Maya

My apartment felt unnaturally quiet when I got back from Giuseppe's funeral. The silence pressed against my ears like cotton, broken only by the click of my heels against hardwood and the soft thud of my purse hitting the counter.

Fuck, I needed a drink.

I kicked off my shoes, not caring where they landed, and made straight for the cabinet where I kept the expensive whiskey Alex had brought over weeks ago. The amber liquid burned satisfyingly on its way down, a welcome distraction from the weight of tomorrow's board meeting.

Everyone at the funeral had looked at me with the same expression—calculating how Giuseppe's death affected their position. Even the fucking priest had managed to throw a glance at Daniel during the service, probably wondering if he should hedge his bets.

TroyHarrison swiped through his phone again, then turned it to show me a video. The same beach, the same couple, but now with sound. Maya's soft gasps, Alex's whispered endearments, the unmistakable sounds of moaning. How that had been possible, I had no idea. The quality in it was sickening."Daniel has the Henderson files," Harrison said conversationally, as if we were discussing the weather. "The ones that were stolen from the foundation offices."I stared at him, the full horror of the situation crystallizing. "It was you? You broke into our offices.""Not personally. I have people for that." He set the phone down, screen still displaying that damning image. "Here's what's going to happen, Troy. You're going to take responsibility for the theft."

TroyI still remember the weight of Julian's hand on my thigh. The cool leather of the club booth against my back. The bourbon burning pleasantly down my throat. It's strange, the details that stick with you when your life is about to implode."Should we go somewhere quieter?" he'd asked, his voice dropping to something intimate despite the club's pounding bass.I'd said yes. Of course I'd said yes. When a guy who looks like that—all sharp angles and expensive tailoring—wants to take you home, you don't think twice. At least, I didn't.Stupid. So fucking stupid. His apartment was in Tribeca. Minimalist décor, floor-to-ceiling windows, the kind of place that screams money without be

DanielThe club's lighting cast everyone in a flattering glow, softening the harsh lines of Robert Kingston's face as he took the seat across from me. His eyes looked tired, the funeral's strain evident despite his perfect posture. We'd both come straight from the cemetery, not bothering to change out of our mourning attire."That was quite a turnout," Robert said, lifting the glass of scotch the server had silently placed before him. "The entire industry, practically."I adjusted my cuffs, the motion automatic after years of boardroom habits. "Giuseppe always did enjoy commanding attention."Robert swirled his drink, ice clinking against crystal. "For what it's worth, I'm sorry for your loss. Whatever his faults, Giuseppe was a great man. A titan that pushed the rest of us to do better."

Black umbrellas dotted the cemetery like ravens, business Manhattan gathered to pay respects to one of its kings. I stood at the head of Giuseppe's casket, playing a role I'd only inherited just few months ago: the grieving granddaughter-in-law. The primary mourner. The heir.Rain spattered against the mahogany casket, beading on its surface before sliding off like tears. I felt the stares of the crowd burning into my back—the outsider who'd somehow usurped the rightful heir. Daniel should've been standing where I was. The blood grandson. The one who'd grown up in Giuseppe's shadow, who'd spent his life waiting for this moment.Instead, he stood fifteen feet away, jaw tight, eyes fixed on the casket."We gather today to celebrate the life of Giuseppe Antonio Russo," the priest intoned, his voice carrying over the patter of rain against umbrellas. "A man who built empires from nothing but determination and vision."Vincent stood at my right, a black umbrella held steadily over both of

Maya"That's none of your business.""Excuse me?" The shock of her response snapped me out of my spiraling thoughts. "You ambush me in a parking lot with life-altering information about my friend, and I don't get to know why?""I have my reasons." She looked away, staring out the window at the empty park. "They don't concern you.""Bullshit." I released the steering wheel and turned fully toward her. "Everything about this concerns me. You and Daniel have been working together to destroy me for years. Why the sudden change of heart? What game are you playing now?""It's not a game!" She turned back, color rising in her hollow cheeks. "Not everything is about you, Maya. God, you've always been so self-centered.""Self-centered?" I laughed, the sound harsh even to my own ears. "That's rich coming from you. The woman who slept with her sister's husband. Who tried to steal my designs, my career, my entire life.""I was there first!" Fiona's voice rose, cracking with emotion. "You're the on
