Chapter 10

Author: Perfect Timing
The same teammates who used to hype Nicole up were now spewing insults, cussing her out.

[I can't believe this! The competition deadline is an hour away, and Nicole's program crashes with a bug. Not only that, it wiped out everything we built. She straight-up ruined all our work!]

[Damn it! We spent a whole month grinding on this, and now it's all gone. We told her to fix the bug herself, but she didn't know what the hell she was doing. She kept typing mistakes into the code until the whole thing was completely dead!]

[Man, I swear she must've been plagiarizing other people's work all along. That's why she doesn't even know the basics.]

[Any genius coder out there? Please help us! I'm about to lose my mind!]

The ranting on Instagram got louder by the second, and soon, random onlookers jumped into the mess.

[Did you all just find out? Word was out a while ago that she only got into Arkenville University because both her parents are professors. They paid her way in.

  • From Glitch to Glory   Chapter 12

Ivor reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a thin strip of parchment, covered in strange runes. He struck a match, letting the paper burn until it curled to ash. Then he scooped the ashes into a cup of water and stirred."Drink this," he said, his voice low but steady. "It's a cleansing potion. No spell, curse, or hex will cling to you once it's in your blood."The moment it slid down my throat, the necklace around my neck loosened with a sharp snap. I gasped and pulled it off easily.Ivor then mumbled something under his breath while holding the pendant, as if sealing its power. Then he smiled at me, saying, "Parasitic charms are my cat's favorite snack. Once it's gone, the one who bound it will feel the backlash."You're free now. Don't worry, and just go live your life."His black cat let out a lazy meow, as if saying, "Leave it to me."By the time Ivor finished, my grandmother and mother had already set the table. The five of us sat down and shared dinner as if nothin

The line stayed quiet. Seeing that Mark didn't answer, I hung up.I was still turning everything over in my head when my grandmother and father walked in with a guest. The man had a head full of white hair, carried an old-fashioned wooden pipe, and trailed a pitch-black cat behind him."This is my granddaughter, Kelsey," my grandmother said to the old man, all worried. "Check her out. See if there's something off on her.She then turned to me. "Kelsey, this is the man I told you about. You can call him Ivor."They welcomed him into the house. I couldn't help but feel that ever since the cat stepped inside, it locked its shiny eyes right on me and didn't blink once.I sat down, swallowed hard, and told Ivor everything that had been happening, including how my code kept getting copied, how my ideas were stolen, and how Nicole even seemed to know random thoughts in my head. But I left out the part about being reborn.Ivor said, his smile slipping into something serious, "So, you

After telling Jesse not to use my idea, I stretched out on the rocking chair in my grandmother's yard, trying to think of a way forward. The country sky was ridiculously clear, with stars scattered everywhere, like tiny lamps showing lost people which way to go.That was when my grandmother walked over, holding half a watermelon, and handed it to me."What's on your mind? You look so deep in thought."Looking at her kind smile, I hesitated. "Grandma…"She touched the tip of my nose and shook her head with a knowing grin. "You can't hide anything from me. Just tell me: What's really going on lately?"My voice dropped low, thick with a lump in my throat. "Grandma, I don't know why, but all my work somehow gets stolen. And worse, the person who takes it always turns it around and makes me look guilty. No matter what I think about, she ends up thinking the exact same thing. It's as if…""As if she already knew your thoughts ahead of time?" My grandmother finished for me.I nodded h

I had my head buried in code until the sun dipped low. That was when my grandmother walked in carrying a steaming bowl of beef stew, smiling right at me."Kelsey, no matter how busy you are, you still gotta eat. I made this stew special for you. Try it."I closed my laptop, stretched with a huge grin, and said, "Thanks, Grandma. It smells delicious."Since I was a kid, I'd been obsessed with her beef stew. Spicy in just the right way, packed with herbs, and slow-cooked in a rich bone broth—it was out of this world. But once I went off to college, chances to eat it became rare.I reached for a piece with my hand, ready to dig in, when my grandmother smacked my wrist lightly and handed me a towel."Wash your hands first before eating!"I laughed and went to wash my hands. That was when my phone screen lit up.I picked it up and froze. Instagram was blowing up again.Right after my call with Jesse earlier, Nicole had posted her own code. And of course, it looked exactly like mine,

The next morning, it took us nine hours on the train and another two on a bus before we finally got to my grandmother's house. She stood at the entrance of the little town waiting for us, holding onto a huge black dog."Kelsey, you finally came back to see me. You've lost so much weight!""Grandma, I missed you so much!"I threw myself into her arms, breathing in the warm, sunny smell of her clothes, and my throat caught. My grandmother thought I was scared of the big dog, so she snapped at it right away. "Rocky, hush! Don't you go scaring Kelsey like that!"I laughed through my tears, wiped my face, and reached down to pat Rocky's head. "It's okay, Grandma. I'm just too happy to see you and Rocky again."But my touch didn't calm the dog at all. Rocky, usually the most obedient dog ever, barked at me nonstop. It even jumped up, pawing at my hand as if it were desperate to tell me something. My grandmother's smile faded. She narrowed her eyes and asked me in a serious voice, "Sw
