‘You’ve lost, Ashley,’ Lilian's taunting words haunted me as I sat in the bathtub, drowning in tears and the stinging cold water that filled the bathtub.
After ‘shamelessly demanding for divorce’ like the media tagged it, I rushed out of the hall and locked myself up in my room all day.
I had neither eaten, washed up, nor stripped out of the dress I was wearing last night.
I barely slept either, and the only thing that I had done was cry, even though that was not going to stop the smear I was receiving from the internet. I had been called all kinds of names in comment sections and news outlets.
And Alex? He has never shown up since last night. I guessed he was celebrating with his mistress on their successful accomplishment.
I was burning up and dying in sorrow. If anyone would betray me, I never thought it could be Lilian. We had been friends for so long, yet she chose to hate me this way.
I lost my career, my family, my dignity for the sake of Alex and Lilian, but this was what I got in return…betrayal.
No amount of crying could redeem my name or save me. It was over. I had to accept it.
I stopped crying and stood up, then stepped out of the bathtub.
The drenched dress I had on was so heavy that I could barely stand, but I didn't mind. There was nothing to care about anyway. I raised my heavy, reluctant feet and limped out of the bathroom. I walked gingerly to the door and pulled it open, squinting my eyes as sharp lights from the windows in the corridor pierced into my eyes.
I looked down at my feet and found a file on the ground.
I didn't need a seer to tell what was in the file before picking it up.
I closed the door, then limped to the drawer and took out a pen. I took out the document containing the divorce and input my signature in the spaces needed.
I cancelled the alimony and carefully put the document back into the file and dropped it on the bed.
I took a deep breath to ease the pain weighing my chest down, then picked up my phone and dialed my father's number.
His voice came out rough and hostile when he accepted the call.
“Father?" I called in a shaking voice.
He paused, then scoffed when he recognized my voice.
“Are you looking for a place to run to after ruining your reputation and dragging our name through dirt?" He spat, and pain coursed through my body.
“Please, can I come home?" I pleaded, and silence sneaked in. I prayed within me that he would give me another chance, but his next response shattered me beyond recovery.
"Home? You don't have a home here. The moment you married that poor scum, your home stopped existing!" He spat, and the line went dead.
The phone dropped from my hand, and I gripped the edge of the drawer as pain and sorrow dealt with me.
After crying for long minutes, I stared at my ghostly face in the mirror and chuckled in agony.
Everything I had worked for was gone. Everyone I loved had deserted me. I had no one else aside from myself.
I walked into the closet and changed my dress, then packed my bag to leave.
As I dragged my suitcase to the door, it burst open, and Alex trudged in with his hand wrapped around Lilian.
They paused at the door and stared at me, smirking in satisfaction.
“I cancelled the alimony, you can have it all," I muttered, and he scoffed.
"No one will agree to help you out, you'd better take the money and leave,” Lilian chipped and I looked up at her.
“I am not a cheap beggar like you," I sneered at her.
Alex growled in anger and rushed towards me to hit me, but Lilian drew him back.
“There is no need, honey, we shouldn't stop the joy we're feeling right now," she said as she rubbed her belly.
My eyes darted to the stiletto on her feet, and I chuckled.
“You did a great job in hiding it perfectly, you're an actress anyway,” I muttered, and she grinned.
“Right? It's so sad you're so dumb you couldn't even suspect me, even after seeing the heels," she replied and puked my head.
I turned and faced Alex, a deep frown on my face.
“Alex Montgomery, I was the reason behind your success. Now I will be the reason for your downfall," I blurted out a promise.
He exchanged glances with Lilian and burst into laughter.
“Oh my God, I'm so scared!" He mocked.
"You don't even have a cent on you! You're so delusional!" Lilian laughed hysterically.
I joined in their laughter, and they stopped, staring at me like I was crazy.
“I hope you survive it," I muttered and continued my walk to the door. I paused and craned my neck back, “You two deserve each other. I wish you the best in your marriage."
And with that, I walked away from a house I once called home, with no hope of survival.
I dragged my suitcase behind me while limping down the street of the estate. The glares and whispers kept coming whenever someone walked past me. Some even stopped to take a picture of me, but I cared less.
“I will survive, I swear I will survive it all," I kept whispering to myself as I walked with no idea of where I was headed.
“Ashley?" Someone sounded a horn that blared behind me.
I stopped and turned around, sighing loudly.
I looked at the man before me with eyes that had no life in them.
“If you're here to ask me any questions…”
“I'm here to take you to my master," the man interrupted, and my brows shot up.
I scoffed loudly, twitching my lips in disgust.
“Your master?" I asked.
"Yes…” The man paused and narrowed his eyes over me.
“Your father wants you back, Miss Ashley Carter.”
ASHLEY My chest tightened when the voice of my father's son filled the garden. I stood frozen, staring at the entrance of the garden while murmurs and shrieks surrounded me. My fist clenched as he staggered into the garden, a grin on his face. He staggered fully in, his eyes narrowing and his feet trembling. He looked like a tout in those stupid, colorful clothes, and his hair was a mess, a spiky mess. I clenched my jaw, glaring hatefully at him as he staggered deeper into the garden, his grin widening when his eyes shifted in my direction. “Hello everyone! Inam back!” He growled and my face heated in embarrassment. “Is that your brother?” Lauren whispered, mockery evident in her voice. I sighed out, closing my eyes as anger roared through me. Margaret walked briskly towards her son and gripped his arm, whispering words to him. The grin on his face faded and he looked at me. Our eyes locked and I could swear I saw hatred dash across those eyes. I wasn't surprised. That was al
ASHLEY I didn't know what to do as I stood there, dumbstruck and confused. My heart was racing in my chest, my belly was twisted in horror and I felt a sinking, weakening feeling enveloping every part of me. I gulped hard, my throat still dry and tight as I stared at the necklace. She was the one who had bought the second one. How was that possible? Why didn't I know all this while? I gasped and began to draw closer, slower this time. Before I could get closer to where she stood so I could question her, someone grabbed my hand from behind and dragged me out of the place. My heart dropped into the bottom of my belly and rage sparked through me as I struggled to get the hands of whoever was holding me off my wrist. From the corner of my eyes as I struggled, I saw Margaret turn in the direction of the place I once stood. “Let go of me!" I spat and jerked my hand away from his grip. The person turned and it turned out to be Skylar. I scoffed, disappointed that it wasn't Michae
ASHLEYMichael let go of my hand when his friends came over to greet him. We were back at the funeral party being hosted in my father's garden. That was his favorite part of the garden. It irritated me that that was the part Margaret decided to throw her stupid party. I knew behind those black dresses and small talk, there was happiness and excitement. All I'd heard since I was standing here was the possibility of the inheritance becoming Margaret's and her children's.Everyone at the party had pretended like Michael and I didn't exist. Even though Michael wasn't interested in things like that, he was obviously pissed to see the direction of every conversation we decided to be part of.I sighed and rubbed my wrist, glancing at the flowers my father was watering the day I came to see him. The last day I saw him alive and smiling.“Miss Carter." I turned when someone mentioned my name behind me.The smile that I was about to throw onto my face disappeared when my eyes fell on Mrs. Morg
ASHLEYI watched silently with a heavy heart as they lowered the gold coffin into the ground. Margaret wailed loudly beside me, and Karen followed along with their false cries.I pinned my blurry gaze on the casket, barely batting an eyelid over the people who gathered to console their fake cries. If I should bat an eyelid, tears would definitely slip out of my eyes and expose the weakest part of me.I sighed and closed my eyes, feeling that pain-filled sting in my chest.“To ashes we come, to ashes we return," the priest said, and the people chorused a quivering Amen.I sucked in a deep breath, gripping the hem of my black dress as they began to lay him down in a place I would never see him again. My throat burned in pain and rage, and my heart ached so badly that I feared it would burst out in flames. I shouldn't have stared, but I did anyway. I wanted to watch as they buried him. I wanted to feel that pain, that rage. I wanted to taste that unquenchable thirst of vengeance.I stood
ASHLEY My heart dropped into the deepest part of my belly and shivers washed down my back. I staggered back, the hairs on my skin jerking up in horror.“Kourtney?" I whispered in a quivering voice.I looked at Michael, but he looked away, unable to explain either.I gasped loudly and gripped the hem of my dress.Margaret gripped my arm and pushed me back, glaring hatefully at me.“You made him start digging around for things he shouldn't have dug for," she whispered and my throat knotted. My lips parted and slammed shut, confusion welling up in me.“What do you mean?" I snapped when I couldn't take in the confusion anymore. She wanted to say something else to me but paused and looked back at the people staring at us.She turned and glared at me then hissed and turned around to go back to where she was sitting.I stood there, dazed, as I stared at them. How did my father find out about Kourtney? Why did that name kill him?My heart clenched, and guilt filled my chest with bile rising
ASHLEYAll through the drive to the morgue, I couldn't stop crying. My heart kept shrinking, and tears wet my dress so much that I had to wrap a handkerchief over my chest.“Don't get into a fight," Michael warned as he pulled the car to a stop in the parking lot.I wiped away the tears on my face and nodded as I unlocked the seat belt.I got out of the car and rubbed my trembling arm, then began to walk towards the building.I could barely see the building because of the blurry haze over it. My heart was racing, and my feet ached with each step I forced forward towards the building. The closer I got to that building, the more painful those rare moments I shared with him got.I could barely feel myself, and I could barely hear my own heartbeat as I walked.I paused at the large doors, my heart racing so fast and thumping so hard that I feared my chest might split.I couldnt move again. I wasnt ready to face whatever horror was waiting for me behind those walls.“What's wrong?” I heard
ASHLEY My mouth widened and so did my eyes as embarrassment and shock fought for a space on my face.Father? The man I cursed at in the elevator was Jasper's father?!I couldn't breathe for the minutes I stared at his face and when I finally caught my breath and senses back, I wheezed and coughed
ASHLEYThe beeping sound from the coffee maker dragged me back to reality. I turned off the machine, picked up the cup beside the coffee maker, and poured the coffee into the cup.I walked towards the couch and sat down, swinging the cup of coffee as my encounter with his daughter replayed countle
ASHLEY “What are you doing?” I gasped, intending to lean back but I ended up almost falling out of the chair. His lips twitched up in mischief and he narrowed his eyes over my exposed legs with so much lust in his eyes.“What the hell are you doing?" I managed to squeeze breathy words out of my tr
ASHLEY My heart clenched when he said those words, but slowly my lips slanted into a smile, and my shoulders stiffened so hard that I felt pain hit me there. I composed before spinning around to face him. The man's eyes were still on him, pleading silently that I don't bring out that phone to ca
