Chapter 4

The comments went wild before my eyes.

[Alarm! Alarm!]

[Your mom is going to the ministry of education tomorrow afternoon and making use of her contacts to check on your college application records!]

[Run, quick! Leave tonight!]

[Any later, and you’ll be out of time! You’ll be doomed if she catches you!]

I sat up on the bed.

Without any hesitation, I packed two sets of clothes in the bag with my identification document, bank card and letter of acceptance.

I tiptoed across the living room to the door and opened it, sneaking out into the night without looking back.

Gritting my teeth, I raced to the train station.

I bought a ticket for the earliest train to Northland.

As I sat on the hard plastic chair, listening to the wheels running along the track, I watched the night sky zoom past me outside the window. The burden on my shoulders finally lifted.

Over the entire 12-hour journey, I didn’t dare shut my eyes for even a minute.

When I arrived at Northland, the sun was high up in the sky.

The first thing I did after walking out of the station was to find a service store. I used my identification document to apply for a brand-new SIM card.

I removed my old phone card and broke it in half without any hesitation, then flung it in a trash can by the road side.

From this moment on, I would have nothing more to do with that family.

That afternoon, I found a coffee shop where I could work part-time and have my food and lodging covered. The monthly salary was 2,000 dollars.

My boss was pleased with my efficiency at work and allocated me a room in the worker’s dormitory.

That night after work, I sat on the single bed in the dormitory, searching for information using the second-handed phone I bought with 500 dollars.

I dug up all the information I could find about student loans, financial aids for needy students, and scholarships available in Northland.

Listing all of my expenses in my notebook, I did my calculations. I was able to raise enough money for one year of tuition fees and daily expenses without taking a single cent from my family and simply relying on loans and my part-time job.

The comments had been keeping me company over these few days. They were filled with praise and empathy for me.

[She’s so amazing. I’m on my knees over her drive!]

[I’m in tears watching her! What an independent and clear-headed girl.]

[Sandra, go look for freshmen communities online.]

[Oh yeah, get yourself in these communities and ask your seniors what you need to report for the first day of school and be prepared early!]

The comments warmed my heart.

I successfully joined an online community for freshmen based on their suggestions.

In the afternoon of my second day at Northland, I was at the bar counter preparing coffee. A wave of comments suddenly came crashing before me.

[Damn, your mom realized that something is wrong!]

[She couldn’t find you this morning and couldn’t contact you at your number, either. She’s furious!]

I arched my brow, not at all surprised. I felt thankful that I managed to hide it from her until now.

The font size of the comments before me started growing.

[Incoming alert! Your mom is charging straight to your school to look for your homeroom teacher!]

[She’s forcing your homeroom teacher to pull out your college application records!]

[She saw that you applied for Northland instead of applying for a teacher’s college and is extremely upset. She even smashed a glass in the staff room!]

I sneered and handed the customer her drink.

“Have a nice day!”

I turned around and saw a comment in bolded red font occupying my vision.

[Whoa! Watch out, Sandra!]

[Your mom managed to dig up records of your ticket purchase!]

[She’s getting a train ticket to Northland for herself. She’s determined to drag you back home and make you retake the exams!]
