her way home, unable to shake the curiosity eating at her since Anna texted her earlier: Don’t worry about the supplies. I’ve got it covered. That had been vague. Suspiciously vague. And Anna had dodged all her questions over the phone.“Yes,” Anna answered, cheeks tinting with a blush that betrayed more than words ever could.Vivian's eyes darted to the pretty lavender sundress Anna was wearing. “Wait—he got you this too?”Anna nodded again, trying to seem casual but failing miserably.Vivian clapped her hands together. “I knew it. I said it! You might be blind, but I’ve got perfect vision. That man is crushing on you, hard.”Anna rolled her eyes, half-laughing, half-sighing. “He’s just being kind, Viv. He’s my boss—he was looking out for his employee, that’s all.”Vivian gave her a slow, knowing look. “Girl, p

Chapter 32Gerald unbuckled his seatbelt and sat still for a moment. The engine hummed low beneath him, but his thoughts were louder. He exhaled slowly, one hand gripping the wheel, the other resting on his thigh. In all his life, he’d never done what he was about to do—not for any woman. Except one . One he never talks about anymore.“You can do this, Gerald,” he said under his breath. Then he stepped out into the warm California air.The parking lot outside the mall was quiet—blessedly so. No reporters. No flashes. No crowd. That alone was enough to make him sigh in relief. He could’ve sent his driver. That would’ve been the logical thing. But this wasn’t about logic. Not today. The automatic doors slid open, and the moment he stepped inside, heads turned. It was subtle at first—a few sideways glances, a murmur. Then a ripple.“Oh my God, is that Gerald Smith?”“Isn’t he the billionaire CEO?”“What’s he doing here?”Gerald kept walking, ignoring the whispers. His presence always cau

“Andy deserved what happened to him,” Vivian said flatly, wiping her hands with a napkin.Anna’s face tightened into a disapproving frown. She had carefully steered their conversation away from Gerald, and yet here they were again—right back in the thick of uncomfortable truths.“How can you say that?” Anna mumbled, lowering her eyes to her half-finished plate.Vivian didn’t flinch. “I’ll say it again. And again, friend. No offense, but Andy had it coming—for real. For treating you like dirt. For every time he made you cry. For making you feel like you weren’t enough—as a woman, as a wife.”Her tone was sharp, filled with protective anger. The kind only a best friend could summon when remembering the pain someone she cared about had endured. Her fingers curled around her water glass as the memories flared in her mind like wildfire.“And I hope he stays in there,” she muttered under her breath, as if cursing Andy would erase the years of emotional wreckage.“Oh no, Viv,” Anna frowned d

  • Dear husband I can live without you    Chapter 29: Mr Smith....what are trying to...?

Chapter 29Anna’s mouth parted, stunned into silence. Words danced on the tip of her tongue but refused to come out. Her eyes fixated on the vein throbbing at the center of Gerald’s forehead — sharp, pronounced, like a warning. He was angry. Visibly so.But why? she thought. Why would he care? It’s not his business. It was never supposed to be.She hadn’t expected him to notice—let alone confront her about it.Gerald was close. Too close. His scent wrapped around her like a storm of cedarwood and earth. Clean, rich, and distinctly masculine. She could feel the heat radiating from his body, and it unnerved her.Anna inhaled slowly, steadying herself. She hadn’t stood this close to a man in years.“No one hit me,” she said finally, pulling back, removing her face from the cradle of his hand. His touch had been oddly gentle, but her instincts demanded distance.Gerald stared at her like she’d just grown a second head.“Then what are those?” he asked, his tone low and sharp. “You wake up
