CHAPTER 1

A soft smile graced Jasmine’s lips as she stepped out of the elevator leading to her fiancé, Jason’s office.

She carefully held onto the rectangular paper box that housed his favorite chocolate cake, the one she had stayed up all night baking.

Today was his birthday and she planned to surprise him.

“I can’t wait to see the look on his face,” her smile widened and her heart fluttered with excitement as she reached the mahogany door of his office.

She raised her hand to knock, only to freeze when a familiar voice echoed in her ears.

“Jacey, dump that plain Jane already. I’m tired of sneaking around.”

The excitement in Jasmine’s heart was instantly replaced with unease, and her fingers clutched the box tighter as her palms grew sweaty.

It couldn’t be, could it…?

Driven by curiosity, she pushed the door open, barging in.

The cake box slipped from her hands and the cake splattered onto the ground, but she barely noticed it.

Her eyes were too busy taking in the scene before her.

Jason was being straddled by her foster sister, Charlotte, who had nothing but lingerie on. His hands fondled her ass while they were deeply engaged in a passionate kiss.

Jasmine furiously rubbed her eyes to be sure she wasn’t imagining things.

And the moment it became clear that it was completely real, she screamed. “What the hell?!”

Her voice startled them and they instantly pulled away from each other.

Jason pushed Charlotte off him and fumbled to button his shirt while wiping the lipstick that had smeared on his lips.

Charlotte, however, was completely unfazed as she, without bothering to cover up, sat down on the sofa across from Jason’s desk and majestically crossed her legs.

At first Jason’s eyes widened at the sight of Jasmine, but then they narrowed into a hardened gaze.

“Jasmine, how dare you barge into my office without knocking?”

His defensive tone made Jasmine do a double take.

“What?” Her face scrunched up in disbelief. “Is that all you can say after I caught you cheating on me—with my sister?!”

“Caught us cheating? Oh please,” Charlotte interjected with a scoff and an eye roll. “We barely did anything before you rudely interrupted.”

Her demeanor changed to a sultry one as she got up from the sofa and sashayed back to Jason.

Then slowly, she trailed a manicured finger down his chest.

“Now, my poor Jacey is stuck with this boner for the rest of the day,” she pouted as she brushed her palm against the obvious tent in his pants.

“Shit, Char,” Jason groaned and bit his lips as he jerked against her touch. “you’re killing me.”

Fury spiked in Jasmine’s veins at their blatant disregard for her presence.

Without thinking, she crouched down and grabbed a handful of cake from the floor. Then with lightning speed, she hurled it at them.

The cake hit them both in the face, jolting them out of their lewd display.

“How can you both still shamelessly flirt right in front of me?!” Jasmine’s voice was heavy with disgust and frustration.

The lust on Jason’s face faltered as he wiped the cake from his face.

He slid a bit to his mouth with his thumb, and when the sweet flavor hit his tongue, he realized it was his favorite.

Jasmine had baked it for him…like she always did.

His eyes flashed with guilt as he glanced at the remnants of the cake on the floor.

But just as quickly as the guilt came, it vanished, and was replaced with irritation as he glanced up at her.

“This…” he pointed to the cake on the floor with distaste.

“This is why I seek satisfaction elsewhere. It’s just always the same, dull pattern with you. No excitement or thrill whatsoever. It’s fucking suffocating!”

Jasmine’s mouth fell open in shock, but he wasn’t done talking.

“A plain, boring cake is all you get me for my birthday every year, but Charlotte,” he slid an arm around Charlotte’s waist and pulled her closer.

“She surprises me with sexy lingeries and mind blowing office sex. That’s how you keep a man satisfied!”

Jasmine stumbled back as Jason’s unremorseful words pierced through her like a dagger to the heart, and she had to place a hand on the wall to keep herself from falling.

“I…I gave you five years of my life, Jason,” she whispered, her voice cracking despite her attempt to fight back a sob.”

“If I wasn’t enough, why didn’t you just end our relationship? Why lead me on, only to betray me like this?”

Jason opened his mouth to respond, but Charlotte beat him to it as she pulled away from his grip.

“Enough with the act, you pathetic bitch,” She snapped, wiping the cake that had smeared on her face as she marched up to Jasmine.

She stomped on the ruined cake box before jabbing a finger at her chest.

“Don’t pretend you were doing Jason a favour by being with him. We all know you were just clinging to him so you wouldn’t be alone when my parents finally kick you to the curb!

“That’s not true, Charlotte and you know it!” Jasmine shot back, blinking back the hot tears that gathered in her eyes. “My love for Jason was always genuine!”

Charlotte smirked, her eyes glinting with pure satisfaction at Jasmine’s despair.

“Even if that were true,” she smugly crossed her arms. “It still wasn’t enough to keep him. You’re just too unlovable. No wonder your birth parents dumped you in an orphanage.”

“Charlotte!” Jasmine raised her hand to slap Charlotte, but Charlotte caught her wrist mid-air.

“Don’t you dare lay your filthy hands on me,” she sneered as she shoved Jasmine’s hand away. “The truth is a bitter pill to swallow, but it still remains the truth.”

Jasmine tightened her fists so hard, her nails dug into her palm as she tried to control the anger simmering inside her.

“I always considered you my sister, Charlotte,” she shook her head in bitter realization. “But it’s clear you never saw me the same way.”

Before Charlotte had a chance to retort, Jasmine walked past her and moved to stand across from Jason, who had been silently watching their encounter.

She reached for the middle finger of her left hand, and shakily slid the engagement ring off it.

“Since I was never enough for you, there’s no point in us being together.”

Her voice was laced with pain as she threw the ring at him.

“This relationship is over!”

Jason’s expression was unreadable as the ring bounced off his chest and fell to the floor.

Jasmine spun around to face Charlotte again. “This is what you wanted, right?” She forced out a smile. “Congratulations. He’s all yours now.”

Without another word, she wiped her tears and headed towards the door.

Just as she reached for the handle, Jason’s voice stopped her.

“Don’t act rashly, Jasmine,” he warned. “You know you’re nothing without me. Will you really be able to survive this breakup?”

Jasmine stiffened, while Charlotte’s expression flashed with irritation and jealousy as she picked up the hint of worry in Jason’s voice.

“Jacey,” she whined as she walked over to him and tugged at his arm.

“Why are you still bothering about her? She clearly doesn’t deserve you. Just forget about her and focus on us now!”

Charlotte’s words stung Jasmine, but she didn’t glance back, not wanting to give them the satisfaction of seeing her break.

After a sharp exhale, she finally spoke. “I wish you both a very happy life. But remember, Karma always takes her pound of flesh.”

With that, she opened the door, and stormed out, slamming it behind her so hard the walls shook.

Jason’s fists clenched as he stared hard at the door after she left. “You’ll regret this, Jasmine,” he muttered under his breath. “Mark my words.”

CHAPTER 2
When Jasmine got home, she met her adoptive parents, Timothy and Gloria Lane, sitting on the couch in their living room, engaged in what seemed to be a serious conversation. She wiped the tears from her eyes, so they wouldn’t notice she’d been crying. “Good evening, Father. Mother,” she greeted in a small voice, drawing their attention to her. Timothy responded with a curt nod while Gloria’s lips pressed into a thin, disapproving line as she eyed her. “Why didn’t you answer my calls?” She demanded. “Have you suddenly grown wings to think you can now do whatever you want?” Jasmine's brows furrowed, and she quickly pulled out her phone to check if she had a missed call. Sure enough, a notification of five missed calls stared back at her and her eyes widened. She had been so caught up in the aftermath of Jason’s betrayal that she hadn’t noticed her phone was on silent mode. “I’m sorry mom,” she mumbled apologetically. “I didn’t mean to ignore your calls. My phone was—”

CHAPTER 3
Jasmine hurried out of the hotel room before the man could wake up, and she got home some minutes later, only to be greeted with a resounding slap across her face. Her head jerked to the side from the impact, and she clutched her throbbing cheek, stunned as she saw Gloria and Charlotte standing in front of her. “You ungrateful brat!” Gloria’s spat with venom. “How dare you play a fast one on us? Why didn’t you go to Samuel Wilson’s hotel room like you were told?” Jasmine’s mouth quivered as she tried to explain. “M-mom, I-I thought—” “Don’t call me that!” She snapped in revulsion. “I can never be the mother to a cheap whore like you.” “Don’t waste your breath on her, mom,” Charlotte placed a calming hand on Gloria’s shoulder while giving Jasmine a dirty glare. “Aren’t you shameless?” She smacked her teeth distastefully. “It hasn’t even been 24 hours since you broke up with Jacob and you’re already sleeping around.” “I wasn’t sleeping around,” Jasmine defended, her chest

CHAPTER 4
Jason’s jaw dropped as his gaze landed on his uncle, who hadn’t been in the country for years. He didn’t miss how possessively he held Jasmine and a twinge of jealousy ignited in his chest. “U-uncle Asher, it’s been so long,” he masked his jealousy with a strained smile. “When did you come back?” Asher completely ignored him as his gaze was still fixed on Jasmine. “It’s you,” he mumbled in recognition. Jasmine’s cheeks tinged red with embarrassment. Shit. Why did he have to remember her? And why did he also have to be Jason’s uncle? “Uh…” she stuttered as she tried to come up with a response. But before she could, Jason’s parents, Richard and Laura Wayne, approached the scene, having been alerted by his outburst. They shared displeased glances with each other as they saw Asher, but hid it with fake smiles. “Asher, little brother, you finally decided to return after being away for so long,” Richard acknowledged in a fake cheery voice. “What’s it been…seven years?” “It’

CHAPTER 5
Everyone was left speechless as Asher’s announcement hung in the air. Jasmine herself was extremely confused as to why he would say such a thing, and she leaned in closer to him. “What are you doing?” She whispered incredulously and tried to pull her hand away, but he held onto it more firmly, refusing to let go as he glanced at her. “Just trust me,” he softly assured before returning his attention to everyone else. Jason managed to pick up his jaw that had fallen to the floor after a few seconds. “Uncle, y-you can’t be serious!” He blurted in bewilderment. “Jasmine was my fiancé up until yesterday. How can you be getting married to her?!” “Surely this is some sort of prank right?” Charlotte added, her voice dripping with contempt towards Jasmine. “You can’t possibly want someone as cheap as her.” Asher’s lips twitched as he enjoyed their reactions. He was so close to laughing, but he kept his expression controlled. “I’ve made my decision, and I owe no one any explanations.

CHAPTER 6
Charlotte was stunned by Jason’s sudden outburst and a frown appeared on her features. “Jason, what has gotten into you?” She demanded as she tugged at his arm. “Why do you care so much about Jasmine being with your uncle?” Her words flew over Jason’s head as he yanked his arm free from her grip. And all he saw was red as he stormed towards Asher and Jasmine. “This relationship will not happen!” He spat and attempted to grab Jasmine. But Asher swiftly stepped forward, shielding her behind him. His eyes narrowed as he glared at Jason’s seething figure. “Stand down!” Jason’s fists tightened as he ignored Asher and sneered at Jasmine. “You’ll pay for humiliating me like this!” “Humiliating you?” Jasmine scoffed as she stepped away from behind Asher, finally mustering the confidence to speak up for herself. “If anyone was humiliated here it’s me. I can’t believe I ever fell for an egoistical and conceited person like you.” Jasmine’s words snapped off the last shred of restrain

CHAPTER 7
Jasmine sighed and chewed on her lips as she wrestled with the decision before her. A part of her wanted to say no and follow through with her plan of leaving the city and starting afresh. But the other part, the one fueled by pain and anger, desperately craved to make Charlotte and Jason pay for what they had done to her. Still, what was the point of dwelling on their painful betrayal when it would be easier to move on? She pressed her lips into a firm line and met Asher’s patient, yet expectant gaze. “I appreciate your offer, Mr. Wayne, but I’ll pass,” her voice was polite, yet resolute. Asher’s brows arched in surprise, but she didn’t give him a chance to interrupt as she continued. “I don’t want revenge. I just want to leave this city. There’s nothing left for me here.” Saying the words aloud made them feel even more real…and more devastating. No family. No friends. No relationship. Nothing. Asher was quiet for a moment as he observed the slight downturn of her lip

CHAPTER 8
Jasmine took a deep breath, her fingers playing with the lace of the knee-length, white skater dress she wore as she stared at her reflection in the full length mirror. Her long blonde hair was plaited into a french braid, and her face was covered in minimal makeup that accentuated her delicate features. She didn’t feel quite like herself, but she had to admit, she looked…beautiful. She felt beautiful. “Ma’am, I must say, you look very stunning!” The stylist who had gotten her ready gushed beside her. “Mr Wayne won’t be able to take his eyes off you throughout the party.” A faint blush crept up Jasmine’s cheeks at the thought of Asher’s attention being on her all night. She could already imagine him staring deep into her soul with his intense blue eyes. It had been five days since she’d signed the marriage contract with him, and tonight, he was hosting a party to commemorate their marriage. She subconsciously twirled the 24 karat diamond ring on her finger as her ner

CHAPTER 9
The question hit Jasmine like a slap to the face and her face slightly paled as she could feel the eyes of the numerous reporters on her. The flashes from the cameras trained on her did nothing to quell her rising anxiety, and she instinctively tightened her grip on Asher’s hand to steady herself. “Don’t let them get to you. Just breathe,” Asher stroked her hand with his thumb in a comforting manner. Jasmine closed her eyes and inhaled sharply as she focused on Asher’s calming strokes. “…Just hold your head high and let your confidence shine through…” The stylist's words from earlier floated through her head and that was all she needed to regain her composure. When she reopened her eyes, her demeanor was more relaxed, and she squared her shoulders as she stared right at the reporter who threw the question at her. “I don’t know where you heard that from, but it isn’t true.” she countered calmly. Somehow her eyes travelled across the room, and she caught sight of Jason and Ch

CHAPTER 10
Asher’s voice made Charlotte and Jason freeze like deers caught in headlights. All attention had now shifted towards them, including the reporters and their cameras. They shifted uncomfortably under the weight of so many eyes on them. Asher turned to Garett and ordered, “Repeat what you just confessed. This time loud enough for everyone to hear.” Garett’s voice trembled as he rose to his feet and shot a finger at Charlotte’s direction. “She paid me to defame Mrs. Jasmine’s character!” The crowd gasped at the revelation and Charlotte’s face drained of all color. Her eyes darted around as she scrambled for a way to get out of the situation. “That’s not true!” She denied immediately after regaining her composure. “I don’t even know who that lowlife is!” “Enough with the damn lies!” Asher retorted, his voice thick with irritation. Then he turned to Garrett. “Do you have any proof?” Garrett quickly nodded and took out his phone. “Here it is,” he mumbled as he showed Asher
