ADELINE

“Who is she?” Semion’s fingers twitched as he traced it on my arm discreetly. We were still greeting guests and we couldn't be too close. However, our eyes were on the lady, Davina’s unknown friend who left in a Maybach.

“She refused to say.” My eyes dimmed, my nails pinching down on my palms as I itched to know who she was. I knew everything about Davina, even down to the cheap underwear she would rather put on but this friend seemed to be a mystery.

I had all her friends, under my belt and those days, I enjoyed seeing her go after the friends who abandoned her. She would cry and beg them to take her back, even do crazy things I whispered to her at bedtime to get them back.

Eventually, they were all scared of staying in the same place as her. She would sit at the cafeteria, alone, the free time stretching into chatters of people on other tables but then it would be silence around her.

I was her saving grace, extending a crying shoulder and encouraging her to make new friend

DAVINAI froze, my heart plummeting and I quickly scoured Adeline’s face. Her eyes were probing, sizing me from top to bottom. My back trickled with cold sweat, afraid that she was really going to recognize me. “I know Davina.” I finally replied, my voice a bit muffled due to the mask, coupled with the soreness it had after being in marathon classes for days. “Oh…” She came to stand beside me, her scent sweet and calming. She knew to pick the rights things, to get people closer to her, trust her and succumb to her. However, that calming scent quickly turned into a twisted vine, along with the stench coming from the body. I took a step back, scrunching my nose. She noticed immediately, her gaze flickering to the body. “You know, the police didn't do their job of handling the body well before it was sent to us.” She whispered, her head tilted to the side. “But I am sure it’s more than that.”“Her body shouldn't decay like this. Right?” Her eyes dimmed curiously. “How would I know?”

DAVINA“I don’t…think so.” I shook my head, the thought of my memorial service when I was still very much alive scarred me. Why would I want to watch my supposed dead body in a coffin, while the Williams family grieved like they lost loved one?“Alright,” Maria responded. “You are done for the day, rest well.”She turned to leave, leaving me to navigate back to my bedroom. I sat on the large bed, my fingers itching to check my phone for any news article or posting about my memorial. I dreaded putting on the TV, so as not to see myself plastered on the screen. In that moment, my phone dinged and I swiped my hand on the bed, picking it up. A message, or even an acknowledgment of me, of my existence right now would be appreciated. However, what I saw was the news article I wanted to stay away from. A news broadcast, one that shook me to my core. Adeline had posted a tribute to me, with several photos of me playing around the Williams mansion. Some of the photos showed me as a happy gi

  • Disgraced Ex-wife; Reborn With Fire   The Average Student

DAVINATwo days later…By noon, I was stuffed, my body ached and my head felt too heavy. I had always been the average student, not given enough opportunity to try to ace higher. Adeline was always the better one. The bright student. Now, I was in the mix of it all. Defense classes by 5am and business classes by 8am. Followed by behavioral and etiquette classes that spanned the rest of the day. It had only just been two days, and my back was already on fire from being hit by a wooden fan. My back was straighter, just by thinking about Mrs. Bailey, the etiquette coach. She would chop off my head if she ever caught me slacking. I sat there, in a private study assigned to me but it didn't quite feel like mine. I wasn't the old Davina Williams anymore but I wasn't Lucille King. I was in between, fighting the new identity that was being bestowed on me. Lucille King reminded me of everything I was not, in the most heart-wrenching way possible. She reminded me of how I had wasted my life

  • Disgraced Ex-wife; Reborn With Fire   A Light They Dimmed

NATHANIELI stood before the floor-to-ceiling window that overlooked the night streets of Manhattan. In the Shaw Powers 60-storey headquarters, I could see lights blinking and shining down the streets. However, my office was a stark contrast. Dimly lit, overwhelmed with the burden of several documents that determined people’s destinies and companies. All day, I signed away deals, denied investments, and partnerships. My pen carried power but even at that, I was unable to protect the one person I cherished the most.Lucille King. My life was just as desolate before she came in, smiling genuinely like no heiress had done to me. She didn't want my money, power like her family had pushed her to get. She only wanted my heart, my soul, and even if she wanted more, I would have given it to her. I would will my entire existence and achievement to her if she as much requested them. However, she was too calm, too easygoing, and contented with the life she had, a breath of fresh air different

  • Disgraced Ex-wife; Reborn With Fire   Soaring Higher

ADELINEThe Miles mansion was bustling with laughter, lights shining on the faces of family members who should be grieving. It was a mini-party to celebrate my pregnancy and Mother Miles had made sure it was an intimate, welcoming atmosphere for me. I smiled all through, seeing the three-step congratulatory cake and flowers delivered to me by Semion that morning, accompanied by a love note that made my cheeks hurt from smiling too much. This was just for my family and the Miles family to celebrate me. We were complete, no insolent outsider, an ungrateful bystander who was just there to leech off of us.“Do you like what you see?” Mother Miles appeared from behind, her hand lay gently on my shoulder and then Semion appeared by my side too. He rubbed my belly as he pulled in to place a soft kiss on my cheek. “Thank you, for welcoming me.” I hugged her, by the side while I placed my palm on Semion’s hand. “You deserve it and more!” Mother Miles smiled, her eyes thinning. “You gave th
