Today is cheer spirit day. It's an event where the entire school community comes together to show school spirit through activities like themed dress-up days. Its primary goal is to boost school spirit and create a positive environment for students and staff.
This year, we're to dress as our inner selves-- the person we believe we truly are inside. It could be a fictional character you believe shares a similarity with, a family member, or some celebrity. I attend school wearing my usual outfit. A long-sleeved blouse, jeans, and a pair of sneakers. Not in the mood to participate.
Two seventh-graders stormed past me, chasing each other, one attired as a pitbull dog and the other as a ragdoll cat.
Some students don't take the cheer spirit day dress-up seriously, and just a joke.
I met Bryson and his girlfriend Elena along the way as I was heading to my class.
Bryson is attired in a bluish-white costume adorned with fins, and in his hands, he had a triton. Elena chose to match his outfit.
"I thought mermen and mermaids had tails," I said after I stopped to greet Bryson.
Bryson smiled and said, "We're a different type of mermaid that is mostly connected to land than the waters," he said, and I smiled.
"What are you dressed as?" Elena then went on to ask, and I knew she didn't care to know and was trying to play nice just for Bryson's sake.
"Just the plain old person I am inside. What you see is what you get. There's nothing special about me," I said as a joke.
She laughed, and it hurt that I truly was plain and simple. I wish there were more about me. Fun and not clumsy and awkward, I guess.
"It seems someone chose not to join the event as well," mentioned Elana as they walked away. I see who she was referring to, Connor.
He was attired in a dark blue shirt, black pants, and black shoes, styled with a long black coat.
I watched him while recalling the painful memory of yesterday. He caught me watching him, and my body jerked as his eyes went to mine as if I was electrocuted by his stare. He then disappeared behind a door leading to the back of the school.
I followed him without hesitation. When I'm at the back of the school, I don't see him until I look up to see him sitting way up on top of one of the school's large water tanks.
I was stunned at how fast he'd gotten up there.
When our eyes met and I felt caught for following him, I said, "Students aren't allowed back here."
He chuckled, then jumped off the tank. I watched him as he landed on his feet.
"Is that your way of trying to speak to me?" He said with an unsmiling face as he stood before me.
I stretched my neck to look at him and at how little I was in comparison to him. Connor is 6 feet and 7 inches, and I'm 5 feet, to be exact.
"Yes," I lied.
"You can't lie to a werewolf; I can hear your heartbeat increasing when you do," he said
I was frightened by his response.
"I'm sorry," I apologized.
I'm obsessively and madly in love with Connor. I loathed the lie I'd just told him. I want to be good to him in every way.
"Now that's the truth," he stared into my eyes.
As I returned his stare, "What did I tell you to do?" he then asked.
"I can't do it. You're like the only warmth in my cold life," I said, shaking my head.
"Don't you get that I'm saving you? If Kara finds out you know about our kind, she won't hold back in seeing to it that the law is done in killing a human who knows about our existence."
His eyes glowed like the sun as he warned me.
"You won't allow her to kill me because you feel the same for me, too, Connor." I reached out to touch his face.
He moved quickly, creating a strong wind that blew my hair backwards.
I looked around the area searching for him. It was as if he were never there.

In the late evening, my aunt loaned me her car to pick up a chair at a carpenter shop near the woods. The chair once belonged to my grandmother, whom I never knew, and she wanted to bring it back home with her as a reminder.
Some sawdust got on my face as the carpenter was finishing it. As the carpenter carried the chair to the trunk of the car. I went to check my face in the side mirror. I spotted an image of Connor watching me from the woods. I quickly spun around not to see him, and I'm sure it was not me thinking I'd seen him and that he was really there watching me.
The next day, at the end of school, I wrote a small note and shoved it under the bottom of his locker.
As I arrived home, I opened my door to see Connor in my room, standing before my window. He turned around as soon as I entered.
His honey-bronzed skin made my dull room brighter with his radiant beauty.
As if I'm in a trance, I watched him as he gravely walked towards me.
"I'll never go on a date with you. Just give up," he said, crumpling the note I'd slid to his locker. I'd written asking him out on a date this Saturday.
I watched as my note fell to my cream carpet and then back at him.
Angry, he spun around, walking away, and as he was about to leap through my window, I said, "I saw you at the carpenter watching me."
He paused for a while and then leaped through the window, running through the woods faster than lightning.
"Do you think your family will like me?" I asked worriedly as we were at the front door."They'll try to tolerate you and won't kill you for my sake," Connor smiled and said.Shockingly, I looked at him."Please tell me you're playing with me right now?" I asked, scared."Come on, little human, they're waiting, and werewolves do not have any patience." Connor held my hand. The moment we entered the house, I saw his entire family standing in the hallway waiting for us. I felt unbelonging and ugly. They were so beautiful, and their warm skin gleamed a golden glow, compared to my pale skin, which makes me look like I'm always sick.My heart raced at the sight of them. I tried to calm it down, knowing they could hear it and also sense my nervousness at their presence. As Connor had warned me outside, I immediately started receiving cold stares from everyone.Firstly, Connor introduced me to his father, Alpha Valor Flaxborough. I extended a hand to shake his.As he's about to shake it with
Ever since Kara had found out about Connor and me, she'd been constantly giving me a death stare at school.I immediately looked away from her, terrified as I went into my locker.Receiving Connor's love, I had obtained the worst enemy: a werewolf that hated my guts for dating her kind. After the horrible incident I had with Kara in the hallway, I tried to avoid meeting her there at all costs. I exited the bathroom, walking as fast as I could along the hallway back to my second session. As I'm about to walk past the exact place she'd stopped me before bringing me to the top of the roof to throw me off. I froze at an inhuman touch."Will you go out on a date with me this Saturday?" I heard Connor behind me, and I'm no longer terrified. I spun around, smiling to meet his eyes."Yes," I answered."Great, I'll pick you up at noon." He was beaming back at me.We stood staring into each other's eyes, remaining to smile. The school bell rang, and I loathed that it did, disrupting my time wi
Bryson isn’t at school. Thankfully, I don’t have to sit with Elena and his friends, especially after what had happened to her today.Elena stood up from her lunch table.“Whosoever throws the bucket of mess unto me. I promise that when I find out who you are, I will ruin your life, and you will wish you were never born!” She shouted angrily.Shortly, I got a text message from Connor. I opened it to read.Bear, coyote filth, and skunk pee, she should say —he’d texted what was inside the bucket he'd thrown on Elena.I burst out into laughter.Immediately, I stopped laughing when I noticed Elena, who was now staring at me furiously. My heart started racing as she began to march toward my table, quickly.“Who are you laughing at, loser?” She asked with great fury, looking down at me, frozen from fear in my seat.I became silent, too afraid to speak.“It must be you who had done it to me,” she then said and extended a hand to grab me by the hair. I closed my eyes, scared, and I opened them
I woke up to the aroma of fried egg wafting into my room.I came out of bed, descending the stairs into the kitchen.I smiled when I saw Connor at the stove making a sandwich: adding fried egg, lettuce, slices of tomato, and finally a slice of cheese. He lifted his head, smiling back at me."Breakfast is ready." He poured out a cup of tea, placing it next to the sandwich on top of the kitchen counter.Immediately, I went to sit in the counter chair.I picked up the sandwich, ready to take a bite, but I became nervous to see Connor watching me."Aren't you going to eat as well?" I asked, beaming shyly."I prefer to watch you eat," he said.Nervously, I took the smallest bite, trying to eat as decently as I could before him.I stopped chewing as Connor wiped away melted cheese from my lips."Remember, I have a surprise for you," he said, licking the cheese from his finger.I stared hard at him, shocked at what he'd just done. I've never imagined a day Connor would eat cheese from my lip
Connor brought me to my mom's house. He got out of the vehicle to open the door for me."Do you want me to follow you inside?" he asked, holding the door for me to come out.No, I shook my head and stepped out.Forced to remember everything bad that happened here. Every painful word, hateful stare, and being ignored. I wish I'd told Connor yes when I got inside.Entering my room, all of those painful memories vanished when I went in to see Connor."I couldn't let you be here alone," he said, and I was glad he didn't listen to me.I didn't have many clothes, so it was an easy pack for me.Connor dashed through the window to meet me outside while I hurried back down the stairs.I met my aunt along the way. She was surprised to see me with my suitcase."Where are you going?" she asked."Somewhere that I don't feel like crap," I responded, upset. She ran behind me as I exited the house to see Connor standing next to his black Jeep.As soon as Connor saw me, he came to take the suitcase."
Out of nowhere, I felt warm arms wrapped around me, and I was backed into the forest extremely fast.I hugged my savior, sobbing hard.Connor held my shoulder, prying me away from his tall and sturdy body.He sees my burst lip."Who did this to you?" Angrily, his eyes began to glow a bright yellow."My mother." More tears came down as I responded."She will pay for what she has done," he said in a monstrous voice that scared me.He started to turn away from me."No, Connor," I stopped him, holding him by the hand.As I did, he never turned to look at me, consumed in anger."Though my mom is verbally abusive towards me. It was the first time she had hit me because she was drunk. Please don't hurt her for my sake," I pleaded.Although it was the first, her hurtful words thrown at me felt the same today as her hit.As much as I didn't want Connor to harm my mom. I was more concerned about him. He'd already sacrificed his true identity to save me and also broken a forbidden rule by being
