“No!” I firmly disagree after my parents said that I needed to marry into a family that supports our clan. The whole Azaria clan decided this without even asking my opinion regarding the matter to strengthen their connection to that family, and to be honest, it is not really unexpected.
But things are a little different now, and I will not just agree to tie myself to some dude I don’t even know.
“I know what you are trying to say,” I said. “It is my responsibility to do my duty as part of our family. But please forgive me because this is one thing that I cannot do. At least, not yet.”
The Kingdom of Hexoria is what our country is called.
It is just a small country that was surrounded by huge waves coming from the southern part of the Pacific Ocean.
A lot of big countries invaded this land for almost a hundred years until it finally got its independence. And since then, it has been governed by my clan, the Azarias, right from the leadership of my great-grandfather, who was the first king of this country.
One of the cultures that we adopted from our ancestors is that the woman in our family is treated as weak, fragile, and doesn’t have special skills that will help the government. So, our only role here is to marry into a family.
Our voice in the family is not given any importance by the council, and we are being underestimated by the people around us.
And one of the traditions in our family is that a princess like me is just a tool to gather additional allies that will support them using a marriage.
They made us think that the only thing that we could do to help our family maintain its influence around the country was to marry the man of their choice.
So, arranged marriage is common for us. But I never agreed to that kind of settlement.
For me, two people should love each other first before entering a relationship. And they should understand each other before they enter the lifelong commitment called marriage.
This is not just a political way to seal the union of two families. Marriage is more sacred and shouldn’t be rushed.
Besides, I don’t agree that this country is still underestimating women, despite other countries finally being given the recognition that women are equal to men.
I took a deep breath and looked straight into my father’s eyes. “I didn’t choose to be part of this family, but I am grateful that you are my parents,” I stated. “And I know that I haven’t made you proud since I haven’t done anything in my life. But…” I took a deep breath again. “...entering a marriage without love is contrary to my opinion. I still believed that we should at least be given time to meet and get to know each other.”
“Did you forget that your mother and I didn’t love each other when we got married?” my father asked. “But when we started our marriage, we slowly got to know each other, and that developed our love for each other.”
“But not everyone is as lucky as you are,” I rebutted. “Cloven and Allucia also entered into an arranged marriage, right? And they both admit that despite being together for years, they still haven’t made themselves love each other. And now, they are starting to consider getting a divorce rather than making each other suffer even more.”
“But, child…”
I sighed. “I am not saying that I will turn my back on my responsibility as one of the princesses of this country,” I said before my mother could continue what she was going to say. “I just want you to give me the same freedom that you have to Miracle.”
“What?”
“I want to become independent,” I firmly said. “I want to live as a normal citizen outside the palace so I can learn how to stand up for myself. I want to be like Miracle, who manages to prove that we, the women of the Azaria Clan, are not just a tool for a political purpose. I want to become a good and reliable princess of this country. Without anyone controlling me.”
They didn’t say anything. Dad was just silently staring at me as if he was thinking of something, while Mom was just waiting for his decision.
“Tell me, Clea Mair,” Dad broke his silence. “If you manage to do what you are saying and you prove that you are a good and reliable princess of this country, are you going to ask for your claim to inherit the throne?”
I immediately shook my head to deny his suspicion. “I never even thought of competing for the throne, Dad,” I said. “I just want to open your eyes that women in this era shouldn't be looked down on by anyone. I want to prove that the strength, intelligence, and strategy in life that you can see in a man, you will also be able to see in any woman.”
He became silent again.
I know that what I am trying to do is not acceptable with our clan’s beliefs, but if I continue to stay silent in this matter, nothing will change. They will always control my life, and women will not be able to prove their worth to this country.
My father sighed. “If that is the case, then I will let you do what you want.”
My eyes widened because of his decision. “R-really?”
He nodded. “It looks like you already made up your mind and you will not stop until you get what you want,” he said. “So, it is better to just agree rather than make you mad at me.”
I actually expected that it would be a long discussion since this topic is sensitive to our clan. Especially now that they are trying to marry me off to someone.
I guess it was the right decision for me to tell them everything I wanted so we could discuss it as soon as possible.
“You are allowed to go out of the palace and live as a normal citizen,” he added. “I can support you with your house, but you have to find your job to support your other expenses, such as food and bills, since you want to become independent.”
“Doesn’t that go too much—”
“Don’t worry, mother.” I smiled. “That is more than enough for me.”
“I also want to make it clear to you that you are not allowed to use any privilege you have as part of the royal family,” Dad said. "Aside from emergency purposes, like when your life is in danger. Are we clear on that?”
I nodded. “You can count on me.”
He smiled and stood up. “Then, you are free to go, my young child. Accept the freedom that I am giving to you,” he said. “And I will always pray for you to get everything you want to prove something for yourself.”
Clea Mair’s POVTo make up for my deal with Hector, I did what he wanted. I faced our parents and heard what they wanted to say. And just like what I expected, they already manipulated what really happened to me. I guess they heard from Miracle that my memories of that day were still blurry, so they took advantage of that.I just nodded to them, making my response as little as possible. And it was only a brief conversation because Miracle said that the doctor advised me to take more rest once I got home.I left the throne hall without even saying goodbye, and instead of going to my room, I went straight to Hector’s office. When I arrived, I saw him lying on the sofa in the corner of his office. In front of him is a center table that was filled with a lot of papers.“I thought you would take a lot of time there.” He got up and pointed at the paper in front of him. “Those papers contain the information that you want to know.”I immediately went there and read the papers. And each piece
Clea Mair’s POV“Andrel!”I opened my eyes, and the first thing that I saw was a while ceiling that was not familiar to me.I immediately panic, shivering from fear as I remember that Andrel and I were in trouble.I was about to get up, but then I realized that there were a lot of tubes and wires attached to my body. That was also when the pain all over my body registered in my brain. And I could even lift my arms despite my effort. What the hell happened? Why am I like this?I want to scream for help, but my throat was too dry, and I felt nauseous.Shit! This is not the time for me to think about myself. I know Andrel was not in a good situation.I winced when I heard a loud bang not far from me. Then, the whole room suddenly lit up so much that it almost blinded me, so I immediately closed my eyes. I want to complain, but I couldn’t even form a word, so I can only groan in protest.“Clea… Clea…”I felt someone hold my hand while calling my name repeatedly.I want to respond, but I c
Clea Mair’s POVLeon was right. As soon as we arrived in downtown, we immediately saw the crowd in every establishment around, even though the sun had already set. Every store has a lot of customers, and most of them are families or couples.I guess my colleagues were right.Christmas is something that is best celebrated with someone you love.No matter where I look, I can see the smile in every person. They were laughing, and they were being silly with each other, not even caring about the others.Ah, this should be what a normal family does for Christmas Day.My family is surely the abnormal one. Most of the high-end restaurants were located on the west side of downtown, so we went straight there. And since there were a lot of choices, we voted on what to eat, and the majority of us wanted to have meat. This is not far from The SweetHeart.Despite what happened to Asper, the founder of that sweet shop. It is still operational, and their recipe doesn’t change just because their main
Clea Mair’s POVWe enjoyed Christmas Eve with so much fun and joy. Together with good food that Andrel’s friends made so much effort to cook and prepare, they also serve good liquor with it.And to be honest, I never imagined the laid-back atmosphere that we had last night.Well, ever since I met his friends, they were always serious and never even showed a smile. They said that it was because they are responsible for Andrel’s safety, so they can’t just lower their guard. But their attitude last night changed. I guess maybe because there is already ensured the safety of our location and there is no sign of any danger since we got here, so they started relaxing, and Andrel let them enjoy the night. They are not just some employees from last night, they are really Andrel’s friends who just celebrated a holiday with him despite being away from his family. They drown themselves with hard liquor, and I get to make fun of them without minding anything because Andrel got my back.I really wi
Clea Mair’s POV“Merry Christmas!”I immediately turned on the Christmas lights around the tree that we set up yesterday. We rushed this, so it was not that great, but celebrating the holiday is not complete without it.We also bought some presents and everything we needed for our food. Though Andrel and I only handle most of the gift shopping. Other things were handled by Andrel’s friends.Of course, I made sure I got the best gift for Andrel. And as for him, well, he only bought something just for me. He didn’t bother to look for presents for his friends. He said that they already have everything they need, and he will just send them monetary gifts, which is what they like the most. That is why I decided to buy one for everyone. It is not much since I still don’t have any idea what they might like, but I made an effort to give them something that they can use for a long time. And it might sound petty, but Andrel doesn’t like the idea. That is why he was giving death glares to his fr
Clea Mair’s POVIn the situation that I am facing, I don’t want to do anything else aside from pulling Miracle’s hair out, who was sitting pretty beside our parents.I don’t even hide my frustration in front of them and just glare at my sister because I don’t really appreciate her effort to bring our parents here just to ruin my vacation. She clearly knows that they were the main reason why I wanted to stay in Yain City and celebrate the holiday here. I even made her swear to keep my location a secret and not to tell anyone about this plan.“Can you please hear us first before you glare at me?” Miracle said. “They just wanted to say something important to both of you.”“What?” I raised my eyebrows to them, without hiding my disdain for their presence here. “Are you here to talk to him straight because you can’t convince me to cut my ties with—” I was cut off with what I was about to say when Andrel put his hand on my mouth.“Will you please calm down?” he softly asked. “Let them say w
Clea Mair’s Pov“Wait… what?” My eyes widened when I heard what the person I was talking to on the phone said. “Mr. Henan will personally facilitate our meeting for our application to rent a warehouse and dock in his port?”“Yes, Clea,” Iona, one of the Henan Shipping Company, said. I met her at on
Clea Mair’s Pov“So?” I raised my eyebrows at Miracle as soon as she got inside the house that she was renting. She handed me the key to this house and let me go home first before her since she was still busy with her work at SweetHeart and I had been waiting for her in the living room to confront
Clea Mair’s Pov“Nice to meet you, Mister Andrel Henan.” I offered my hand in front of him. “Thank you for letting this meeting happen despite your sudden change of schedule.”To be honest, they could have canceled this meeting, but they still put a lot of effort into bringing me here just for us t
