Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Holly
The ambulance finally arrived to take me to the healing center.

The bumpy ride sent excruciating pain through my body. Whenever the ambulance jolted, pain shot through the wounds in my abdomen.

I kept drifting in and out of consciousness, only to black out from the pain moments later.

Whenever I managed to open my eyes, Kevin was always on the phone with Wayne, asking how Lina was doing.

By the time I was wheeled into the operating room, I could barely hear anything anymore. All I heard was the healer cutting away my blood-stained clothes. Then she inhaled sharply.

"The patient's wounds are contaminated with silver dust, and her internal organs are ruptured. We need to operate on her now!"

The operation lasted a whole six hours. When I finally came to, I found the hospital room empty. No one was there beside me.

Every time I breathed, pain tore through my body. I took out my phone and hesitated for a long time before sending Wayne a message. "How's Lina doing?"

Wayne replied almost immediately. "She's in stable condition now."

My fingers hovered over the screen for a few moments before I typed out another message. "Could you come see me? I'm in the hospital room."

Wayne replied curtly, "Sure."

I waited in the hospital room for a very long time. The healer had already changed my dressings twice, and she was about to change them for the third time.

The words slipped out before I even realized what I was asking. "Where are Kevin and Wayne?"

The healer paused for a moment. "Ms. Muhl won't stop crying, so Captain Green and Deputy Aston are with her. Your injuries are pretty severe, so you need proper treatment. Otherwise, you may not make it through the next few days."

I stared at the hospital room door, feeling hollow inside. So, I had almost died.

It wasn't until evening that Wayne finally came in, but Kevin wasn't with him. He said gently, "Lina had a terrible scare, so she couldn't be left alone. She's doing better now, so I came to see you."

My lips were cracked as I said softly, "I was in surgery for six hours."

Wayne glanced at the monitor and said calmly, "You've always been in good shape. One surgery isn't going to hurt you."

I wanted to reach for his sleeve, but the moment I moved, pain shot through my abdomen. My hand fell heavily back onto the bed.

"Wayne, my internal organs were badly damaged. I almost died on the operating table."

Wayne scowled in annoyance. "Well, you made it, didn't you?"

My heart sank. Back then, Wayne would panic even over a tiny cut on my hand. He would have me lie on the bed while he bandaged it himself.

That day, I had barely escaped death, and all he could say was, "Well, you made it, didn't you?"

The healer came in to check on me, her expression solemn. "You can't get yourself all worked up now."

Distracted, Wayne hummed in response, his mind still on Lina. "How's Lina doing?"

Before the healer could even respond, Lina's cries drifted in from the room next door.

Wayne shot to his feet and rushed out. Not long after, Kevin walked into the room and stared at the equipment beside my bed.

At first, I thought Kevin was here to see me. For a moment, I was delighted to see him.

But Kevin simply said coldly, "There's only one specialized machine like this in the entire healing center. Lina's in critical condition, so we need to give it to her."

The healer froze for a moment before stepping forward to stop Kevin. "Without this machine, Leia will die."

Kevin simply disconnected the machine. "You healers always like to exaggerate the risks."

The moment he saw the disbelief in my eyes, his voice turned icy. "Leia, don't be a fool. Stop trying to compete with Lina. We owe her this much. Our family owes her a debt we can never repay."

My heart lurched. I couldn't believe what I had just heard.

Lina's parents had sacrificed their lives to save our parents. Ever since, our family had done everything we could to make it up to her.

Memories kept flooding back. When I was 12, I fought hard in the pack's competition and won the one and only wolf-emblem pendant.

I had wanted that prize all year. I held the pendant, refusing to let it go.

The moment Lina saw the pendant, her eyes were filled with tears. She lowered her head and muttered that she wished she had it too.

Seeing that, Kevin snatched the pendant from my hand and shoved it into Lina's hand. "Leia, be more considerate. Let Lina have it. We owe her family so much. It's just a pendant, okay?"

Tears filled my eyes as I refused to give up the pendant. I whispered, "I won that pendant fair and square."

Kevin scowled as he lectured me for being so narrow-minded and selfish.

Back then, if Lina had her eye on something, it would always end up being hers.

Mom used to make me special sachets filled with calming herbs, but if Lina said she liked them, I had to hand them over.

Every year, even at my own birthday, Lina would always get the first slice of cake.

Kevin had even promised to take me into the mountains to see the fireflies—just the two of us. As soon as Lina said she wanted to come along, the entire plan would revolve around what she wanted instead.

I was young back then. I kept telling myself that Lina's parents had sacrificed themselves to save mine, so I should always give in.

I thought all I had to do was give up the things I wanted. I never imagined that I would still have to give in even when my life was on the line.

The moment those words slipped out of her mouth, Lina realized she had just given herself away. She looked at Wayne and Kevin in shame and struggled to explain herself. "No… I… It's not what you think."Kevin snatched the bottle from Andrea and glanced at it. He then stared at Lina in disbelief. Wayne closed in on Lina until she was backed up against the wall, with nowhere left to go. "It's not what we think, huh? I never knew you could be so calculating! We spoiled you so much all these years. How could you hurt Leia?" Kevin glared at Lina. All the pain he had been holding in finally exploded. "So it was all a lie from the very beginning! What were you thinking when you saw Leia lying in that hospital bed, suffering in pain? You're so cruel!" Wayne clenched the pendant so tightly that his knuckles turned white. He was barely able to stand. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't have trusted you completely. If I'd only listened to Leia, she wouldn't have died. We ignored her suff

Kevin didn't even bother looking up at Lina as he replied icily, "No."Lina froze, then asked, "Then why didn't you come see me? You didn't even get me any presents… Don't you like me anymore?"Kevin carefully put the photo away and asked flatly, "What do you want? I'll get it for you later."Frustrated, Lina went to find Wayne instead. Wayne was alone in his room, running his finger over my broken Moon Goddess pendant. When he saw Lina approaching, all he felt was exhaustion and irritation. "How can I help you?"Her eyes were red, and she sounded hurt as she asked, "Didn't you agree to celebrate my birthday with me today? Can you spend the day with me?"Wayne lowered his gaze and said softly, "I'm not free today."Lina completely lost it, tears streaming down her cheeks as she confronted him angrily. "Why are you treating me like this?"Didn't you always spoil me? You always gave me whatever I wanted. Now that Leia's gone, you don't care about me anymore!" Wayne finally l

In the end, Kevin didn't say anything and simply nodded. Even though Lina had gotten what she wanted, their indifference still bothered her. She stood there, pressing her lips together. The next day, Kevin and Wayne started discussing my funeral. Kevin spoke first. "Let's give Leia the grandest funeral to make it up to her."Wayne added. "I'll try to convince the elders to approve it."Lina stood off to the side, stunned. It would be very hard for me to qualify for a grand funeral, since I had barely contributed to the pack, but Kevin and Wayne were willing to speak to the elders about it. Jealousy flashed in her eyes as she clenched her fists. I was already dead, but somehow, I was still standing in her way. Of all days, my funeral just had to fall on Lina's birthday. In the past, Kevin and Wayne would start planning her birthday party a week in advance. They would get her cake, flowers, and all sorts of presents, making sure she had everything she desired.Lina tugged

Wayne's chest heaved. All he could think about was me lying on the operating table. I would never be able to talk to him again. He had no patience left for Lina. He sounded exhausted as he said coldly, "Lina, you should go back to your room."In just a few hours, he and Kevin's attitudes toward her had changed drastically. For a moment, Lina didn't know what to say. In the past, everyone had always let her have her way, no matter what she wanted. No one had ever spoken to her like that before. Lina's parents always catered to her every whim when they were still alive, and Kevin and Wayne did the same too. Her eyes reddened, and tears spilled down her cheeks. She gripped the hem of her hospital gown tightly, trembling all over. She looked at them in disbelief and said, "I was just asking… I was just scared… Why did you have to shout at me?"Still, no one responded. The healers tried again and again to resuscitate me. They kept at it for an entire hour. Finally, Andrea pu

My consciousness drifted free of my body. I was nothing more than a soul now, standing off to the side as I silently stared at my blood-soaked self on the operating table. The heart monitor blared nonstop as the healers scrambled to save my life.My body lay motionless on the table, making me look like I was simply asleep. For the first time, I felt no pain. I had endured the agony for hours, and it all vanished the moment my vital signs disappeared. The healers emerged from the operating room, their hands covered in blood. Panic was written all over their faces. "The patient has no vital signs. She's in critical condition, so we suggest—"Kevin cut them off, his eyes bloodshot. "I don't care what the monitor says. You have to save her!"Wayne's face was drained of color, and his voice trembled. "Just tell me what you need, and I'll make the calls right away. Do whatever it takes to save Leia!"The healers saw how distraught Kevin and Wayne were. They gritted their teeth and

The next day, news of Lina's critical condition spread throughout the department. She had acute liver failure and desperately needed a transplant. The entire pack was tested to find a match, and soon, the results were in. I was the only one in the pack who was a perfect match for Lina. Kevin and Wayne sat beside my bed, speaking to me with a gentleness I hadn't heard in a while. "Leia, I know you're in a lot of pain. It's been really hard for you."Kevin reached out to brush his hand over my burning forehead, just like he did when I was a pup. "Lina can't hold on any longer. I need you to donate half your liver to save her life. Once the surgery is over, I'll take you to see fireflies up in the mountains. "I know you've been wanting to see them for years. I'll make all your wishes come true."Wayne leaned over as well and took my cold hand in his. "Just help us one last time. After the surgery, I'll turn down all my assignments and spend every day with you. I'll make up for e
