Amelia stared at Clarence as he took her in with an odd emotion flashing in his eyes. Something about it left her feeling breathless; it wasn’t like any emotion she had seen from him before. It was something deeper and more raw, and it caused her heart to give a tiny flip.

"It was my own stupidity." She responded slowly, "I slipped and fell into the deepest part of the hot spring, and there was a siren."

As Clarence listened to Amelia’s recounting of what happened, his frown continued to deepen. She couldn’t be sure, but something about it told her that he didn’t fully believe her.

"We told you that already." Victoria huffed, "Why do you need to hear it again? What you should be doing is begging for forgiveness for letting something like that happen to her."

"Vic…" Amelia began but stopped as Clarence shook his head.

"She’s right." He agreed, closing the distance between them. "This was due to my carelessness."
