Chapter 21

Kayla's POV

I woke up with a stiff neck, wondering why, until I realized I was in the back seat of my dad's SUV. Sitting up to see our location, I knew we were no longer in our hometown. Mom was eating a small bag of BBQ chips with water, and Dad was drinking a soda. I reached back into the cooler to grab a bottle of water; I was thirsty. I wondered how long I had been asleep, as I had no idea where we were. I noticed the gas light was on, indicating we needed to stop at a gas station to fill up.

"Dad, where are we?" Looking in the rearview mirror, he chuckled at my sleepy eyes.

"We're in Virginia right now, just four hours away from home. We're stopping for gas up ahead, so if you need to use the bathroom, go while I pump gas." Four hours away from home? That meant he would need to stop for gas again. I had been asleep for hours; geez. When we finally stopped at a gas station, I could smell wolves; they worked here. I wondered if they would cause trouble, hoping they wouldn’t as we didn't have time for it. All I wanted was to reach our destination, finish our business, and head back home. I was anxious about shifting during our stay, especially considering that our pack doctor would be eighteen hours away and unable to help me in case of any emergencies.

"Don’t worry, humans. We will help you." I realized that it wasn't my lycan speaking, as she sounded friendlier than my lycan usually did. Lycans are usually more ruthless, so I decided to ask her name.

"Oh my goddess, are you my wolf? What's your name? Mine is Kayla. I am sorry if I sound overly excited; I have been talking to my lycan for a week now, starting to think you were sleeping forever," I heard her chuckle.

"My name is Aurora. I wasn’t going to sleep forever, silly. I wake up when it's almost time to shift. I come to the surface to talk, so we can get close. Sometimes we wake up when our mates are near, but he's not near yet. I have a feeling he is close."

"Come on, Aurora, if our mate is near, he will find us. Let's not make it too easy for him, as my lycan Queen once said." They started laughing, creating a party-like atmosphere in my head. I chuckled as I walked to the bathroom. My parents looked at me like I was crazy; I guessed they would ask what was funny. Maybe I saw something they missed, but I knew the questions would come once we got back into the car. I didn't sit on the toilet; I squatted, completed my business, washed my hands, and hurried out of the spooky, slightly smelly bathroom, which seemed to be cleaned only a few days a week. I couldn't wait to get back on the road. Finally, Dad finished putting gas in the SUV when a tall man approached him. I could tell he was a wolf from a pack, not a rogue. I was on edge as they talked; the windows were rolled up, but remembering my lycan and wolf ears, I let them hear.

Why are you in my town? Are you just passing by, are rogue? You don’t rogue, you smell of Aura; you're an alpha, aren't you?”

“Yes, I’m an alpha. We are the Black family. I'm Mercury Black's son. You probably haven't heard of us. We're on our way to see King Lucas; he has asked us to come.”

“Yes, I have heard of you, alright. You're the most powerful pack around. If King Lucas asked for you to come, then it must be very important. I will see to it that you're not harmed by anyone while you are leaving this town.” I heard my dad chuckle as he looked the guy in the eyes. I knew he felt threatened when the guy spoke to him. He responded in the most threatening alpha tone he had, which was quite scary.

“I tell you what, if anyone tries to harm my family, they will have hell to pay. We are not starting trouble. We stopped to get gas and use the bathroom. If there is a problem with that, then someone here has a huge problem. We are leaving now. Do not try to start a fight because we will finish it, as we always do.” The man backed up, bowing his head.

“Excuse me, Mr. Black, I wasn't threatening you. I meant no harm. Go and have safe travels.” I watched as he backed away slowly, looking over my dad's shoulder. I slowly turned to see what he was staring at: four wolves ready to attack. I was glad I had kept a gun out; the bullets were laced with silver and wolfbane, capable of killing a wolf instantly. I reached for the button to roll down the window. My mother saw what I was doing. These were not regular wolves; they were rogues in a pack, doing as they pleased. When they came charging out of the woods towards my dad, I screamed to alert him.

“DAD! LOOK OUT!!!” My dad shifted, so did my mom and the warriors. I aimed at a wolf running towards my mom and pulled the trigger, shooting it in the head. The wolf dropped instantly upon hitting the ground. As the fight ensued, I noticed the man watching me growling. He then looked up as if he saw something and hastily ran off for his life. The fight ended as quickly as it started. My parents shifted back, got dressed, and got back into the SUV. Dad drove off while the rest of the pack followed. We were furious. I knew something like this would happen. I don’t understand why we couldn't just stop, do what we needed to, and leave. Instead, some troublemakers tried to ambush us because they had heard of us and wanted to test us. Well, they got a taste of their own medicine. Dad and mom finally calmed down. Dad started yelling at me until mom told him to stop.

“She was trying to protect us, Isiah. She killed two that were coming after me; so just chill out.”

"I know that, Ava, but she needs to be more careful. Those bastards could have crashed into the car and gotten her. She hasn’t shifted yet, so she needs to be more careful."

"Hmm, Mom, Dad, my wolf talked to me today. Her name is Aurora, and she's pretty cool. She said I will be shifting at the castle." When I told them that Dad almost lost control of the car, then he got back control before we ended up on the side of the road upside down or on the side, geesh, what's going to happen next? I better not say that. I don't want anything to happen. I just want to get there in one piece.”

Chapter 48William's POVWe woke up a little later than we should have. I was exhausted from the all-night driving to catch up with Luna and the others, so I slept in when I knew I shouldn't. I knew it was a bad idea, but I couldn't help it. Me being a leader to these guys was a bad idea on the Moon Goddess's part, but she insisted on this. I felt like I was letting her down. When we left the hotel room, I didn't know how long Luna was ahead of us, but I knew her car was not there. "Shit, I knew I shouldn't have slept in." But I also remembered we shouldn't be so close while she is driving. She would spot us and wonder why we are following them. We hurried to the car, then sped away from the hotel. I had to get the GPS out so I could see how far the castle was that Anna was talking about, her brother being there. It made me wonder if this guy is the real Lycan King. I remembered an old tale of a Lycan King. He only wanted the Lycans around; he wanted everything else dead. He wanted to

Chapter 47Dark Witch Tree (Sorry, I couldn't think of a better name to give her, lol)I was sitting on my porch enjoying the night. The owls were feasting, and I heard the snakes crawling around. When that girl came to me wanting some off-the-wall potion to make the king think that his mate was her, I thought she was insane. I've made this before long ago that the woman died because she didn't put enough in his drink. He was an alpha that everyone wanted, and she did, too. She decided to come to me and ask for it. I made it strong for her, warned her of the karma that it might cause, but she didn't care; she wanted it. I told her I wanted her first child, and she agreed. But things happened; she didn't put enough. They were in bed together when the potion wore off; the alpha killed her right there. Now, this girl comes to me asking for the same thing. I told her that I wanted to live in the castle, and she agreed. However, I had a feeling she wasn't going to live either. That girl is

Chapter 46Barry's POVIt had been a few days since I saw my daughter Angie. She told me she had plans for this little bitch, but what plans were they? I needed to let her know what my plans were before she did something stupid. I mind-linked her, telling her to get to my house now; she would be living with me so I could keep an eye on her. She didn't need to be living in the castle right now. I knew she didn't like the idea. I was waiting on the porch for her when she arrived, and she didn't have anything with her."Where the hell is all your stuff, Angie? I told you to bring it with you.""Dad, if they saw me take my things from my room and move in with you, they would think something is going on, and I don't need that right now. You said you had a better plan than I had. So before I tell you mine, you need to tell me yours. Besides, mine is already in progress." I couldn't believe my ears. What the hell was she doing that was already in progress?"Girl, I hope it's nothing stupid t

Chapter 45This is how William became part of the assassins.William's POVAs I slept beside my mate Anna, I came to realize something profound: I was part of a very strong family. It took me a while to understand this, but I am an integral part of this family. I often wondered how I could help them. While I slept, the moon goddess came to me. I knew she never appeared unless there was something important to convey. I found myself standing in the woods, arms crossed over my chest, simply observing. I was pondering why I was there until I heard her voice. I turned to see her: she had white hair cascading down her back, white eyes, and a white dress with a tribal mark on her forehead."I know you're wondering why I summoned you here, William, but I am forming an assassin group to aid Mercury's family. I know you well, William. It will be tough, but Anna's sisters, Luna and Kayla, are in dire need of help. A significant war is imminent as they seek to dethrone the king, who refuses to st

Chapter 44 Kayla's POVI knew I shouldn't have smacked him, but I was pissed off right now. How dare she kiss what is mine? I stormed outside; I wanted to go for a run. I decided to use my wolf form. This time it really didn't hurt that much. Once I was done shifting, I ran into the woods. It was amazing how it felt looking through my wolf eyes. Everything seemed different. I could see so many colors and smell the animals before I ran up to them. I jumped over a few logs, marked some of the trees. I was having so much fun. I even let Aurora hunt down a rabbit or two; she enjoyed the run as well. I found a small lake right in the middle of the land. I looked down into the water and noticed how silver my wolf was. I think I needed to shift into my lycan. If anyone saw me like this, they would probably try to kill me. So I shifted right into my Lycan. She roared and then sat down on a log. Her fingers went into the water, scooping up some water to drink. I looked down into the water and

Chapter 43Angie's POVThroughout the night, I kept hearing howling, screaming, and even some growling. What the heck was going on? I got up and looked out the window; oh, it was a full moon, a night when first shifters did their first shift. Smirking, I hope the one that shifts gets tortured from the pain like I did. Trust me, I felt like I was dying when I did my first shift. I don't like to shift that much, but when I do, I let my lycan run as long as she wants; it makes her strong. I looked further and saw Lucas picking someone up off the ground. Motherfucker, it's that girl's first shift, and he's carrying her. I bet they're going to mate and mark each other. Walking out of my room, I watched as he carried her to her room. He went in and out of there several times, bringing up a cupcake, then food to her. The last time, it took a while for him to come out. I thought that's when they were going to do it, but I didn't hear anything; these walls were soundproof, but every now and t
