Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Goldie Lane
Emma's expression darkened. "All this over a ring?"

She glanced down at the ring box in her hand. After letting out a scornful snort, she tossed it carelessly back onto the bed.

I said nothing.

Emma drew a deep breath, her tone laced with impatience. "All these years, I've given you a villa to live in and bought you the best cars. Name one thing you wanted that I didn't give you."

She looked down at me from above, all the tenderness in her eyes completely drained away.

"And now you're giving me attitude over a ring?"

I lifted my head to look at her, my eyes red-rimmed. "Emma, is it really so hard to love just one person?"

She furrowed her brows irritably. "What did I do? Is cheating against the law? Which law says cheating is illegal? Vince, stop being so dramatic, alright?"

The word "dramatic" hit me across the face like a slap. I couldn't stop my whole body from trembling.

And yet, I was still hesitating and wondering if she might try to keep me from leaving.

Emma had clearly decided she wasn't going to waste any more time. She turned around and picked up the shirt draped over the back of the chair. Then, she put it on and buttoned it up one at a time.

"Vince, let's be clear about one thing—you're the one who can't live without me. If you try to use a breakup to manipulate me again, don't blame me when I'm not so nice about it."

Without so much as a glance at me, she slammed the door and left.

As I watched her leave, I remembered how she had appeared out of nowhere that year.

At the time, Mom was drunk, and a single phone call from Scott's father, Malcolm Barlow, had provoked her into a blind rage. She grabbed a wine bottle and hurled it at me and my father, Russell Cline.

Dad had yet to recover from a serious illness and could barely even walk. We huddled in a corner of the house, with nowhere to run.

The neighbors had long since grown accustomed to this kind of scene. The only person who could protect us was my sister, Bernadette Cline. But she was still studying abroad at the time.

Dad shielded me in his arms, taking several blows to his back until blood poured from his mouth.

I was dragged out by Mom and kicked viciously several times.

Just when I thought we would die there, Emma burst in with her bodyguards. She pinned Mom to the ground and stood firmly in front of me.

"Vince, don't be afraid. I'm here now."

Later, she helped Dad find the best lawyer to fight the divorce case.

On the day we won, she took my hand in front of Dad and made a promise to him. "Mr. Cline, you can rest assured leaving Vince with me. I will never betray him, and I'll be good to him for the rest of my life."

I finally couldn't hold back the tears, and they fell in streams onto the back of my hand.

I took a shower and changed into some clean clothes, getting ready to go to the nursing home to visit Dad.

The hallway of the nursing home was very quiet.

I pushed open the door to the room. Dad was leaning against the headboard.

Bernadette happened to be there too, keeping Dad company and chatting with him.

"Vince, you're here." Dad smiled and waved me over. "Come quick. It's rare to have both of you here at the same time."

I stood in the doorway, and my eyes reddened instantly.

Dad's smile faltered for a moment. He looked at me carefully and asked, "What's wrong? Why are your eyes so red?"

Despite myself, a sob escaped me.

"Dad, I'm going to break up with Emma."

The room fell silent.

Dad was too dumbfounded to speak, but Bernadette got angry. She grabbed my sleeve and pulled me toward the door.

"What nonsense are you saying?"

There were a few seconds of silence on the other end of the line before the call was disconnected. When Emma arrived at Scott's place with her men, he was sitting on the couch crying.Emma stood there, reeking of alcohol. She had lost so much weight that her dress hung loosely on her.Scott walked up to her and reached out to touch her face."Emma, why have you been drinking so much again?"Emma turned her head away, dodging his hand.Scott's hand froze midair before he withdrew it. He lowered his head, tears falling."Emma, I know you're in pain because Vince is gone. But you still have me. I'll stay with you. No matter what happens, I'll be by your side."Scott placed his hand on Emma's slightly swollen belly. "Besides, you're carrying my child. You can't go on like this. Vince couldn't even get you pregnant, and yet he wouldn't even let you—"Before he could finish, Emma's palm cracked across his face.Scott stumbled two steps sideways and had to grab the couch to steady h

Bernadette honored my dying wish. She didn't pick some scenic plot or hire anyone to find a special spot. Instead, she chose an ordinary grave site.Dad's headstone and mine were placed right next to each other. The day of the burial, there was a drizzle.Bernadette stood beside the grave pit in a black dress.Raindrops landed on her hair and her lashes. She blinked, and a single drop slipped down her cheek. Whether it was rain or a tear, no one could say.Emma was there too. Her eyes were red and swollen, threaded with bloodshot veins. Her face was bare, devoid of makeup. She hadn't slept in days.Every night, she sat in the bedroom where I used to stay, on the side of the bed where I used to sleep. The pillow still held the scent of my shampoo, though it was so faint that it was almost undetectable. She lived in dread that one day, even that would be gone for good.As the coffin was being lowered halfway down, Emma rushed forward and threw herself onto it, gripping its edge w

Emma stood frozen to the spot as if nailed there. A violent wave of nausea churned up from her stomach. She turned her head away and retched several times.Bernadette lunged forward and grabbed the doctor by his white coat."That's impossible! You're lying! My dad was perfectly fine just yesterday!"The doctor stumbled from being yanked. He let out a sigh and said, "Ma'am, I'm sorry for your loss."Bernadette's face was filled with panic. "Impossible! I don't believe it!"Her eyes reddened, and before she knew it, tears were streaming down her face.Bernadette wanted to go find Dad. But at that very moment, the doors to the operating room opened.A doctor walked out, dark bruises of exhaustion beneath his eyes."Family of Vince Cline, please come forward."Bernadette and Emma both shot to their feet at the same moment and stumbled toward the doctor. The doctor weighed his words carefully. "The patient suffered a ruptured spleen with massive internal abdominal bleeding. We per

Bernadette bent down and grabbed Emma by the arm, yanking her up from the floor.Emma stumbled from the force, her back slamming against the wall."Emma, I entrusted Vince to you, and this is how you took care of him?" Bernadette slapped Emma hard across the face. "You drove him to jump off a building! Are you even human? Just how much suffering did you put him through that he no longer wanted to live?"Emma's head whipped to the side. The corner of her lip split open, and blood seeped through. But instead of fighting back, she just let Bernadette vent.Bernadette slapped her again and again, without the slightest mercy. She didn't stop until a shout rang out."What are you doing? Stop hitting her!""Get lost!" Bernadette snarled coldly.Scott's eyes reddened.A nurse poked her head out of the operating room. With a frown, she hissed in a lowered voice, "There's a patient being resuscitated in here. If you want to fight, take it outside!"Both women fell silent at once.Berna

Bernadette instinctively reached out to catch me. But she was too far away. In fact, she couldn't even take a single step forward in time.A dull thud was followed by the sickening crunch of bone shattering. Blood gushed from the back of my head and spread across the tiles.Bernadette froze, the cigarette slipping from her fingers. It hit the floor and rolled through a smear of blood, which put it out.Her eyes widened, pupils dilating."Vince!"For the first time, Bernadette—who had always been so effortlessly composed—was thrown into complete, incoherent panic. She reached out to touch me, but her hand was shaking uncontrollably. "Vince, don't be afraid. I'm here."Tears fell to the ground, mixing with the blood until the two were indistinguishable.Emma came rushing out like a madwoman. She dropped to her knees beside me, her entire body trembling. Her eyes were bloodshot and brimming with tears."Vince, how could you be so foolish? Someone, help! Doctor! Where are the doct

Dad stood at the doorway, gasping for breath. His forehead was drenched in sweat."Vince, I was worried you and Bernadette might fight, so I came to check on you."Dad hobbled inside. When he caught sight of Emma standing beside the coffee table, he breathed a sigh of relief."Emma, you're here too. Perfect. You young people should talk things through properly. Don't keep quarreling over little things."Emma smiled and said, "Don't worry, Mr. Cline. We're not fighting."Just then, Dad spotted Scott standing behind Emma.I took hold of Dad's hand. "Dad, let me take you back to the nursing home."Dad pushed my hand away, his eyes suspicious. "Emma, who is this young man?"Scott smiled and walked up to Dad, looking him up and down. "Mr. Cline, your memory must be failing you in your old age. You and my father go way back—how can you not recognize me?"Dad's face turned deathly pale in an instant. "It's you! What are you doing here?"Scott pulled out a pregnancy test report and w
